It was a very rainy evening in Kyoto, we had just finished a 4 hour walking tour, we were wet, cold and hungry!! We literally stumbled upon this lovely Italian restaurant by the water!! We walked in and were greeted by our gracious host. A good start. We had a delicious meal that included minestrone, spaghetti, salad not to mention beautiful... More

Located in 125-year-old machiya (townhouse), Scorpione has been restored and provides a the perfect atmosphere for the chef’s innovative cuisine. As to be expected in Japan (at this price point) the ingredients and preparation were inventive and excellent. I had a delightful Carbonara. Lunch JPY3000-8000; Dinner 6,000 to 15,000. Nice wine and sake (nihonshu) slections. Part of the Kiwa group.

We were wandering aimlessly looking for somewhere to eat on our first night in Kyoto and turned around and saw this place. The waiter (who was fantastic) made sure we understood it was Italian and not Japanese :-). The interior is lovely, dimly lit and nice atmosphere and the food was beautiful. We had the mussels entree which was very... More

My wife and I visited for dinner and it was pretty good. The starters were reasonable but a little basic. I was expecting a little more than mozzarella and ham. Ok it's an Italian restaurant but I would hope for something a little more creative. However, the pork terrine was lovely. The mains are the best bit. The foie gras... More

Nice italian mix with japanese products. Elegant and great atmosphere but overpriced. Was a good restaurant, but there are better options in this quarter. Small dishes if you are hungry, but yhe presentation and yhr service is excellent.

I took my two teenage children for dinner, while visiting Kyoto. The staff was warm and professional from the moment we headed up the path, attending to our every perceived need or desire. The food arrived promptly and was exquisite - prepared to perfection! I'm sure the steak was the best I've had anywhere in the world, as was the... More

My partner and I needed a quick lunch before leaving Kyoto. We had tried a lot of Japanese restaurants so were keen on having something more European. Scorpione had amazing lunch deals, around $AU25 for entree of pasta, main was lamb and dessert and coffee. The food was delicious and well presented. The staff were great and the view out... More

Based a write up in a travel guide and the other reviews, I had been looking forward to this but it did not live up to expectations. The 'fusion' aspect of the menu was minor; I don't eat meat so I chose from the a la carte menu and the meal, particularly the main course, was extremely expensive (2800 yen... More

So we were completely amazing that this place was empty aside from us. We loved it and thought the food was on pare with restaurants in NYC. The host/waiter was so good to us. This was an excellent break from Japanese cuisine. Great location to stroll Gion after dinner.

We chose Scorpione as wanted a change from the many superb pure Japanese meals we've had! Scorpione offers a fusion style between Italian and Japanese. We loved the location in Gion and thought the old townhouse setting charming. The service was swift and attentive and the food was very fresh and beautifully presented. Oddly for a Saturday dinner time the... More

Staying in Gion

Neighbourhood Profile
Gion is Kyoto's famed Geisha District (called "Geiko" in Kyoto). Though Gion's many tea houses and entertainment restaurants are closed to foreigners, Geiko and Maiko in their traditional makeup with gilded hair in full kimono can be seen drifting the streets on their way to and from work, where they fan dance, sing, and play instruments for customers. Gion lights up at night, when the ancient-looking streets glow with lanterns along the river, where weeping willows catch the starlight and the air is warmed with conversation. Groups pass through to populate the restaurants and bars along the riverfront, but Gion still manages to be a mostly quiet district, due in large part to limited automotive traffic through many of its streets. Gion is a wonderful place to indulge in Kyoto's local and customary cuisines, and is best enjoyed after dark.
