It's a hidden place in downtown, even a little bit sketchy. But the food is good and there are plenty of options. They also have a good green juice. I had my meal and the juice for 28 reais. Found interesting that there's a great variety even though the buffet is small, eg. veggie fish made of cará

The high proportion of Brasilians really love their meat, so there is not a massive flowering of veggie and vegan places. A lot of waiters don't really understand the term and consider animal fat or even chicken acceptable 'vegetarian' ingredients as they are not red meat! Mostly people will point you to the por kilo restaurants where you can help... More

What delicious vegetarian options here. My wife is coeliac so she had to choose carefully her dishes from the buffet. But there seemed to be plenty of options for gluten free although there are no labels. This place is hard to find so watch out for a small entrance with a number 24 on the top and stairs leading up.

My wife and I are vegetarians and after 3 days in Rio, we were getting tired of our limited food options. Luckily, I read a review for Tempeh from a fodors trip review and decided to go there when we toured Praca XV. So at noon, we headed to find Tempeh. It is important to note that it is located... We went to this place around 1 pm for a price-by-weight lunch. They didn't offer an unlimited buffet option during my visit. We had a filling amount of vegan food for about $13 each. Best options were the faux meatballs and moqueca! Kinda silly that the soup cost extra; I wouldn't get that again (a corn chowder-type soup). The guy... More

Great and cheap vegan food in the center of Rio de Janeiro. A veggie oasis in the heart of "meat-land". It works as the brazilian "kilo" system: you put all you want to eat in your plate and pay the weight of it, despite what is on it. They also have great natural juices. Highly recomended.

Wonderful place!!!!!!! Great location - downtown, among great historical architecture, near Paço Imperial, Praça XV de Novembro, within walking distance from subway station Carioca. At the entrance you'll see only a sign above a simple door that leads to a high staircase which gives access to the restaurant on the superior floor. Nice staff and comfortable ambiance - friendly people... More

Brazil is not a country awash with vegetarian restaurants. Vegetarians can be too easily condemned to a bland diet of cheese omelettes and tasteless veg. But Tempeh is a restaurant apart. An unassuming entrance in the city centre leads to a first floor haven of food cooked with care that is totally meat and fish -free. Hot and cold selections... More

Nice restaurant focused on vegetarian cousine. Very good food, even for those not used to that like us.

Neighbourhood Profile
Downtown Rio is the place where this city was born. With modern skyscrapers sharing space with historical buildings and landmarks, this neighbourhood is living proof that the old and the new can live together harmoniously. As you would expect, downtown is where all major companies house their offices. However, the region isn’t restricted to businesses. Gems such like the “Paço Imperial,” which is a cultural centre that used to serve as a residence for governors of Brazil, can be found here. Pedra do Sal, a Monday night street party, is also in this neighbourhood. This landmark is the birthplace of samba and is famous for its “roda de sambas” (“dance circles”). Stop in for one and get closer to discovering where Brazilian happiness comes from.
