When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

My wife and I were in Washington, D.C. on business. I was looking for a Caribbean restaurant so I could surprise my wife. I found Sunrise Caribbean Restaurant on Yelp and it came highly recommended. I hired a lift and didn’t tell her where we...were going. When we arrived, she was so surprised, just seeing the smile on her face melted my heart. We ordered two chicken rotis, two aloo pies, and a slice of black cake. We spent $59.19 and were eager to go back to our hotel, to taste the food. Let me say, I spend two months in India, and I am married to a Trinidad woman who cooks curry all the time because love everything curry so I speak from experience. The food was horrible, horrible, horrible. First, bite, the roti lacked curry and authentic flavors. Additionally, the potato pieces in the roti were too big. Second, the aloo pies were full of tasteless filling. Third, the black cake was dry, tasteless, and lacking alcohol. The food was inedible, we ended up throwing it in the trash. What a waste of $50.19More

1-The chef and team were warm and welcoming. 2-The complimentary corn soup with dumplings reminded me of my grandma’s kitchen in Trinidad. 3-The shrimp Dalpuri roti and pineapple with ginger drink were so tasty. 4-The doubles tasted like the ones I ate in Trinidad. Love...the place, love the food, love the warm welcoming Caribbean Hospitality.More

This place was horrible! I live in Europe and whenever I return to the US, I like to get oxtails. So when I met up with my best friend in DC on 20July 2021, we decided to give this place a try. The husband owner...served my food and his customer service skills were severely lacking. I said I would like to order the oxtails to which he didn’t not reply but just stood and looked at me. So I thought maybe he didn’t hear me so I repeated my order. The husband replied very rudely “you just want oxtails and how do I know what else”. As a first time customer I was not aware that I should inform him of the sides first and then the meats. Excusing his rudeness I proceeded to place my order. I ordered 2 oxtails platters, a platter containing sides, a beef patty, and drinks. We spent $77.00 which would have been fine had the service or at least the food been worth it. My best friend wanted plantains but I didn’t see any. However there was an empty space that look like it was going to be filled so I asked if they had any plantains. Rather than answer my question, the husband gestured with his hand at the selection. I asked him if his gesture meant no? And he replied with you see is what we have. On the other hand the wife who seemed to be really nice saw the exchange and apologized that they were making them but they were not ready yet. I told her thank you. I never do reviews but because the service was horrible the food was oily and tasteless and the cost was not justified, I felt like I needed to inform others of this experience. Not recommended!More

Used to love this place but not anymore. Because of COVID, everything is to-go so I requested that I get my chicken in a separate container so the juices from the sides wouldn’t get my other food soggy. They refused for no reason even though...I agreed to pay for the extra container. Also, they’re not consistent with their Hours and don’t care at all.More

Last time I picked up food there they gave me the wrong item and besides the spice the food is B LAND, mac n' cheese is TERRIBLE. Patties are mediocre. I hate when i order food to go and when I get home I don't...have what I asked for. Will not be back.More

We went on a Saturday afternoon. It’s a small place. About 5 tables. It wasn’t busy and we gave our orders as soon as we walked in. It’s Caribbean fare; oxtail, curried goat along fish, vegan and vegetarian options. Similar to cafeteria style with some...options to special order. I ordered the escovitch red snapper, spinach and collard greens (vegetarian). I was disappointed to see the fish was not made to order, was already prepared and sitting under a heater lamp. The food was decent but not the best. I was also disappointed by the indifference of the cashier/server. He appeared distracted and was not very engaging. It may have just been an off day. I may try them again some other time.More

The food is hot and ready. We had Stew Chicken Rice/Peas and Callaloo, Oxtails, Mac&Cheese with Cabbage. And definitely grabbed some Roti! All was yummy and the owners are family oriented and very nice.

Due to Hurricane Irma, we were not able to get to Fort Lauderdale from our Washington DC leg of our USA vacation. This meant we had to have our Caribbean food top up in Washington DC. This restaurant had good reviews and fortunately a friend...of ours from Washington uses this outlet frequently and recommended it. As we were staying in Arlington, the journey there entailed a trip on the Yellow Line to Mount Vernon Square (MVS), Green Line to George Ave Petworth (The Yellow would take you to George Ave Petworth, however, services terminates at MVS at 15:00) then either 70 or 79- express- bus to the restaurant location. The journey took around 45 minutes. The restaurant location appears to be in a reasonably safe area and close to bus stops and parking. Compared to some joints I've frequented, it was reasonably presented inside and the staff were friendly. My first but not unexpected disappointment was that pork was not on the menu, I'm told that this is to be expected in Washington DC. Secondly, my choice of curry goat was not available and when choosing from their soup menu was told they don't do soup on that day. Why cannot that be advertised somewhere. The jerk chicken was too hot for my wife- but to my taste- and I ended up with the Oxtail which together with any two sides, I found rather pricey at $18 although the portions of my two sides, plantains and chick peas were decent. Having said that, the food was quite tasty and the take away portions were large enough to provide each of us with two meals. If I was ever in Washington DC again, I would definitely visit this outfit again.More

I go to Sunrise a few times a momth. You can either dine in as they have tables or have your food to go. It has the best West Indian food in DC. Having lived in DC all my life, previously we had to either...go to Queens/Brooklyn for authentic Guyanese food. Sunrise is Trinidadian owned. They have bake and salt fish, Jamaican beef patty, sorrel, roti, dhal puri, pholourie, rice and peas, curry chicken. As well, they offer vegan and vegetarian dishes. The staff is patient, welcoming and friendly. Definitely a great asset to the DC area.More

The portions were massive! The Stewed Brown Chicken and Curry Goat was tender and delicious. The rice and beans, cabbage and kale were delightful. We were traveling with a child that doesn't usually eat veggies, and she finished the kale! There were veggies in the...mac and cheese, but the kids thought this was a plus. The had Sorrel ( which I didn't get, but I was so tempted)! The owners and workers are Trinidadians-so I knew that their bake would have been outstanding. We happened to find one of the workers at the Union Station selling food from a kiosk, but he was out of food (not surprising) at the end of the day, and suggested that we come to the restaurant. We were not disappointed. Thankfully pleasant staff was attentive and welcoming to we out of towners. My father visits DC frequently and I will definitely recommend this place. I am willing to bet money on the vegetarian options being on point- they looked so appetizing.More
