Hidden in a small side street, nice place. They have stalls where you can sit in a small group Food is good, focus on sushi - good fish quality. Chawanmushi was good as well. Good choice of drinks. Staff is friendly but lack a bit of flexibility. Good place for sushi with reasonable prices.

If you never had propper sushi you might be delighted... If you are used to have sushi this place is almost as bad as the worst sushi place in Europe. And it wasn't that cheap... 300 yen cover charge is ridiculous

The sashimi and fish was so fresh! Usually there's a queue to this place but we managed to get in without having to wait (maybe it was the rain). They also have an English menu. The only downside is that there is a JPY324 cover charge per person - they serve you a small portion of jellyfish salad which is... More

We stumbled upon this restaurant in Pontocho. We had an incredible meal of fresh sushi prepared right in front of us. It was delicious. We were pleasantly surprised by the price of our bill as it was less expensive than we were anticipating for such high quality food. We definitely found this good value and would recommend this restaurant.

If you are going here, it's a bit tucked away in an alley, easy to miss! We were in line for Chao Chao which had a huge waiting line, so decided to go here in stead. The place is nice, clean, and the sushi is fine. Probably not the very best you can get, but at a reasonable price it's... More

Very surprise with all the rave review. Went in Jan 2017 family of 4. For true sushi lover, this restaurant only serves average sushi. Maybe for the price, it's ok. 2 family members fell sick the next day who had the shell looking thing that's on their menu. It tasted bitter and wasn't nice. Sorry. Not my restaurant.

We were very suprised in a very good way about this place even after all the good reviews we've read about it. The sushi was 10/10 and so were the prices and the attitude. Very cozy/warm place and its at a very good spot. Try not to miss is as it's entrance is in an alley just before the end... More

Had the best meal from my trip to Japan at this sushi restaurant! We discovered this place online after looking for some sushi places near Gion it was great! The sushi was fresh and delicious! My favourite was the unagi (eel) It was also awesome getting to see the chefs make them right in front of you. They also had... More

Staying in Pontocho

Neighbourhood Profile
Though small by comparison, Pontocho is one of Kyoto's most spirited and memorable neighborhoods. A narrow street straddling the Kamogawa River, it is Kyoto's busiest nightlife spot. When darkness falls, Pontocho's many signs and lanterns bolt to life, making the area glow with invitations to passers-by to come inside and pull up a chair. Its restaurants and bars sprawl onto the riverbank, providing a friendly atmosphere and delicious food. Verandas are always filled with people young and old crowding tables, biting into hot yakitori or sipping cold beers. It is a culinary heart of Kyoto as much as one of its most laid-back, clamorous, and entertaining evening hotspots. Pontocho has more of an amiable vibrancy to it than an elegant one, attracting newcomers, local veterans, and everyone in between, in casual attire like sneakers and jeans.
