Was at a convention next door at Prairie Meadows. Was a great location and read multiple reviews that praised this restaurant. Decided to try this location. Big mistake. (The hotel had a big buffet with many food choices that i tried later wonderful). Big Steer is an old restaurant and an even OLDER designed restaurant. Dining rooms are in multiple... More

Wonderful prime rib! Very traditional steakhouse. Love the cowboy decorating. I am an old cowboy, I appreciate everything in there is real. And the way a farmer would expect to get a good steak. So tender, cooked expertly! Nice sides to go with it.

Hi, Eileen. Thank-you for your review. We appreciate "old cowboys." They know the difference between a REAL STEAKHOUSE and a "restaurant" that just hangs up pictures of cattle and calls itself a "steakhouse." It's like someone putting on a cowboy hat and a pair of boots and thinking they are a cowboy. Our hat might not be brand new and... More

This is an old school, traditional steakhouse. With the best corn fed beef I have ever tasted. Perfectly cooked! We stopped there for dinner and will be certain to return! everything was perfect: the warm loaf of bread, candied apple, horseradish, potato choices, cold crisp salad and extensive ice cream drink menu. The service was over the top! Steer this... More

The steak at this restaurant is to die for. I ordered the 2 for 22 steak carry out special and was pleasantly surprised at the service and wealth of food. The steak is melt in your mouth, potatoes are cooked perfectly, and the homemade dressing is fantastic. Take advantage of this eat in your room delight on your next visit.

My wife and I just ate there this evening and it was not the first time. It would remind some one of the older style Des Moines resturants. I feel it has a nice atmosphere and I really like their food. I had their filet and lobster and my wife had a chicken salad and really good crabcakes. We really... More

I had the bone in New York strip and it was as good a cut of meat as I've had at the big-name steak houses. For the money give me the Big Steer anytime.

Several of us decided to surprise a family member for his birthday and take him to the Big Steer as we had heard that it was one of the best places in Iowa for steak. First of all, it was difficult because they do not take reservations. They did say we could call ahead which we decided to do. It... More

We arrived early and were seated right away. The service was attentive and the food was excellent. Our party all had prime rib. The hash browns were crispy outside and soft inside, the steak was tender and perfect. The price was just right for the quality and service.
