This place is overlooking river and famous Arashiyama Togetsu bridge, near Monkey park and bamboo forest. sometimes they have long sue to get in, but its a good sign! They have little souvenir shop as well. Good soba at reasonable price!

Near the monkey park and the bamboo forest, Arashiyama offers so much to see and do. If you're in Kyoto don't miss this stop. Take a rickshaw through the bamboo forest for something truly special.

On day 2 in our trip to Japan in Kyoto, we went to Matsugae Restaurant (sister restaurant) after a long and hot walk through the Bamboo Path. Already inside, we realized they gave us the tofu menu, and since neither of us did not eat tofu, we asked for the normal menu, which they brought. We ordered the food and... More

Nice view over the bridge. The service quite average, very little English spoken. Good ok, but limited choice and without advice difficult to choose.

We stumbled upon this place when visiting nearby attractions in the mid-afternoon. There was no wait and we ate at the soba restaurant. The soba set was very good but most of all, what a view! I highly recommend this place.

This two storied Japanese restaurant perhaps has the best view of the scenic tourist town of Arashiyama. Overlooking the river, it serves Soba & Tempura. Best time to visit is autumn. Try to have a seat on the top floor facing the river.

We went to Arashima as part of our honeymoon trip back in early 2013. It was a cold morning and we decided to have lunch before heading back to Kyoto city. We stopped by this place as I love soba and the price was quite reasonable comparing to the other places around. We were lucky enough to get a seat... More

We planned to visit this serene soba place after our half-day trip in Arashiyama. Honestly were a little hesitant when told the wait was 30-40 mins but decided to stick to our plan. Very glad that we did. Hands down the best hand made buck wheat noodle I've ever had. The set meal was a blast. My friend had the... More

We try this restaurant in Arashiyama. The restaurant has 2 side, 1 side serve soba and the other serve tofu. We choose the tofu one. The set menu is delicious. Both the cold and hot tofu are very satisfying. The surrounding of restaurant is very good also. We can relax, enjoy our food and the scenery. They have english menu... More

Staying in Western Kyoto

Neighbourhood Profile
Western Kyoto
Western Kyoto is home to some of the city's best eccentricities. Kyoto's Saga-Toriimoto Preserved Street takes visitors back in time to the Meiji Period, where old homes have been transformed into tea houses and eateries. Pleasure boats drift down the riverbank, under wooden bridges that beckon nature lovers to hiking trails and botanical walks. The area's famously tall bamboo groves, monkey park, and impressive vistas during the Hanami cherry blossom viewing season mean that it is busiest in warmer months, though also gorgeous in the fall, when the mountains and hills along the banks turn multi-colored. Historic and engaging, even the rail cars in Western Kyoto seek to exemplify its traditional nature and scenic beauty. Many people, including natives, come to visit the 1,200 rakan statues at the Otagi Nenbutsuji Temple, which is still in use as a religious site.
