As two locals who stumbled upon our first choice being closed for a private evening, we went around the town to search for somewhere interesting, not too fancy, not too casual to eat. Lāsīte does deliver here. The service was very attentive and lovely, and the ambience was great, with candlelight in an authentic medieval room. There was a range... More

During our walking tour of the old town we came across this restaurant …I think the words hot cocktails may be caught our attention. My companion had a hot cocktail with main ingredient being Riga’s local drink …Black Balsam. I had a mug of hot dark ale …both were delicious. We both then had the pumpkin soup …which was so... this restaurant is a bit hidden and you may easily miss it. We went after the recommendation of our guide and were not disappointed. While the actual restaurant is not as good as the other one in Riga, the food is highly superior in quality and taste. The restaurant itself is simple, underground with some Middle Ages theme to it.... More

I went down a path and found this interesting place. I see from the previous reviews that people seem to like this place, however this was not my experience. I opened the door to the restaurant and a young girl was behind the bar, the place had just opened so we were the first ones in the place. The girl... More

After a days travelling we found this place, just as it was winding down. The main menu was too late, but they put together a selection of nibbles/starters. The beer was excellent, if not a bit lively. Measured in a glass then decanted into a mug, via a froth remover. We ate there ie full meal, twice. I wanted to... More

Surprising medieval environment tucked behind the Anglican church. Feels like a secret passage that leads to the entrance. Reasonably priced drinks and appetizers (we didnt have a meal.). Service was attentive and fairly quick. Live classical guitar in the background added to the ambience. Upon departure the waiter chased down our party after someone lost their pocket contents on the... More

Lasite is tucked away down a side-street and whilst the orange-clad chap (a cross between a Buddhist monk and a medieval knight) attempting to draw in customers might be enough to deter you, don't let it. Inside is rustic and whilst a few of the decorative touches may not ring quite true, everything else feels authentic without seeming contrived. The... More

Absolutely, from far, one of the best places I' ve seen in my travels. The setting is stunning, in the same place since 1300s. They made a big effort to restore but keep the same design and furniture. The house wine was perfect and the simple, medieval foods were served in stone and ceramic dishes. I enjoyed so much the... Description
LASITE is running its 43st season!
LASITE is a legendary place since 1975 ... In older – Soviet period this wasn’t only a very popular Old Town cafe, but also, as common for those times, one of the most inaccessible places in Riga...
Looking back even further in history, everything started in 1454, when at the same time with the ancient fortifications of Riga, here appears Blind street (Akla iela), where on the ground floor, beneath the ancient cross vaults, LASITE is located. Architect Silvija Petersone, in 1975, designing the cafe, tried to keep the old building and its medieval spirit as much as possible. Restored stained-glass appeared in the windows, the wolf and peccary skin were attached to the walls, massive medieval-style furniture placed in hall.
And yet ... people say, that in Soviet times LASITE has been the place where the Latvian SSR senior management, with Augusts Voss (Latvian communist leader in 70th/80th years XX century) himself forefront after freezing in the Komsomol Quay podium, has come "to warm up" with cognac and continued to celebrate the October holidays and other communist celebrations.
Stepping by in to LASITE, anyone enters a peculiar mix of atmosphere, where the old Livonian atmosphere mingles with the nostalgic seventies and eighties of the last century. For many centuries, these facilities have experienced a variety of events; there have been both luxurious feasts, both bloody and dramatic love drama, witnessed by a ghost (or ghosts) seen by many LASITE employees.
In addition to the traditional range of a modern restaurant, we offer LASITE visitors Livonia (XV-XVI century) time dishes, which are served in the authentic clay dishes. Visitors are able to get nostalgic Soviet-era cocktails.
Every night is live music. Often in LASITE performs Girts Pavenis (guitar, piano, mandolin) with popular music and early music performer Einars Kvilis (banjo, flute, mandolin, lute, guitar), as well as other artists.
Especially welcome are all those to whom LASITE at different times has been a welcoming and lovely place.
