Hotel recommendation at short notice and wonderful experience. Opted for the sushi and sashimi with sake at 22,000 per person. Worth every yen! Great welcome and ambience by husband and wife team with their son working in the background. Simply sublime sushi and amazing flavour and tastes. Highly recommend and you will not be disappointed. Fab location too.

As othrs have noted, the restaurant seats 6 but often there are fewer diners. In my case there were two others who left half way through my meal. The chef has excellent English and was eager to explain myriad spectacular of Edo style sushi. The fish was delicious not just because of its freshness but due to the subtle flavors... More

My wife and I ate here about a year ago during our stay in Kyoto. We managed to book spots on relatively short notice, a lucky break for a restaurant this special and this small. Simply put, this was far and away the best sushi meal my wife and I have ever eaten. The chef and his small staff are... More

Decided to give this place a try based on reviews. Overall very good dining experience. The place is operated by a husband, wife and daughter team - great coordination. We made reservations for dinner. Food quality is very good though it can get expensive depending on the course menu you choose upon making advance reservations.

Stumbled upon this fantastic place in Gion. Sampled a variety of dishes (tempura, sashimi, sizzling pot). All were excellent and delicious. Would come back in a heartbeat.

It was an incredible dinner. The very small restaurant has place for 6 but our chef wanted just to have 4 to concentrate better and give us an amazing sushi experience. It is worth the price.

Me and my wife went for several sushi restaurants in Japan. These one, if you are looking for great quality, is special. Not cheap, not fancy, but it really deliveries the amazing tastes of Kyoto.

Small intimate place, as most good places are in Japan. Incredibly fresh product treated with absolute care. It was an experience to see the chef preparing everything.

This place serves one of the better sushi in Kyoto. Love the rice and the freshness of the fish combined. Recommended to come and try if you are in Kyoto.

There are only two , Michelin starred Sushi restaurants in Kyoto and my wife and I had a date night tonight without our two kids at Matsudaya in the Gion district of Kyoto. We are on a two week trip to Japan with our kids from Toronto, Canada. It was in intimate setting as the chef only prepares food in... More

Staying in Gion

Neighbourhood Profile
Gion is Kyoto's famed Geisha District (called "Geiko" in Kyoto). Though Gion's many tea houses and entertainment restaurants are closed to foreigners, Geiko and Maiko in their traditional makeup with gilded hair in full kimono can be seen drifting the streets on their way to and from work, where they fan dance, sing, and play instruments for customers. Gion lights up at night, when the ancient-looking streets glow with lanterns along the river, where weeping willows catch the starlight and the air is warmed with conversation. Groups pass through to populate the restaurants and bars along the riverfront, but Gion still manages to be a mostly quiet district, due in large part to limited automotive traffic through many of its streets. Gion is a wonderful place to indulge in Kyoto's local and customary cuisines, and is best enjoyed after dark.
