This restaurant is located @ Union Market. We were leary to go in because we aren't from DC and didn't know what kind of atmosphere this restaurant would have, or if we would even be welcome. We were AMAZED at how friendly the staff was, how awesome the decor was and the speed of the food coming out was on point! They served us on cute dishes from 1776 and my kids enjoyed watching the cooks make our food. It was on the mid-range for price, the steak my husband got was $28, and worth.every.penny. My kids are disappointed at every other restaurant now lol! I was mad I couldn't finish my food, it was THAT good! Definitely worth a stop on your trip!!!

This was our first time to St. Anselm. We had 7pm reservations for a birthday dinner. The restaurant was packed and loud - with a great vibe. Our table was not yet ready and the staff was SO apologetic. We had to wait about 10-15 minutes for our table but a manager came by with prosecco for all of us while we waited. Soon enough we were seated and an unbelievable night unfolded. Our server was Austin who was super professional and knowledgeable. We were wondering about the Orange wine, and the sommelier overheard us. She came over and was unbelievably friendly, knowledgeable and nice. Austin then brought us complimentary buttermilk buscuits with pimento cheese to again apologize for the delayed seating. We feasted on venison chop, butchers steak and NY Strip. Pan fried mashed potatoes, wild mushrooms and grilled carrots were great accompaniments. The wine list was extensive and impressive. We ordered one piece of carrot cake to share for desert and it arrived with a birthday candle. They must have overheard us talking about our birthday. I would recommend St. Anselm and Austin to anyone looking for a gourmet meal with a wide range of entrees, quirky decor and a fun time.

Although this restaurant was recommended by a friends son and therefore catered to a demographic younger than me, the noise level was bearable. The food was flawless. I asked my tuna to be cooked through, something I know chefs hate to do, and it was the exact perfect amount of being cooked, Service was also great; every time I took a sip of water, someone was there to refill it, yet remained unobtrusive. I'd return here every trip to DC

Beautiful room, excellent service. Food is hit or miss. Pimento cheese biscuits: amazing. Steaks and entrees, however, came out overseasoned and overcooked; would not classify this as a top notch dining destination. Not sure if there've been changes in the kitchen since it received such glowing reviews a year ago. Think of this place as somewhere you'd want to go for a happy hour and a couple of snacks rather than a nice dinner, which certainly doesn't warrant the price tag. We were excited to try after reading reviews but everyone left kind of underwhelmed.

I really like the vibe of this restaurant and also the set up. We ordered the deviled eggs and the beef tartare for appetizers, the cauliflower and steak for entrees and everything was amazing. For dessert we had the sweet potato pie which was also very delicious. Our waitress was very attentive and someone came regularly to refill our waters. I did notice that it was pretty cold in there and it seems as if the AC might have been on (why in the winter?) I saw how the flags above the bar were moving due to the blow of the vents. If indeed that was warm air maybe close those went and direct them toward the patrons? I was pretty uncomfortable due to the temperature in there but otherwise everything was fine!

We had brunch at St Anselm today and we were very impressed by the excellent management of the COVID-19 pandemic: temperature check, contact tracing for all guest, and plenty of space between the outdoor tables. If all restaurants and other businesses would follow similar disciplined approaches, we would be in a much better health situation. And food was delicious. Their buttermilk biscuits are to die for and no wonder every single table ordered them!

On vacation, my friend and I dined here on a Monday night at 7:15. When we arrived, the place was filled with diners both inside and out. The host greeted us and sat us at a table directly under the air conditioning vent, we ask to change tables and they were very accommodating. The atmosphere was like an old fashion, tavern steak house with quirky decor elements like the different plates. Stephen was our server, excellent, very friendly, informative and attentive. We ordered cocktails while perusing the menu. When on vacation and trying new places, my friend and I like to share so we can try all the different dishes. We started off with the Beef Tartare with the Calabrian Chilis and the Endive Salad with Walnuts, Smoked Blue Cheese, Anchovy Vinaigrette. For the main dish we ordered the Salmon Collar with lemon, garlic butter and the Prime 16 oz. Ribeye. The tartare and salad were delivered first, both tasting great. The salmon and steak came next, salmon cooked perfectly and steak to our medium rare request, again, both tasting great! So glad I was able to get reservations as they only book out a week at a time... it was well worth it! Atmosphere: fun lively tavern feel. Service: excellent. Food: very good

Not all steak places are created equal. When St. Anselm came to DC it brought new life to an old reliable genre. The menu is creative, innovative and not just for meat eaters. My favorite steak house in DC (as well as NYC). Its Union market location is off the beaten path and the prices are definitely high end but well worth the trek from downtown DC. The crowd is more than just suit and ties and reflects the changing demographic of the DMV area. Great for dinner, weekend brunch or for the lively bar scene. The service is professional and just eclectic enough to make it a fun experience. At its core, St Anselm is all about the steaks. Whether the 50 ounce ribeyes or the smaller flat iron or skirt steaks are all worth trying. We'll have to come back to try the lamb or the pork but the steaks are always too good to pass up

This was my first visit to this restaurant. The food was delicious, I had the salmon collar, and the rest of the party had steaks. These were cooked to perfection and tasty. The portions were huge, we had sides of corn and broccoli, and the corn on the cob was the tastiest I have had in years. But what impressed me the most was the knowledge of the wine waitron, as she was able to give a full description of the wine choices without having to refer to anything. The serving waitron was attentive, and we lacked nothing, so we could enjoy a special meal out.

Incredible local steak house in the amazing NOMA. Must go for steak lovers and foodies. Make sure to have the biscuits and start off with the Planters Punch. Portions are great size to share. So much on the menu that one wants to eat it is wonderful to share

Oh - those biscuits!! The steak & eggs were fantastic too, but don’t forget to order the biscuits. I wasn’t a fan of the giant hash brown that is served with most of the breakfast dishes, but the biscuits make up for that. The place is beautiful inside and the service was great...I’ll be back soon!

To put it in perspective, we had one appetizer, one salad, one cocktail each, and one bottle of the “value” wine and dinner was $650 for three people. The food was excellent. We had ribeye steaks and skirt steaks. The sommelier was fabulous. It was a warm, eclectic and fun space. I have two complaints. First, we wanted to order a cocktail and an appetizer while we decided on our mains, but they wouldn’t take our order unless we gave the complete order with a promise that they would course the meals appropriately. However, they brought the main courses before we even had a chance to finish our cocktails. It was a Monday night. We definitely felt rushed to eat but weren’t rushed after the meal. My other complaint is the ridiculously crappy steak knives which were completely out of whack with the food, atmosphere and price.

We dined at the restaurant while visiting family in DC. This was our second visit and we were as pleased as on our first. We ordered a lot of food - biscuits & pimento, blue crab deviled eggs, heritage bacon, branzino, skate wing, lamb leg steak, smashed potatoes, spinach and mushrooms. Everything was delicious. The branzino came as a large whole fish but it was de-boned and easy to eat. It could have fed two of us. The skate wing was light and tasty and the lamb very good. The blue crab deviled eggs and biscuits were the best. Although expensive for our Midwest tastes the meal was worth it to share with family.

We chose St Anselm's for a special occasion. The atmosphere was perfect with not too much noise, and the service staff was most attentive, bringing us our menu choices. The food was well cooked and presented and delicious to taste. I would recommend it for special occasions, not a regular family meal.
