Strolling through the streets of Kyoto, we found this place called Bamboo. It looked casual, was full of locals and we decided to give it a try, which would soon be rewarded with a perfect dinner. Seasonal dishes were prepared and served with attention to detail- and the taste of each component perfectly matched all others. My recommendation: sashimi, fried... More

We had a lovely meal at Bamboo. First we got a free appetizer: mackrel and squid made 'shabu shabu'. That is boiling broth to dip your fish into. Then we had the kyoto smoked duck, it was a small portion but very nice! The fried chicken with vinegar and tartare was to die for, and the bamboo sashimi salad was... More

great, fresh food. very nice service. menu is an interesting fusion. seems to be shared ownership/management with the delicious italian restaurant next door (kitchen occobe). try both! the waiters also go back and forth between both places.

The food and staff was amazing. Try the yakitori if you are adventurous and like stews. Blah blah blah the last one hundred characters.

Came here on a Saturday night for dinner with family. We'd made a reservation and got seated at a table in the back of the restaurant, which is non-smoking (in contrast, I believe smoking is permitted at the counter). Soon after we arrived, we were served otoshi of hamo and kelp noodles. As the restaurant took care to explain in... More

this restaurant did a good job for us. Difficult to book other recommended choices - Kyoto was very busy. They were also turning non-reserved customers away while we were there. Beef fillet with Ponzu was the tastiest piece of beef we have had so far. Tried a pleasant Japanese white wine from Nagono. Local sake which comes containing flecks of... More

The party of four next to us, from New York, was sent here from the sister restaurant around the corner because HERE had an English menu. OK, fine. For us, the food was really good, as is common in Kyoto, but the service was slow. So slow that we asked for the check a half hour after ordering another dish... More

First, I want to make sure that people know there are two locations for this restaurant. I was staying at a place near the location in Higashiyama-Sanjodori (京都府京都市東山区東山三条東入ル南側) but would find reviews, phone numbers, and links to the other location in the Kawaramachidori location (京都府京都市上京区河原町荒神口下ル東側) near Gion. In any event, be aware that there are two of these guys plus... More

Great omakase. Staff was pleasant and pro: they took time to show us each kind of fish we eat despite our extremly poorly japanese. Food was very tasty and showed a real effort in presentation and mix of saviors. Price was also very attractive. Definitively the best quality price ratio we got in kyoto (with, I emphatise, realgood quality)

Staying in City Center

Neighbourhood Profile
City Center
No district of Kyoto is quite as representative of its blended nature as the City Center. By day, the covered shopping arcades along Kawaramachi and Shijo Street bring deal hunters and fashionistas out in droves to peruse the clothing, accessories, gifts, and home goods offerings. When it grows dark, the City Center is a hip spot for nightlife, alive with bars and clubs. A trendy culinary scene and an abundance of local watering holes give the Center its youthful vibrancy. In contrast, the quieter areas of the City Center seem a world away, shielded from noise by the foliage of the public gardens and zen spaces surrounding the area's shrines, castles, and the Imperial Palace. These ancient and sacred spots are seamlessly folded into the scenery, providing a respite from the energy of the city, but close enough to put you directly back onto the pulse of the city when you're ready.
