Stopped here after a walk in the colourful streets in the Balat neighbourhood. Absolutely adored the walnut and wig cake that we ate here, in fact, created my own version! Recipe here: http://kays-kitchen.co.uk/2014/10/13/fig-walnut-cake/ Coffee was superb too. A little bit of a language barrier but definitely worth a visit. I've written about the best (and worst) places to go, things... More

While walking along the picturesque streets of Balat, make a stop at Afilli Cezve for a Turkish Coffee! They offer a great service in a cozy atmosphere (weather permitting, choose to seat outside, otherwise enjoy the confort of the first floor).

A break before starting to visit Barat neighborhood. Me and my sister ordered turkish tea and it was served so nicely! The cups were made in good quality porcelain (different from what you see everywhere), as the tea was. They offered us also some very good typical biscuits. All for a very modest price. Going to the bathroom, upstairs, I... More

We stumbled upon this place and are happy we did. It's near a busy street but fronts onto a small side street. We had a little table on the front patio. There is a spacious upstairs. They don't have a lot of facilities but we had an excellent brownie, decent Turkish omelette and good coffee. The staff were exceptionally helpful... More

This is a great place to stop for a espresso or lemonade if you're sightseeing in Istanbul's old Balat neighborhood. A relaxing, no pressure atmosphere and WIFI.

Thank J P

Staying in Fener & Balat

Neighbourhood Profile
Fener & Balat
This sleepy and rather socially conservative area of Istanbul hosts a small but thriving Jewish community, the patriarchate of the Eastern Orthodox Church, and some of the most beautiful churches and Christian art in the world. Much of what’s most interesting to witness in Fener and Balat sits between the surviving ancient city walls of Constantinople and the serene shores of the Golden Horn. Despite the many splendid sights, historic attractions, stunning vistas, and warm Turkish welcome, the area remains largely unperturbed by the tourist trade that characterizes the atmosphere in nearby Sultanahmet and around the Grand Bazaar. Travelers that like to explore off the beaten track will reap big rewards for making the effort to visit this low-key part of town.
