We were there on a Monday evening. It was nice and quiet and they had a couple of good craft beers but they were 1000jpy (admittedly our first day in the city, but seems expensive), friendly staff who spoke English

For such a clean and health conscious people, I'm so surprised smoking is allowed in bars! We were pretty disappointed in the Gael after reading such great reviews. Hard to find, no windows, dark and very smoky bar. I recommend the Man In The Moon instead- at least the windows can open to let the smoke out! (Many Westerners aren't... More

After a lengthy tour in Japan and a long day of touring Kyoto we were on the lookout for something familiar when we found this Irish Pub. As Pubs of this nature seldom disappoint we gave it a go. When we arrived I immediately noticed that an Australian Rubgy League match was playing on the televison. The manager noticed my... More

Recently back here and was able to hear some great performers. There is an open mic night on the first Wednesday of the month and I was impressed with the high quality of the musicians. The Guinness is great here as well.

I've been fascinated by these Irish-themed pubs appearing on the upper floors of a modern Japanese building. Gael does it pretty well though and has a good drink range - high prices but OK during happy hour. I ate some fried cambenbert - greatly inferior to the same dish I had at a Japanese restaurant two nights earlier - and... More

After a couple of weeks in Japan went looking for a pub and found this little gem hidden away on the 2nd floor of what appears to be an office block off Shijo Street - station end. It's not very large but had a group of vocal young travellers, a few couples and a musician setting up - I'm sure... More

Visiting here after a day of sightseeing in the cold warmed us up no end. We decided to have dinner and the food was really good quality and prepared freshly. I had the fish and chips. The batter was light and crispy and the fish was delicious. Also had a very nice pint of Guinness to go with it. Atmosphere... More

Went there twice recently and enjoyed it very much. Staff is great and the Irish music was fantastic.

Nicely decorated, friendly pub with English speaking staff and Irish beer on draft. Drinks are a bit pricey ($6-9), but it's Japan.

Staying in Gion

Neighbourhood Profile
Gion is Kyoto's famed Geisha District (called "Geiko" in Kyoto). Though Gion's many tea houses and entertainment restaurants are closed to foreigners, Geiko and Maiko in their traditional makeup with gilded hair in full kimono can be seen drifting the streets on their way to and from work, where they fan dance, sing, and play instruments for customers. Gion lights up at night, when the ancient-looking streets glow with lanterns along the river, where weeping willows catch the starlight and the air is warmed with conversation. Groups pass through to populate the restaurants and bars along the riverfront, but Gion still manages to be a mostly quiet district, due in large part to limited automotive traffic through many of its streets. Gion is a wonderful place to indulge in Kyoto's local and customary cuisines, and is best enjoyed after dark.
