This place was a pleasant, midrange Ethiopian restaurant. It had all the usual... wall decorations, etc. The wait staff was pleasant, if perhaps a bit uninspired. The food, however, was just a bit "blah." That is, it simply wasn't exciting in any way. Too bad. Try Ababa one block away, where we ate later, and it was amazingly different. So,... More

Our friend who is a resident of DC proclaimed that we cannot leave DC without eating Ethiopian food. We walked for what seemed like hours but he could not find the one he had in mind so we ended up popping into this one. I enjoyed the food but everything was very basic. It was my first time eating Ethiopian... More

We like to try different restaurants and aren't really off put by less than favorable decor. So when we walked into this place, with it's 8 televisions blaring football in the restaurant and super scruffy interior, we thought, oh, okay, rustic. The service was great. The food was edible. It was not very tasty - very bland. But the real... More

For all I know the food and service are great at Awash. Certainly the reviews have been good enough that I went to some trouble to head there for lunch one Saturday recently. Unfortunately, although the place indicated that it opened at 11:00, it was not open at 11:00, or 11:30, and no one answered the phone when we called... More

We were actually looking for another Ethiopian restaurant in the area, but found out it has been closed for years. Apparently TripAdvisor does not update such things. Anyway, because we were bent on having Ethiopian cuisine that evening we walked into Awash restaurant. Right away we could see that it was more like a bar with many TVs on the... More

Waiter didn't speak good English but we worked it out. It was nice having an authentic Ethiopian Tej (honey wine) too. Of course, the food was stellar and prices reasonable. Will come again.

Awash is a nice little restaurant with a dive-bar feel to it. Don't expect a squeaky-clean decor, but the ambiance is personable and the food is great. My husband and I live in the area and used to go often. We'd usually order 1 order of awaze tibs (lamb) and a vegetarian platter, which comes to a little over $30.... More

A suggestion from a friend brought me here. And this is to share the suggestion: give credit to the pace. The food is simple, and good. Eat with your hands using the flat bread as a spoon, and you will be happier. Do not forget to sample the African beer.

I have to say I was a somewhat skeptical at first. The place looks a little run down. It was kind of empty except for a few fellows who looked like they were regulars there. Later in the evening I think some guys were smoking hookah. We ordered some tea, veggie platter, a lamb dish and some beers. Everything was... More

I love Ethiopian cuisine a lot and this place serves fresh and authentic tasting food. If you really want to taste a home made Ethiopian food then this is the place to go.
