Eight of us had dinner at Awomb. It was our first time there and found the experience fun, unexpected, and delicious. A couple of us were not sashimi eaters but become one after this experience. The delicate offerings paired with homemade ginger ale and sweet plum wine made for an eating experience we will not forget. We will probably bring... More

Awomb restaurant's interior space is combinations of Japanese style & modern design. The food presentation is beautiful & it's interesting to find your own creative way to decide how to eat. Fresh Tokyo vegetables & raw fish. If you want to have an sushi experience rather than a traditional way. Come to try it.

AWOMB is a unique experience that I would definitely recommend anyone to try and at such a reasonable cost. The first barrier however is to get inside. AWOMB tucked away in a little side street off of Kyoto's main center, you first line up to get your name on the list. Everyone in your party needs to be there else... More

I brought my Russian colleague to have experience of Temaki style of Sushi. They are really happy to make their own Sushi.

This restaurant is tucked away along the side roads near the main Karasuma main road. Use google if you can to guide you as I can't recall any distinct landmarks or specific directions. We tried three times before we managed to get a seat here. The first time was on Sunday- apparently this is a reservation only day. We tried... More

With a bit of disrespect for other commentators, this is not usual kaiseki cuisine at all but a do-it-yourself plate of suchi maki with utterly delicious fillings and asides: from the usual porky, Kombu, bonito, to the unusual: Parilla flowers, sweet potatoes with Thai spicing. The fish is responsibly line caught and succulent. The whole experience takes a bit of... More

First, I want to mention that the locations do not match (nor the photos of the interior). On the A WOMB website, the location is listed near Shijo station, where we had our meal. The interior was very sleek and minimalist, just my style. The night's menu was a DIY sushi kit for ~1500 yen. We were delivered a large... More

Beautifully lit bare concrete and pale wood restaurant/gallery/boutique. A stunning 11m long window that overlooks a kokeniwa (silent garden) covered by moss. Sushi and keiseki multi course meal that is quite unrefined compared to the polished setting or handsome tableware. The passion is there but not necessarily the skill or talent. Have a coffee. Treat this more like an independent... More

Groovy architecture, designer survivalist supplies, exquisite food, and very cool clothes. Access is actually pretty straight forward, it's very close to Kyoto University's design school, so there naturally a couple of bus routes that serve it. If you've got the silver pavilion on your itinerary consider including a womb for lunch. Hiroshi is a really nice guy, attentive host and... More

Well, chef-owner, artist, designer, uber-cool Hiroshi Ujita's A_WOMB gets pretty close. Journeying there is like a pilgrimage to a Zen retreat tucked in north-eastern foothills of Kyoto (30 minutes from downtown). Even with the assistance of a taxi driver, locating it was not easy with only the smallest of signs discretely signaling its presence. Our presumptuous lack of a reservation... More

Staying in City Center

Neighbourhood Profile
City Center
No district of Kyoto is quite as representative of its blended nature as the City Center. By day, the covered shopping arcades along Kawaramachi and Shijo Street bring deal hunters and fashionistas out in droves to peruse the clothing, accessories, gifts, and home goods offerings. When it grows dark, the City Center is a hip spot for nightlife, alive with bars and clubs. A trendy culinary scene and an abundance of local watering holes give the Center its youthful vibrancy. In contrast, the quieter areas of the City Center seem a world away, shielded from noise by the foliage of the public gardens and zen spaces surrounding the area's shrines, castles, and the Imperial Palace. These ancient and sacred spots are seamlessly folded into the scenery, providing a respite from the energy of the city, but close enough to put you directly back onto the pulse of the city when you're ready.
