Legendary Hokkaido fried chicken (“Zengi”) is on order at Naruto. They have other things on the menu (decent sushi), but when you come here, you must try the chicken. We found it to be delicious; super crispy on the outside and succulent on the inside. The batter is delicious. We couldn’t have been happier.
In terms of the ordering system, which is a bit unique, after you’re seated, you look at the menu and then go to the counter at the front and order, sit back down at your table, and wait for your food to be delivered. Don’t forget to bring the card with your table number with you when ordering.
And a word of warning … if you come here on the weekend, be prepared to wait unless you arrive right at opening. This restaurant is probably the most popular restaurant in Otaru and is super crowded on the weekends.

We came here for their famous Otaru fried chicken called Wakadori Hanshin Age, which is half a crispy deep fried and lightly salted chicken . The other dish is the Zangi chicken, which is coated in flour and deep fried. Both types of fried chicken are very tender and juicy filled with flavors. The menu also includes other dishes like noodles, seafood don and many other dishes.
The shop has a very simple and causal setting with tatami sitting or tables. It gets quite crowded during lunch time but the food is served rather quickly.
The shop is located near to the train station is about a 20 minutes walk from the main
Otaru Sakaimachi shopping street, so do be prepared to allocate sufficient time getting here.

We had heard we should try this chicken, so we got the zangi set and zangi bowl along with some cheese eggrolls. The zangi bowl was pretty good. The zangi set was good, but we probably won’t try the cheese eggrolls again (fine, but plain).
The restaurant was very popular and I’m glad we went.

If you come to Otaru, you should try their freshly fried chicken halves!
Exploring Otaru during the day, we went there early in the evening.
We arrived at 6pm on a weekday and there were 4 groups of people waiting in line.
There were a lot of tourists there too!
As expected, the Naruto chicken set meal came with a fried chicken halves.
The freshly fried chicken halves had just the right amount of saltiness,
and were crispy on the outside and soft and juicy on the inside.
They also went well with beer.
They sold frozen zangi and fried rice in front of the shop, so we bought some as souvenirs.

On this trip, I will be taking a ferry from Otaru. I wanted to have an early dinner in Otaru before I boarded the ferry, so I decided to go to Naruto, which is famous for its fried chicken.
Naruto's main store is near JR Otaru Station, but when I learned that Naruto's Tsukiko store was located in Wing Bay Otaru near the ferry terminal, I decided to try it there.
My wife and I ordered a 'young chicken set meal' and a 'zangi set meal.' The reputed fried chicken tasted the same as the main shop, crispy and delicious. The Zangi was as good as I had imagined and I enjoyed the taste comparison because I had half with my wife.

The signature half fried chicken is crispy and light, arguably one of the best fried chicken I had. The chicken meat has a tinge of salt taste making it flavourful with every bite. The sushi and sashimi (ikura, tuna and sea urchin) were pretty decent too.

The fee is payable in advance. I sit down and look at the menu table, then go to the cashier, place an order, pay, go back and wait at my seat. When you add, you pay as you do each time. Foreign tourists seemed to have a different style, perhaps coming on a pack tour. I think it is safe to make a reservation because it is a popular restaurant.
The menu is also famous for its half-fried chicken, but the sushi and zangi are also delicious, and the young chicken and sushi set are popular, making it a Japanese-style family restaurant and izakaya where anything is possible. It's complete with Sapporo classic in a solidly seasoned chicken dish.
Access is close to JR Otaru Station, free parking is available, but the capacity is small, and pay parking is scattered around the neighborhood.

We had the original half-fried soul food bird of Otaru. The skin is hot and crisp and delicious. For those of you who got tired of the set meal of white rice, even the chicken bowl of soboro was pretty good.

Found this place via online reviews. There was about 15 groups in front of us but the wait was fast, less than half hour. Actually they have many tables available upstairs just that no one is clearing the tables
We ordered zangi, karaage, unagi, salad, grilled pork, beer and baked crab. They are famous for zangi and karaage. Chicken is still juicy despite having been deep fried. Karaage was too salty. Not a must eat for me

We went because of the social media hype on this place and well it did not live up to the expectations. It’s not bad but it’s absolutely nothing special, simply deep fried chicken. Is it a must try? Definitely not.
PS: it’s super salty. I was super thirsty for the rest of the day.

Tried half chicken and fried chicken parts. Prefer half chicken. Both are tasty but salty.
Most of the staff are coughing badly when we visited

The fried chicken was good. The chicken neck and tail was also good. Other than that, we ordered some sashimi too. Overall the price was worth it.

Arguably the best tasting ZANGI/FRIED CHICKEN of Otaru City in the whole of Hokkaido. The minute you start to eat the chicken, the more you crave for it. Prices are reasonably affordable to the budget. Location can be easily accessible by public transportation. The place is clean with friendly staff. A must try if you visit Otaru. You will never regret trying this SUPER DELICIOUS CHICKEN!
