This was one of many large family meals we had while visiting Shanghai. The building is beautiful and historic, ask any Shanghainese and they will know it in an instant. Service in the private rooms was very good, no complaints even though we stayed for four hours and well after closing time. The food was very classic Shanghainese, though sweeter... More

We went here not for the history but the food. The food was delicious and the service was ok. If you are expecting the complete ambiance, service and food, then forget it but if you want great food, then come and taste the duck and the ribs as they are phenomenal.

It is quite popular with local tourist (from outside Shanghai) due to it's fame and location. But food was poor and pricey. A standard Shanghai cuisine restaurant chain would have done much better. Not recommended.

I came to this restaurant after last visit 10 years ago. It was very close to Yu Garden. The food was still good. The portion was big. The price was reasonable. But, just don't expect any good service. Eight-Treasure Duck and Fried shrimp was good. Must try.

Food here was good with some typical Shanghai food. Services were either not exist or average at the best. Seating was okay, but this is not a place you expect romantic ambiance.

This restaurant was not my first choice while looking for a restaurant for dinner at Yu Garden area, but it was open at 8 pm on a Wednesday while the other 2 choices on my list were already closed. There are several issues with the restaurants: 1. We ordered 3 items: crab and ginko, Chinese greens with tofu and dried... More

I did not look vet this restaurant, although I must say the duck we ordered was good, but not excellent. Just felt like it was not as pristine as I would have preferred and this made me uncomfortable. the staff tried very hard to please us with nice service, but for me this was not a place I would return... Based on one visit it's a very reasonabe place, where one can try some local specialities. The spikey sea cucumber we got was exceptional in taste, so was the turtle in a dark sauce with fresh dates. The ambiance is not so appealing but looks like typical for more formal dining in China. Nice menu with pictures and reasonable translations... More

Lao Fan Dian (Old Hotel) restaurant is one of the oldest restaurants in Shanghai . They say that it has moved twice since 1875 year but it's fans followed it . The restaurant's interior is very simple and classic. It's a place to get together and eat. There are several cabinets for private dining by big companies. So it is... More

While in Shanghai in September, I had two dinners at Shanghai Classical Hotel a restaurant that claims to have introduced Shanghai cuisine. One meal with a party of four was a super experience. I was the only non-Chinese in the group. Food was excellent and everyone on the staff was charming. Based on that one experience this would be a... More

Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Shanghai’s original walls live on in the curve of the streets that serve as the border to the old city. An aerial view shows a clear circular outline and parts of the original wall are preserved as monuments to the ancient past. The main tourist attraction of Yuyuan (which means Yu garden, though it is often redundantly referred to as Yuyuan Garden) draws hordes of tourists every day, but wandering the streets around the complex reveals more exciting attractions such as food and antique markets. There are also streets lined with shops peddling everyday wares such as Chinese dining ware and craft notions that can be even more enticing to visitors uninterested in the usual tourist fare.
