The tables will rock back and forth as the floors are so old they are not level anymore. The ambience takes you back in time. If you are lucky enough to eat there during the warm months the veranda/porch the over looks the outside dining area is fantastic but what really makes the place great is the food. The excellent... We had supper there on a Monday night about a week ago. I love eating in historic old taverns of which this is certainly one. It was a warm evening and we were able to sit outside for dinner on a second story porch. The menu was nicely varied, but what caught my wife's eye was several German entries, one... More

Our first trip to the Tavern and on a Monday. The history of the building is amazing but the food was outstanding. The menu is full of great choices and the waiter Duane made some great suggestions. He was a top shelf waiter and kept our wine pored and our water glasses full. Chef Joseph is a master in the... More

Andrew Johnson and the King of France ate in this place. My husband and I were just visiting and didn't know you needed reservations to visit or I would have gotten them in advance. I would have loved to eat there but just seeing the building and understanding the history behind it was definitely worth seeing. I am amazed this... More

Recommended to us by a local, we spent a fine evening here, listening to the creak of historic stairs and ceilings, enjoying the well maintained historic rooms and the uniformly excellent food. A reservation was helpful and with just a little effort, parking was readily available. Easy to miss from the outside, this was an unexpected gem.

We ate dinner at The Tavern during a recent visit to Abingdon. We ate before attending a performance at the Barter Theater, which is just down the road. We walked to the restaurant (about 10 minutes) from the Martha Washington Inn. The Tavern is within an extremely old and historic building, and it is very well maintained. There is a... More

Had a good meal for the price. The building is amazing, haunted and great for history buffs. A definite visit if you are in the area. Ask for a tour of the upstairs, markings on wall are bed numbers when it was a civil war hospital.

We were in Abingdon to celebrate our wedding anniversary, go to the Barter Theater, and eat at The Tavern for the first time. We were seated promptly with no waiting. Our server one of the best ever. The filet, scallops, and salmon were prepared to perfection. It was wonderful dining experience in a building with so much history.

The food and selection of draft beer were excellent. They had the best Jagerschnitzel I had ever had.

We live in Abingdon, but it's been awhile since we had been to the Tavern. On date night last Saturday we decided to give it another go. I don't know why we haven't been here more frequently. The server was extremely friendly and did a wonderful job attending to our needs. The food was great. I had Scallops and the... More
