Multiple friends, one of whom from China, told me that this was the best restaurant for Chinese cuisine in downtown Ann Arbor. What the heck, then? The prices were cheap, but the environment of the restaurant was much more elegant than what I would normally see in such a food joint. Then I ate the food. There was that familiar... More

The food was not particularly good or perhaps the chef has been catering too much to the American taste for chow mein and spring rolls. I have been to Hong Kong , Vancouver and the best restaurants in the Monterey Park area in Los Angeles and this restaurant does not come anywhere close to these restaurants or even decent restaurants... China Gate has the best fried cheese rangoons and Kung Pao chicken. This place is consistently great. In all the years we've been coming, literally dozens of times, only one time did the food disappoint when we had a large group. Typically everything is delicious, flavorful, and the portion sizes are pretty big. I love the Kung pao but there... More

Whether this food is good or not depends entirely on your expectations. If you have lived in China or Taiwan you will probably be disappointed in how heavy and salty this food is. There's nothing delicate about it. The fired rice was chocolate brown in color, and it was too salty. The cashew chicken was swimming in brown sauce that... More

We ate here for lunch again before a Michigan football game. The almond chicken is delicious. The restaurant was not busy, and we enjoyed excellent wait service. I love eating here and the food is always excellent. The restaurant is small but worth the wait if you should be here during the busy hours. The lunch special is perfect. The... More

Centrally located in downtown Ann Arbor right off the University of Michigan campus, this Chinese restaurant is popular -- and for good reason. The food is fresh and well-seasoned; it's definitely a significant step up from your standard over-Americanized Chinese fare. This is one of our son's favorite restaurants, and when we're in town visiting we make sure to stop... More

I haven't eaten any other dish here, than the Vietnamese Beef Pho. The reason being it's hands down the best I ever had. I've eaten Pho from Saigon, to Danang, to Hanoi and Haiphong and this is the best I've ever eaten. I live here in Ann Arbor and never get past the Pho to the other dishes.

This is our go-to Chinese choice. No, it's not fancy, no booze, a bit shabby, but we always get fast, friendly service. We've never been disappointed with the hot and sour soup. I tried a "new" dish - tofu stuffed with shrimp, and really enjoyed it. I've had similar dim sum, but this was a generous portion orf 8 large... More

Ordered takeout during our visit with friends who live there. We're big Chinese/Thai food fans and looked forward to what Ann Arbor had to offer. We only hope this isn't typical Asian fare. Hot and Sour Soup was semi-cold, not at all tasty. Beef with scallions was super plain, very gooey, no taste at all. How do you screw up... More
