For me, and many vegans I know, being vegan is a joy. In Kyoto, it's joy in overdrive. One can find many lovely vegan restaurants. Many people sadly have a lot of misconceptions about vegans and that's not surprising because there's a great deal of misinformation and disinformation in the public arena. Many don't really understand that for people like... More

Firstly the gardens and temple are very beautiful and well kept and worth a visit. The staff were very polite and accommodating. We first visited the bar just for a drink, while the cover charge and drinks were expensive it was worth it for the service and wonderful view. This decided us to revisit for a meal. On arrival we were... More

A different sort of vegetarian experience. Food was well presented but service was slow. Staff were good in explaining the various types of food serve. Try to get a room facing the inner garden.

We booked this for a special vegan Christmas eve meal and were unfortunately disappointed. At first, the man greeting us at the gate was clearly drunk, and the food, while well presented, was average for the price. Basic things such as the tempura course was dead cold. The surroundings were beautiful but we were underwhelmed, perhaps we chose the wrong... More

Zen monks prepare exquisitely beautiful full course vegan menu. Each dish is hand prepared. The rooms are actually converted to western style so you don't have to worry about sitting on the floor to eat. Gorgeous zen garden is also maintained by the same monks. Great place to entertain privately.

We were delighted from a very nice temple setting with Japanese garden. We were sat in private room and our vegan Keiseki set menu of 12 courses were of high standard snd beautifully presented. Staff were nice and friendly and explained dish from each course.. Overall, it was delightful experience and recommended for anyone who like to experience something different.

I took two 70's American friends. One of them hardly walk by himself and he used a walker for an aged person, but it was no problem. This "Kangaan" is not only a nice restaurant but also a beautiful zen temple. All of staffs is very kind. They have special lunch menu for 5,000 JPY. They have a Halal license.... More

We had a memorable evening because of the extraordinary cuisine and service and the enchanting ambiance. We were served in a private dining room and each course arrived at the perfect time, served on exquisite traditional ceramic and lacquer dishes. The courses were an experience of both of visual beauty and provided diversity of tastes.

A serene little bar set in the garden of an active zen-buddhist temple. Guinness on tap, small Suntory whiskey selection. Serenity is free.

Staying in City Center

Neighbourhood Profile
City Center
No district of Kyoto is quite as representative of its blended nature as the City Center. By day, the covered shopping arcades along Kawaramachi and Shijo Street bring deal hunters and fashionistas out in droves to peruse the clothing, accessories, gifts, and home goods offerings. When it grows dark, the City Center is a hip spot for nightlife, alive with bars and clubs. A trendy culinary scene and an abundance of local watering holes give the Center its youthful vibrancy. In contrast, the quieter areas of the City Center seem a world away, shielded from noise by the foliage of the public gardens and zen spaces surrounding the area's shrines, castles, and the Imperial Palace. These ancient and sacred spots are seamlessly folded into the scenery, providing a respite from the energy of the city, but close enough to put you directly back onto the pulse of the city when you're ready.
