the food was very good, mostly the main courses and deserts, amazing. they were very nice to offer a cake with a sparkling firework for my wife’s birthday. what they need to pay attention to is at the details: they did not have wi-fi working...and for a foreigner that was an inconvenience. the bathrooms are not looking 5 stars. wine paring should come with a glass of wine for each dish, but it did not - wasn’t such an inconvenience but the price is high for the amount of wine servedMore

A visit to Rio is likely to lift anyone’s spirits given the superlative setting the city enjoys. So if you love food and wine it seems logical to go to a restaurant that is similarly uplifting. Oro fits the bill perfectly. Everything is superb -...food and wine utterly delicious (how refreshing to have a wine pairing with glasses topped up), service attentive, courteous and friendly. Also nice to have a taxi sorted for you when it’s time to go home. All in all a superlative evening of world class wining and dining.More

Restaurant bit shabby, shows wear and tear, needs refresh. Food delivery assembly line. Cost for two w/o white pairing $362 (incl. tax, 15% gratuity added, 3 glasses wine). Would not recommend.

This restaurant should be so much higher up the list on Tripadvisor, alas here it is languishing down for reasons which escape me. I lived in Rio for around 8 months and made a point of eating in all the Michelin Star restaurants (Lasai, Cipriani,...Mee & Oteque) my favourite, by a long way is ORO. The whole experience is just right. It is a very cool, smallish dining room and all the severs I have interacted with always spoke excellent English. I've always done the tasting menu with them and always been blown away, the same can't be said of some Michelin Star restaurants I have tried in Europe. The small snacking dishes to begin are a joy, and the wine pairing is the only wine pairing in any Michelin Star restaurant which you get to enjoy decent measures, in fact they top up your wine should you require. I was asked which of the snacks I really enjoyed then the waitress brought me a couple more of my favourites, what a terrific gesture - plenty wine and plenty snacks. Moving onto the main tasting dishes, I've always found them flavoured very well, presented beautifully and really quite inventive too. Desserts are delicious and overall the value for money is excellent when you consider that in Europe a 2 Michelin Starred restaurant would be significantly more expensive. Friends of mines were in Rio recently and I told them they MUST eat in ORO, all 4 of them went deeming as one of the best restaurants they've ever eaten in, I very much agree that ORO is not just one of the best in South America, it is one of the best in the world. If you only have time to go to one fine-dining establishment when you are in RdJ, make sure it is this one, the others are good (not Mee, was V disappointed) but ORO is another level with a lovely casual ambience. Cannot wait to return.More

Proper Michelin star experience. Half the price of the UK for top quality food. Tasting menu, didn’t wine pair but good recommendation from sommelier. Enjoyed chatting to head chef while seated at the pass.

TO AVOID - Extremely disappointing experience. For sure not a Michelin star restaurant, more of a wannabe. Food is less than mediocre, although they try to have a chic presentation the flavors are just not right. Half the menu is foreign (Asian, Middle East) and...tastes disgusting. - hard crocants with weird toppings - soy sauce filled, chewy dumplings - saltless raw meats - the mains are a disgrace to brasilian food and culture (one of the four mains is kimchi rice, it tastes burned and not like kimchi or any type of rice one would want to eat) - cocktails are bad, way to strong, and unbalanced. But they did have those big ice cubes, like a “real fancy” restaurant -.-‘ . - desert tasted good My girlfriend could not enjoy any of the dishes. I find it hard that they are proud of showcasing the top of Brazilian food. It seems they exist to make the Brazilian high class feel like they have something of quality in their city, but this is far from the truth. I am sure anyone that is familiar with European standard high cuisine will recognize this. The saddest part is that Brazil has some of the best flavors in the world, and they could not translate that into a single one of their dishes. It’s sad Michelin is part of this scam. The service is poor, waiters are rude, not well trained and very pretentious. - One of them even made fun of the way one of us was chewing a dish during the dinner to his colleagues and we saw it. He probably never tasted how hard and unchewable they’re “crocants” are. - afterwards they got extremely rude and annoyed because I repeated a question to one of his colleagues - low class like I have never seen anywhere, much less in a supposed “2 star” - I guess it’s a Google 2 star. - they took the plates before you finish chewing and didn’t ask once if we enjoyed anything. There are tables at the entrance of the bathroom and tables under the stairs I think any decent person would be much more happy going to a traditional high end Brazilian food spot than this experimental failureMore

I really wanted to love Oro but the experience left me a little cold even before I got sick from the food. I had the shorter tasting menu with ten bite-size "snacks", two main courses and a dessert, plus the wine pairing. The snacks were...creatively and beautifully presented and largely delicious, and the wines were excellent, but the main courses were disappointingly tiny and not particularly memorable, and I was underwhelmed by the coconut dessert. I couldn't help comparing the experience to the (mindblowing) tasting menu and wine pairing I'd had a few days beforehand at Aramburu in Buenos Aires. Most of the dishes I was served there were incredibly memorable whereas the dishes I had at Oro were enjoyable to eat but none of them left any sort of lasting impression on me - except for when I woke up a few hours later with a seriously upset stomach. Not what one would expect from a Michelin-starred fine dining restaurant and it spoiled my one full day in Rio the next day: I am certain it was something I ate at Oro that made me sick as I hadn't eaten anything other than cereal, a granola bar and pao de quejio earlier in the day. The kitchen is upstairs and so there is a steady procession of servers bringing dishes downstairs to the dining room on trays throughout the evening, although there is a chef's station with four bar stool seats downstairs where some food looked like it was also being plated. Because you can't see any of the kitchen action (unless you're seated on those bar stools) it gave everything a bit of an "assembly line" impersonal feel, exacerbated by the very quick pace of service. I was also disappointed not to have more of an explanation from the sommelier as to why each of the wines had been paired with the various dishes, and the quick pace at which the bite-size snacks were delivered to the table meant it was difficult to finish one wine before the next was served - the couple next to me ended up with three different wines on the table at once by the time their main courses were served. I feel bad leaving this review because the service was generally lovely (particularly as my tourist Portuguese is pretty poor - the servers were delightful and all spoke great English) and I did enjoy the "snacks", but I felt this was an underwhelming tasting menu for the price even before getting sick from it.More
