We give this place a go as it was two blocks from our ryokan. This 'Spanish' restaurant did a decent job of tapas and variations on the theme, with a few Agu dishes, one of which we had a go at. Being used to tapas generally coming quite cheap, this ended up being a comparatively expensive meal, but the quality... More

This was a great restaurant serving Paella and charcoaled grilled lamb, which we had as our main course. For a starter we had squid and spanish omelett, both delicious. For dessert we had cheese cake and vanilla ice cream with cacao sherry. We were honestly happy with all 6 meals and would have gone back if we should not leave... More

Make a reservation! We didn't but they fit us in at the end of the bar. The service is amazing! I had Agu Pork and my girlfriend had Tripe. Both were cooked to perfection. Everything we had was absolutely delicious and 100% worth the money. If you have doubts about where to eat stop now and make the reservation.

two blocks away from our hotel (Okura). We arrived by mistake, due to a wrong recommendation from hotel staff (a restaurant one block away, was closed that weekday). Nothing is spanish here, nor a food preparation, nor a spanish speaking or looking person, nor a relevant spanish decoration. The menu was not translated! Bread was old and 'reheated', tapas were... A nice treat in the center of Kyoto. Great if you're looking for a little variety from the local cuisine. Lovely little upstairs dining room. Waitstaff that were incredibly friendly and attentive even by Japanese standards. Great sangria, nice Spanish cheeses and tapas, tender pork. Really enjoyed it.

Good spanish restaurant with small tapas. The jam quality is awesome and mahou beer tastes as in Spain. Great ambience!

Small tapas bar with very helpful, friendly staff! The bar selection is limited but good enough (Mahou Spanish Beer is pretty tasty). The grilled vegetable tapas were excellent with an almond, garlic, pepper, tomato "sauce". The other dishes were also tasty. Overall, the wonderful ambiance, staff, and food made for a great evening!

I have had lunch here and dinner. The staff had more time to chat during lunch and suggested a wonderful Spanish red wine by the glass. It's just east of city hall. I will be back.

"Spanish char-grilled cuisine"

El Fogon meaning "the stove" in Spanish features chargrilled cuisine. Spanish style grilling is kept simple to allow for the natural flavours to come through. Simply grilled with salt, you can enjoy all the blessings of nature. The chargrilled ingredients are crisp on the outside and juicy in the middle, sealing in the natural flavour. Please enjoy a chargrilled meal, which is not so easily prepared at home.

"Spanish cuisine using Japanese ingredients"

Spanish Iberian pigs are famous for their rich black color and flavorful meat. We serve "Agu pork" from Okinawa, which is comparable to Iberian pigs in color and taste.

Staying in City Center

Neighbourhood Profile
City Center
No district of Kyoto is quite as representative of its blended nature as the City Center. By day, the covered shopping arcades along Kawaramachi and Shijo Street bring deal hunters and fashionistas out in droves to peruse the clothing, accessories, gifts, and home goods offerings. When it grows dark, the City Center is a hip spot for nightlife, alive with bars and clubs. A trendy culinary scene and an abundance of local watering holes give the Center its youthful vibrancy. In contrast, the quieter areas of the City Center seem a world away, shielded from noise by the foliage of the public gardens and zen spaces surrounding the area's shrines, castles, and the Imperial Palace. These ancient and sacred spots are seamlessly folded into the scenery, providing a respite from the energy of the city, but close enough to put you directly back onto the pulse of the city when you're ready.
