This was a pleasant surprise in the middle of a zen garden. This is not your typical monk food, but there is plenty of food and plenty of variety, all plant based. The food is delicious and a bit pricey but the experience is worth it.

We has a wonderful lunch here. We did not have a reservation but showed up at 1:30 and were seated immediately. The food was really unique and it was wonderful to have a meal that I knew was all vegetarian. Everything was prepared with such care. I would highly recommend this place!

We really wanted to experience Buddhist temple food and Shigetsu exceeded our expectations! The meal was very filling and consisted of lots of different small plates to try. Everything was very tasty and had different textures and flavours. Even our friend who generally doesn't eat vegetarian loved his meal & we all left full and satisfied. Opening hours state 11am-2pm,... More

In the beautiful garden of Tenryuji Temple, we were served the best vegetarian food ever! We decided to have lunch at Shigetsu based on its excellent reviews. Our host in Kyoto made our reservations and we were escorted to a private room and sat down for lunch on the tatami mat. Lunch was quickly served. It was excellent! The rice... More

I never realised that Buddhist / vegan food could be so delicious. Ingredients were super fresh, carefully prepared and to my surprise pretty tasty. There was none of this fake vegetarian meat which is in vogue right now. The whole meal is unashamedly vegan (as you would expect in Buddhist temple grounds). We were a walk-in lunch party of four... Shigetsu is a restaurant that serves shojin-ryori (Buddhist cuisine) within the grounds of Tenryu-ji. So you'll have to pay admission to the garden in order to eat at Shigetsu but in return for that you get some amazing views. Buddhist cuisine is vegan, so no animal products are used at all. This may deter some people but actually the meal... More

In the grounds of the Zen Buddhist Temple of the heavenly dragon (Tenryuji) in Arashiyama I had a very special dining experience. Their vegetarian restaurant Shigetsu had the most artistically presented and tasty collection of dishes for their set lunch menu. The one thing that most impressed me though, was the care taken to make the humble soybean the centrepiece... More

Inside the grounds of Tenryuji temple in Arashimaya, is this zen restaurant which serves a sublime vegetarian zen banquet. I strongly recommend booking in advance and reserving one of the small private rooms which overlook the koi pond. We were the only people in the tatami room so felt very special. The food was amazing, and for an unforgettable experience,... More

This restaurant is located inside the Tenryuji temple area and you would need to purchase a entrance ticket in order to enter into the restaurant. The restaurant served authentic Buddhist meal and it is 100% vegetarian and you are advised to make an advance reservation as this restaurant is quite packed with guests and the restaurant will need you to... Staying in Western Kyoto

Neighbourhood Profile
Western Kyoto
Western Kyoto is home to some of the city's best eccentricities. Kyoto's Saga-Toriimoto Preserved Street takes visitors back in time to the Meiji Period, where old homes have been transformed into tea houses and eateries. Pleasure boats drift down the riverbank, under wooden bridges that beckon nature lovers to hiking trails and botanical walks. The area's famously tall bamboo groves, monkey park, and impressive vistas during the Hanami cherry blossom viewing season mean that it is busiest in warmer months, though also gorgeous in the fall, when the mountains and hills along the banks turn multi-colored. Historic and engaging, even the rail cars in Western Kyoto seek to exemplify its traditional nature and scenic beauty. Many people, including natives, come to visit the 1,200 rakan statues at the Otagi Nenbutsuji Temple, which is still in use as a religious site.
