Situated in an old "minka" style house sitting on the edge of a tranquil and pretty canal, this is a place where you will be a little crowded in and exposed to the kitchen fireworks, smells, and chatter--but that is really the point of going, isn't it! The kaiseki/omakase type dinner was just sublime in the range of flavors, beautiful... More

I made reservations through my hotel about 2 weeks in advance. I was told that I would have to leave my CC in case I did not show which was fair. One thing about the restaurant is that it is baby friendly! We wondered what my toddler would be able to eat since it’s a set menu. I was told... More

A lively restaurant serving contemporary kaiseki. This place is really fun, at least if you manage to get a counter seat where you can talk to the chefs and other guests. They serve a set course dinner, and I had eight beautifully presented and excellent tasting dishes. To that I drank beer and sake. It is surprisingly affordable, and a... More

Giro Giro offers such a fun and enjoyable dining experience. Sitting at the counter, chatting with the international guests around you and with the friendly team of cooks as they serve you plate after plate of exquisite dishes, it makes for an evening you won't soon forget. The restaurant serves what is basically a multi-course Kaiseki meal, perhaps less formal... More

Delicious food served in a buzzy, informal environment. Sitting round a bar with a number of busy chefs working in the open kitchen we were treated to course after course of delicious food. Each plate served looked like a work of art and tasted great too. I would thoroughly recommend a meal here.

Unfortunately we did not get a chance to eat at Giro Giro tonight due to an issue with our reservation. We called 4x from the US to make a reservation 1mo in advance and were very excited when we were able to secure two seats at the counter. Once we chose a hotel they called to confirm our reservation as... More

Intimate (less than 20 seated around a bar) so you could watch the chef and interact with him. The food was modern kaiseki taking advantage of locally fresh and in season products. The key was that it was all enormously creative, fun and over the top delicious! Their sake recommendations were perfect and the closer was that the price was... More

Very reasonable price for the set menu, which is always a surprise. Seeing some photos here, I guess I wasn't lucky, for my taste of food. A lot of vegetables dishes, lotus roots, aubergine and a cold noodle soup. Dessert was great though.

Giro Giro was what you would call modern Kaiseki, with surprising combination beyond my expectations. Excellently crafted dishes with enough finesse and balance. For 3800Yen, this its one superb meal... A must visit if you want to taste modern Kaiseki

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighbourhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
