Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Omg. This store was recommended to us by our guide for sushi making class in Sapporo. So happy he recommended this to us because they have the best fish cakes ever. There also carry lots of souvenirs, some of them specific to Hokkaido.

Big range of fish cakes from sweet, spicy and savoury. And it stayed fresh overnight too as we bought some to eat in our hotel room the next day and it was still delicious. There is also a souvenir shop inside with a big range of gifts and other Hokkaido specialities.

There is a factory attached to the shop, so you can take out freshly fried kamaboko and eat it in. They also have hamburgers, so there is a variety of options to enjoy. They also sell souvenirs. There is also a restaurant called Cabin Kamaei in the building next door, so you can have lunch there too.

I visited the store after 2pm on a holiday, but it was full of tourists. There was a line at the souvenir kamaboko section. Instead of kamaboko, I bought a bread roll that you can take out from the cafe. They also sold Japanese hot dogs and shrimp cutlet burgers. I ate it with a Pilsner of Otaru Beer outside the store. The combination of the softness of the fish paste and the crispness of the fried bread was very delicious.

Very fresh fish cakes with amazing, different fillings. Help yourself to free flow hot tea when you eat-in. You can view their kitchen and watch how they prepare. Many locals bought frozen ones to bring home.

Enjoyed the fish cake before heading to Waraku for sushi. The items sell out fast so make sure you head there before noon to try them all.

Nice place with a shop and a self-service food court serving the freshly made fishcakes. You can even watch them make the fishcakes through a window!

We visited the canal and had out lunch in that area. Took a slow walk along Sakamachi in the snow and cold. Took a pitstop here as the kids were freezing. The fish cake was delicious and had a beer while we warmed up for the second half down the street to LeTAO and Music box museum.

We walked from Otaru station along canal heading towards Minami-Otaru station, Kamaei is along the way. Great place for rest stop even if you don't buy anything. Their specialties are fish cakes of all kinds, but they also have other stuff. Free hot/cold water/tea and fish cake samples. Clean toilets, a must stop in Otaru.

Popular Tourist Spot where for a few dollars you can have a good meal. Otaru’s Stroller’s Bus stops right in front of Kamaei where you can sit down and eat what you have purchased.

Try the fish cake here indeed very tasty. Try the bread roll (bread with surimi (the fish paste used to make kamaboko).

I am a fish-cake lover, so whenever I visit Japan, I would look for places the sell fish-cakes. Kamaei is the most famous fish cake place in Otaru, and the fishcake they have is quite delicious, but a bit too sweet to my liking. Nevertheless, they have very wide selection of fishcakes and the price was quite reasonable. Great place to drop by if you have time.

The original fish cake tastes a but sweet. I also tried the one with mayonnaise, this one taste better than the original one. They have green tea and oolong tea free flow.

This is where Hokkaido’s famous sweet fish cakes “Kamaei Kamaboko” (かま栄) are from. The shopfront is kinda like a mini supermarket. One side is selling fried fish cakes, with many different flavors. The queue is long. I tried 3 types and they were all delicious! Next to it sells all the refrigerated products, like chilled fish cakes and other food items. Then there is also the souvenir section selling interesting stuff from Hokkaido. Behind the shopfront is the fish cake factory. Great to drop by if you have time.
