Initially found on foursquare. 700 m walk from the temple. A bit excentric, no tourist... people waiting in line to be served either traditional Japanese way or seated. Fast, effective and very friendly staff. Got advice from 1 customer on how to choose.

Visited with friends, very friendly staff, will help you out if you don't understand japanese. You should definitely try the okonomiyaki, can't have enough. but be careful could be very crowded on weekends

A random location but well worth the walk as it is amazing food. Cheap and simple the Japanese pizza and yaki soba and both great dishes and make the queuing outside worth the wait. Definitely worth a visit when in Kyoto.

Oh my God, I miss this place so much. If you're visiting Kyoto, and want to try local casual/street food, visit this place, but make sure you take at least one friend as this eatery serves huge portion. Be ready to queue - but it's worth waiting. My recommendations are - pork okonomiyaki (Japanese pizza) and yakisoba (fried noodle). Don't... More

This restaurant is especially loved by students who need to eat a lot for cheap ! The quality is very good and the service very efficient ! You would always see a huge crow from outside especially around 19h. The best time to get a place is after lunch (1pm around) and at the beginning of the time (5pm). Don't... More

Nice staff and decent prices. The food is great but certainly not everyone's thing. The topping is made of various sauces and with herbs and fish flakes sprinkled on top of it. If you are not sure whether you like it or not, ask the staff to leave half of the dish without topping.

Good food, friendly staff . The pancake was particularly good, inexpensive too, small pancake or yakisoba for one person each costs 550 yen with meat. I would go again !

Me and a group of 5 others visited This restaurant last night and we were more than satisfied. Service is fast, and you can tell that the chefs have it all down to a science. We kneeled in front of our grill tables (separated by 3's at 2 tables) and were immediately approached by one of the cooks. Who despite... More

This is an amazing restaurant. I recommend it to anyone wanting to try Okonomiyaki. The staff is friendly and treats first-timers like regulars. The food is better than the best. Once you eat here you will not want Okonomiyaki from anywhere else. It is a small place with only about 10 tables. There is usually a wait, about 20 mins... More

Staying in Western Kyoto

Neighbourhood Profile
Western Kyoto
Western Kyoto is home to some of the city's best eccentricities. Kyoto's Saga-Toriimoto Preserved Street takes visitors back in time to the Meiji Period, where old homes have been transformed into tea houses and eateries. Pleasure boats drift down the riverbank, under wooden bridges that beckon nature lovers to hiking trails and botanical walks. The area's famously tall bamboo groves, monkey park, and impressive vistas during the Hanami cherry blossom viewing season mean that it is busiest in warmer months, though also gorgeous in the fall, when the mountains and hills along the banks turn multi-colored. Historic and engaging, even the rail cars in Western Kyoto seek to exemplify its traditional nature and scenic beauty. Many people, including natives, come to visit the 1,200 rakan statues at the Otagi Nenbutsuji Temple, which is still in use as a religious site.
