I always go here when I have guests and they all love it. It is mostly for tourists but it is really nicely decorated, like you are back in the twenties in Shanghai. The tea is quite expensive but it is a very good place to sit quietly and overlook the old street, which is also worth some money. I... More

We had about an hour to kill before meeting up with some friends so we looked up a spot near us using TripAdvisor. A drink and somewhere to relax was what we were looking for. Beware that it slightly hard to find as it is located on the second floor above some shopping stalls. Positive things are: Historical Artifacts Great... More

Yu Yuan Garden, old town area, and Fangbang street were all crowded with tourists and people trying to sell knockoff watches. This hidden little teahouse was a great escape. The quality of the tea and dumplings was good but not excellent. You come here for the atmosphere and the mini museum of old Shanghai.

It is true, you get sent back in time of Chinese culture. A tiny small wooden staircase leads you up to low roofed wooden interior with tiny wooden table and chairs everywhere. The waiter we had was very unfriendly and recommended the most expensive tea on the menu without even asking about what we liked. We do not know much... More

We've visited the Teahouse on a rainy September evening and it was magical. We were the only guests. A travel back through time to a different and nostalgic Shanghai during 30's. Quiet music and the design from the epoch, view over the rainy Shanghai Old Street and amazing tea ceremony. Polite service, great tastes and atmosphere made us stay there... More

This so incredible, just as if time stopped in Shanghai in the 30's. Teas are awesome, you have a lot of choice. And waiters do a tea ceremony, which is quite impressive. For food, you don't have lots of choice but I really recommend you dumplings, they are EXCELLENT! If you visit the old town you really have to eat... More

After reading good reviews on this teahouse, I decided to check it out after a turn in the Yu Gardens. It was before mid-morning and I was the only customer. I was greeted warmly by the owner, whose name was Xu. Xu recommended that I try the tea ceremony which was pricey by Chinese standards, but worth it for the... More

We had been to the Yu Garden and were just wandering the streets for a while, then we started to focus on finding something to eat. We weren't even sure quite where we were, but we figured we would find something, eventually. We spotted the entrance and ventured up the narrow flight of stairs, not sure what to expect. Inside... I am delighted I found this quaint tea house. It's like stepping back in time and the two elderly men provided an authentic tea making ceremony. We had tea and dumplings and it was well worth taking the time to find this place. Completely different experience.

We were in shanghai last year in August and were approached by 4 young people at a pedestrian crossing near the old city and asked if we would like to go a tea tasting with them. Foolishly we thought they were being friendly and went along to some old houses nearby where we tasted several teas , most interesting. It... More

Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Shanghai’s original walls live on in the curve of the streets that serve as the border to the old city. An aerial view shows a clear circular outline and parts of the original wall are preserved as monuments to the ancient past. The main tourist attraction of Yuyuan (which means Yu garden, though it is often redundantly referred to as Yuyuan Garden) draws hordes of tourists every day, but wandering the streets around the complex reveals more exciting attractions such as food and antique markets. There are also streets lined with shops peddling everyday wares such as Chinese dining ware and craft notions that can be even more enticing to visitors uninterested in the usual tourist fare.
