The food here is just brilliant with tastes and textures that amaze a European like myself. Amusingly seated on the floor, served by very professional ladies, the dishes keep coming and the wonderful surprises include some made of wonderfully scented veggies. A pleasure and set in one of the great temple complexes that you should always visit in Kyoto.

Tucked in a quiet corner in the Kyoto Daitoku-ji temple complex, this restaurant is a gem. I don't profess to be a big veggie fan, but this meal was pretty epic. So much food (bowl after bowl after bowl), and all beautifully and originally presented, bursting with color and flavor. The garden setting was quite apropos for the zen cuisine... More

The experience as a whole, along with the food was well worth it. Not a cheap meal, but sitting outside under the trees in the garden, amidst or just outside the temple with dishes continuing to arrive at your table, I couldn't ask for more. The eggplant and ice cream were my absolute favorite, although I enjoyed every dish that... More

Home of the famous Zen cusine right outside Daitoku-ji temple. It serves kaiseki-style multi-course lunches from around $30 to $60. The lower-end lunch is filling enough, and the tea refills are free. We walked in at around 12:30pm without a need for a reservation in high season, on a Tuesday. The food was interesting and very high quality, as expected,... More

Course after course of delightful vegetarian items, served in red lacquerware bowls that all ultimately nested together (15 of them) in Babushka doll style. The food was delicious. Seating accommodations were harsh on our old Western knees, and it was cold inside.

Enjoyed a delicious shojin ryori lunch at this restaurant within the Daitokuji temple. It took us a little while to find it on the sprawling grounds but it was worth the search. Enjoyed a fantastic, elaborate lunch outdoors - could not have been more picturesque. We had the smallest lunch set (3,240 yen) and the small dishes just kept coming.... More

Izusen is a shojin ryori restaurant hidden away within Daitokuji temple complex. My wife and i and our adult son had lunch here during our Thanksgiving trip to Kyoto last month. Vegan cuisine is not usually on my radar but my son convienced me that part of the Kyoto cultural experience was to dine in a Zen temple restaurant. As... More

Staying in Northern Kyoto

Neighbourhood Profile
Northern Kyoto
Hot springs and historic temples characterize the leafy landscapes of Northern Kyoto. Acres of tranquil residential streets are interrupted by some of Kyoto's most gorgeous architectural gems, including the majestic Golden Pavilion of Kinkakuji, the serene artistry of the Ryoanji Temple rock gardens, and the bold red paint across the structures of Enryakuji Temple. Once a religious core of the city, the district now boasts some of its most remote and peaceful hot springs, as well as a few of its best family-run mom-and-pop restaurants. A blend of extremely local at its outskirts, and highly peopled at its tourist centers, Northern Kyoto nonetheless retains a halcyon air in harmony with nature.
