Incredible ramen (thick with great texture, clearly good flour) and delicious broth. So much more flavorful and healthy than regular ramen. Add ofu (a gluten protein) and kiri tom tom (not sure about the spelling but sounds like that), a cone of the same rice used for mochi. I wish I could get ramen like this elsewhere! Soy sauce is... The restaurant is so cute and cosy. The staff is super friendly and the soy milk ramen ic incredibly delicious (+vegan paradise :D with a yummy chocolate cake and soy milk ice cream). Number one in my top five restaurant of Kyoto !!

Mamezen serves the best soy-based ramen I have ever had! It is hidden in a quiet Neighbourhood and we had to walk a distance from Matsugasaki Station. Will definitely be back for more!

Oh, I am so glad I made the effort to eat a bowl of noodles at Mamezen. Yes, pseudo-vegetarian ramen (I read that the chef does make use of dried fish flakes in the broth)that will knock you socks off! I am not vegetarian. In fact, I generally cringe at the idea of going out to eat and spending good... More

Oh, my, god. The soy milk ramen. thank the lord for mamezen- I am vegan and came to Japan thinking it would be easy- I was so so wrong. It's sometimes a matter of survival and just eating plain rice to get the energy. Anyway the ramen at this place is unbelievable and if I was back home in London... More

This restaurant was recommended by our tour company and we are so grateful they did. We wanted to have authentic ramen, but I am vegetarian and hadn't been able to try any yet. The food was delicious, the visual presentation was beautiful, and the setting was calm, quaint and cozy. Non-vegetarians will not be disappointed either.

Although this restaurant was small and tucked behind a narrow alley, do not be fooled by its look, because you will miss the chance to taste the best vegetarian ramen. This tiny ramen shop is famous for its soya ramen, and my god I don't even know how to describe the deliciousness of it. The broth was smooth, silky, packed... More

Staying in City Center

Neighbourhood Profile
City Center
No district of Kyoto is quite as representative of its blended nature as the City Center. By day, the covered shopping arcades along Kawaramachi and Shijo Street bring deal hunters and fashionistas out in droves to peruse the clothing, accessories, gifts, and home goods offerings. When it grows dark, the City Center is a hip spot for nightlife, alive with bars and clubs. A trendy culinary scene and an abundance of local watering holes give the Center its youthful vibrancy. In contrast, the quieter areas of the City Center seem a world away, shielded from noise by the foliage of the public gardens and zen spaces surrounding the area's shrines, castles, and the Imperial Palace. These ancient and sacred spots are seamlessly folded into the scenery, providing a respite from the energy of the city, but close enough to put you directly back onto the pulse of the city when you're ready.
