I read about that place before my trip to Budapest. Had great hopes for local food in good price. Food was very average. Very rude thing is that a water and bread on the table is not free, they should inform about it. So in the end, while paying a bill you will be asked if you ate any bread... More

Kadar is a quite unique eating experience, in many ways. Authentic it certainly is; the cafe itself is a kind of time piece. Vintage seating, wall photos etc, old school food and service. No alcohol or coffee on offer. A kind of Hungarian Fawlty Towers maybe. When paying your bill, you will be asked how many glasses of water and... More

Unpretentious setting full of memorabilia, wood panels, photographs and checked tablecloths; you can go back in time at Kadar. The waitresses are very welcoming from the moment you arrive. They come by the table and explain the menu in English and recommend some classic dishes. Their English is more or less limited to the menu, but it is also written... More

If you want to live a real traditional hungarian experience, then this is the place. The things on the wall, the atmosphere, the location - not in a touristic spot - are well worth a visit. Although, the menu is very essential and pretty incomprehensible, the staff (apart from the man at the cashier) does not speak English and the... More

Tried this place today because of the good recommendations. it's not a fancy place at all and the furniture looks a little "used". but you will get really good food for just a few bucks. it also seems like a place where locals lile to eat. we paid about 17€ (plus tip) for 2 soups, 2 main dishes, 2 Softdrinks,... I have been here many times over the years and it was always a pleasure to step back into an old world Hungarian restaurant, but this is likely the last time I will go for lunch at this Budapest institution. There's a great, nostalgic atmosphere of the old Jewish quarter inside, with pics of Hungarian and international celebrities on the... More

I ate lunch here today (they're not open for dinner) overall I really enjoyed it. Food was good classic Hungarian, and I liked the vibe of the place. I'm actually planning on coming back. In a city where it seems rather difficult to find quality food, this place is a welcome change! My only quip is the waitress asking me... More

The place is looks like someone's kitchen and offers very cheap food. If you are looking for the real traditional Hungarian dishes without paying the high prices of vaci utca and its tourist traps, go there! The dishes are good, average meat quality, not high end of course. The lady at the service is motherly unlike any other place in... More

Staying in District VII / Jewish Quarter

Neighbourhood Profile
District VII / Jewish Quarter
District VII is the very heart of Budapest and houses the city’s Jewish Quarter. Its streets are lively and colorful, its buildings narrate different histories in an assortment of architectural styles, and its cafes and bars are frequented and loved by the enthusiastic crowds. Grand and magnificent, the striking star of the district is the Great Synagogue, the largest in Europe and one of the biggest in the world. Distinctly Moorish in style, crowned by the twin onion shaped domes, the Synagogue is the very emblem of District VII and one of the main attractions in the capital.
