We had been to Kyoto 3 times, for some reason always come for a Tofu lunch here, of course always a long wait to get in, some time we have to wait a hour plus, maybe become our habit, coming here is on our must list, they only open for lunch and close on Thursday, hard to explain why we... More

Everything perfect. Wonderful lunch in traditional setting. Had to sit or kneel on tatami floor, which added to the peaceful garden ambience.

I last ate at this place 20 years ago on my only previous visit to Japan, which lasted all of 5 days. Ever since then, I've been dying to return, but either was distracted by other work or travel, or else decided to put it off for once reason or another. Finally, my wife and I came to spend an... After a long morning walking the streets of Higashiyama, viewing the temples and battling crowds of tourists, Okutan provided a lovely meal in a peaceful garden setting- complete with shoji screens and tatami mats. The tofu dishes were excellent, especially the sesame tofu, which I could eat every day. The waitresses are friendly and explain the dishes and how to... More

This is a quaint restaurant at the southern end of the 'Philosopher’s Path' next to the temple grounds. It only serves one set meal, and the setting is low tables sitting on cushions. The food is served in a series of courses, but begins with sesame tofu and yam soup, followed by fried tofu on sticks, then boiled tofu in... More

This is a classic temple vegetarian/ shojin ryori restaurant. There was only one menu offered, which was pretty much delivered all at once. The room and gardens are beautiful, and the food is the standard Kyoto tofu multi-course meal. All of the food was good, but paled in comparison to our meal at Shorian the day before -- similar menu,... More

I don't normally contribute or read restaurant reviews on Tripadvisor (tastes, budgets and expectations vary!) but this was an experience as much as a meal: charming service seated in sight of a beautiful temple garden, with an unexpected fixed multi-course vegetarian menu. I will never think of tofu in the same narrow prejudiced way again.

My only issue was the 1 hour and 40 minute wait outside (but we came in the peak season, probably the most busy weekend of a year). The food is nice, definitely very enjoyable if you like tofu. There is only 1 course (around 3500 JPY). I heard rumours that the restaurant dates back to the 13th century, although it... More

This place has a single set menu, vegetarian. If that thought scares you, I can tell you that my husband, a real carnivore, loved the food so much on our first visit that he asked when we could come back. We have eaten at other Zen temple restaurants in Kyoto, and their copycat menus have nothing on this place. Classic... More
