3:30pm in a regular day. We were getting out of temples and all the options around were already or about to close. Luckily we found this spot. Besides being open, food is delicious and reasonably priced. Only challenge is to choose between Udon and Soba. Tip: both of them are freaking delicious ;)

We visited the Kinkajuji temple on 31 Dec and found this authentic Japanese noodle shop on our way to Ryuanji/Omiro-Ninnaji. Everyone was enjoying a bowl of the year end noodle happily so we joined. We were explained that Japanese eats noodle on 31 Dec to expect long (like Soba) Longevity in the following years. Taste was great but serving was... More

We stopped here in between temple visits for lunch. The restaurant setting is fairly traditional with very friendly staff. The noodles were very tasty and we enjoyed a lovely lunch while we relaxed between temple visits. Many of the streets leading to the temples have small take out joints so you can eat while you walk and e've done that... More

Interesting menu with wide selections of different types of noodles and udon. Excellent service. Small but very attractive restaurant located in between Ryoanji and Kinkakuji. Delicious and fresh. Authentic spot extremely popular among locals.

The Nodles soup here is a must try. There is a nodles soup hot pot that makes you keep eating and making noises from your mouth

We happened on this restaurant walking from Ryoan-ji Temple to Kinkaku-ji, and were pleasantly surprised to find such a great spot for lunch near the temple. The tempura soba as well as black sesame tofu were very good, and the fried chicken was the best I've had in a decade. Setting was serene, service was good, and the waitresses were... More

We were looking for a spot to grab soba noodles after our visit to Kinkakuji. There didn't appear to be many well rated food options in the vicinity, but fortunately we stumbled upon Gontaro on our walk to Ryoanji. We ordered the Tenzaru soba (cold soba noodles served with a side variety of tempura). Was a great find!

Staying in Northern Kyoto

Neighbourhood Profile
Northern Kyoto
Hot springs and historic temples characterize the leafy landscapes of Northern Kyoto. Acres of tranquil residential streets are interrupted by some of Kyoto's most gorgeous architectural gems, including the majestic Golden Pavilion of Kinkakuji, the serene artistry of the Ryoanji Temple rock gardens, and the bold red paint across the structures of Enryakuji Temple. Once a religious core of the city, the district now boasts some of its most remote and peaceful hot springs, as well as a few of its best family-run mom-and-pop restaurants. A blend of extremely local at its outskirts, and highly peopled at its tourist centers, Northern Kyoto nonetheless retains a halcyon air in harmony with nature.
