We visited twice - our first day in Kyoto and our last a total of five days. Delighted. Friendly owners, helpful attendants, and excellent cakes and pastries to go with equally good coffee. I had the New York cheesecake and it was excellent.

Papa Jon's takes cheesecake and coffee to a new level in Kyoto. Not only do they offer a variety of cheesecakes, but they also offer savory dishes and coffee as well. The cheese cakes and gelato are outstanding. Additionally, there homemade lemon lime soda is fresh and delcious. On all of my stops, I've yet to try any savory dishes.... More

Here is one of my favorite cafes in the world. Since I started to go to the small cafe near Doshisha University 12years ago, I visit their branch on Teramachi st, in Shijo area everytime i go to Kyoto (because it is easy to access to the branch than the main one). I think here is the place I had... More

Papa Jon’s Café, Kyoto ( Shokokuji branch ) My favourite café in Kyoto. It is quietly located at the entrance of Shokokuji and it is close to Doshisha University at the Imadegawa station. Not a noticeable spot, but this cafe is popular and earned a good reputation in the city. Very small inside, but the atmosphere is perfect for a... More

I am the owner of Papa Jon's and very glad to see such positive reviews about the cafe. We have been at the Doshisha University Location for twenty years always working to maintain high standard of service and quality. We make our New York Cheesecake and it is the real thing (I'm from New York so I know.) We also... More

I take a break here everytime I visit Kyoto. Their variety of cheesecakes are everyone's favourite in Kyoto. I love their pistachio cheesecake, the taste is one and only. I'm almost addicted to it. There are some branche shops in Kyoito. You can find a branch between Kiyomizu temple and Koudaiji temple.(not eat-in cafe, just take-out. May be the shop... More

Staying in Northern Kyoto

Neighbourhood Profile
Northern Kyoto
Hot springs and historic temples characterize the leafy landscapes of Northern Kyoto. Acres of tranquil residential streets are interrupted by some of Kyoto's most gorgeous architectural gems, including the majestic Golden Pavilion of Kinkakuji, the serene artistry of the Ryoanji Temple rock gardens, and the bold red paint across the structures of Enryakuji Temple. Once a religious core of the city, the district now boasts some of its most remote and peaceful hot springs, as well as a few of its best family-run mom-and-pop restaurants. A blend of extremely local at its outskirts, and highly peopled at its tourist centers, Northern Kyoto nonetheless retains a halcyon air in harmony with nature.
