Stopped in after visiting the Matsumoto castle. What a treat! Delicious soba- we both chose a hot version. The broth was so incredibly tasty we ate it all.

We thoroughly enjoyed our introduction to soba at this great restaurant. The welcome was warm and friendly, service excellent and we were delighted to find some vegan options on the menu, which were delicious!
We were looking forward to dinner at Kobayashi Soba and it didn't disappoint! We went after hiking in Kamikochi and it was the perfect end to the day. The restaurant was warm and inviting, the host was incredibly gracious and kind, and the food was...delicious. We went with friends who are fairly strict vegetarians and they were thrilled to find a place where they had plenty of options on the menu. Highly recommend the sake tasting menu too!More
Lovely host who spoke wonderful English. Got the basashi (raw horse meat) and the veggie and shrimp cold soba. Along with the sake flights. Very delicious. I went on a Saturday night at 6 and no one was there.
Decided to come here for lunch after our visit to the Mastumoto Castle as the review looks good on Tripadvisor. We were greeted warmly and brought over to our seat politely. The soba comes in both hot and cold version and we ordered the cold...soba set with Tempura. We were then served with a very nice buckwheat tea and a plate of condiments with fresh wasabi that we can grate ourself. It was an interesting experiece as I've never tried fresh wasabi before. Fresh wasabi did not have the pungent taste and is very different from the usual ones we eat with sushi. The serving portion is big for the set. Soba noodles were firm, tempura were nicely fried and taste good with the dipping sauce. After we've finish the soba, they served the water used to boil the soba and explain that we should mix with the dipping sauce and drink it. Overall, we've enjoyed the meal here.More
Roasted buckwheat tea on arrival. We ordered the mountain vegetable tempura and Inari soba noodle soup. Food was delicious. Would definitely go again.
We were at Matsumoto to visit the castle and had lunch at this lovely place. Their soba texture is just right and the portion is generous. Duck soba soup is delicious as well as their buckwheat roast tea. We were lucky to get a table...for our family of 8 without reservation but the restaurant was very full on a weekday lunch in mid Jan, so would recommend to make reservation ahead to avoid disappointment. Highly recommended for soba lovers!More
My husband and I visited this place for an early dinner/late lunch. Quiet place within the lovely grounds of a temple. The soba was delicious and what was more interesting was the green tea salt for the tempura. The service was amazing!
Everything about our dinner was so enjoyable. Lovely room, set in a shrine's gardens. Great, friendly service. Tasty food, well presented. Very nice sample of 6 sakes too! Lovely complementary chestnut puree for dessert - and free teabags as we loved their buckwheat tea. Great...dining experience.More
We've had one of our best soba here at Kobayashi. The portions are huge and the tempura is nicely fried too. Enjoyed the dining experience, and lady boss was also nice and friendly. She gave us a small token of their teabags, which we also...loved for its fragrant flavor. Thanks for the meal.More
The restaurant vibe, staff, service and food definitely did not disappoint. I got myself the tempura vegetables/shrimp with cold soba noodles and dipping sauce. The tempura was light and crispy and the soba noodles were great. I really liked that complementary tea was served with...the meal, fresh wasabi was provided so you can grate it yourself (pre-grated was also provided) and after the meal the water from the soba noodles were served as a soup. The exterior of the restaurant was also very nice and Yohashira Shrine is next door.More
Just had a great meal here tonight, probably the best of our stay in Japan. We all had starters, which were exquisitely presented and had taste to match (Rainbow Trout the standout). All had hot Soba of some sort and it was fabulous. We were...treated very well and the host’s English was good enough to see us through. We even got complimentary sake shots and handmade ice cream, plus some buckwheat tea bags to take home. Awesome experience not to be missed!More
Lovely location for a quiet dinner. Really friendly team and great food. Had the tempura soba which was great
We came after a long day hiking through the Kiso valley. The food was very tasty. We had the duck soup and a variety of tempura and a very good sake there. We were sorry we hadn’t hade the chance to slip into a nicer...clothing as the restaurant feel more as a night out. The staff were very friendly and spoke pretty good English and cause they didn’t had the desert we wanted, gave us a desert on the house. A good experience!!!More
