Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

A great location in a very historical and traditional building. Pity they are only doing takeaway at the moment.
However, their duck dishes are exceptional! Highly recommended!!

Drive through the elaborate paifang (traditional Chinese gateway) and you’ll find yourself in Chan’s Canton Village. Edged in red neon, the tiled red and green archway gives way to flat-roofed red brick architecture with a row of windows that each boasts an external air conditioner, reminding me of a 1980s motel. Pushing through the front doorway takes you into a vestibule lined with photographs of owner James Chan OAM with a not-insubstantial collection of Australia’s most famous politicians and public figures.
Gathered across forty years of running what was once Western Sydney’s largest Chinese restaurant, the photographic collection spans both sides of the political divide. Spying my interest in the photos of Julia Gillard, Bill Shorten, Kevin Rudd, Gladys Berejiklian, Tony Abbott, and Scott Morrison all on display, Chan asks me, rather astutely, if Julia Gillard is my favourite? When prompted for his favourite in return, Chan volunteers that he liked Kim Beazley the best, because he is “a genuinely nice man”. He adds that all the men who visit his restaurant like Kristina Keneally best, because every morning he has to wipe her photo clean of dirty fingerprints.
Framed by an elaborate wooden archway, the 280-person capacity dining room is a visual delight. While a couple of letters might have gone out in their outdoor sign, there’s nothing faded about the elaborately designed ceilings and painted poles in the gold-heavy interior. Set with white tablecloths, most of the room’s round tables have wooden lazy Susan toppers that so delighted me as a kid. The only thing that’s missing is the chopsticks - Chan’s Canton Village seems to be a fully fork and spoon affair. The transportive effect of the room is heightened with a soundtrack of traditional Chinese music that eventually gives way to classical tracks and a cacophony of bird calls coming from outside.
Taking the cuisine of Hong Kong as its foundation, the Cantonese menu boast a few dishes you don’t find at every Chinese restaurant in Sydney. Four Treasure Soup ($8) should appeal to anyone who grew up eating cream of chicken soup when they were sick or in need of comfort. Rooting around the bottom of the opaque and creamy soup will produce a generous collection of prawns, crab meat and chicken, the variety edging out the silky pork wontons in my dining companion’s simple but enjoyable Short Soup ($7.80).
After a bit of banter with our waiter, who seemed unconvinced that we actually enjoy chilli, we get a generously proportioned Chicken Fritters ($10.80) adaptation (they’re usually presented with sweet and sour sauce). Served for us with fresh chilli, salt and pepper, these fritters win with a potato scallop-like crisp batter exterior, and to be fair to our experienced waiter, a bowl Chan’s house-made chilli sauce that is actually ballistic. Luckily Josef Chromy Pepik Chardonnay ($35/bottle) is reasonably priced, and the right kind of lean and racy Chardonnay to help diminish my chilli-induced duck pout.
Dished up silver service style by our waiter, now sporting an I-told-you-so smile, Chan's Special Fried Rice ($16.80) contains the same well-sized prawns and chicken as the Four Treasure soup, rounded out with green peas and tasty roast pork. We enjoy it with some bigger crustaceans – Chilli King Prawns ($26.80) – that have great, firm bite against your choice of chilli sauce (sweet chilli, or one that actually packs some punch) and slivers of perfectly cooked onion.
Mandarin-style Special Fried Pork Ribs ($20.80) are elaborately flamed at the table inside a silver foil package using a fragrant lemon liqueur. Juggled with two spoons, the piping hot package is then cut open to reveal battered bone-in pork ribs with a sticky citrus-inspired sweet and sour sauce that has hints of burnt marshmallow from its charring.
This was a fun introduction to a suburban Chinese restaurant that makes a casual weeknight dinner feel special.

Nine ladies attended the lunch today - plenty of parking available - the food since last visit in 2016 is still delicious today as it was then - service a little long winded but we were well looked after.

From the outside this restaurant doesn't look like much to rave on about but I can assure you it is!
I've lived in this area for over 20yrs and had never considered coming here for chinese food until I started working at the hotel next door roughly 5 yrs ago. Once I tried it I realised what I had been missing out on all that time! Chans became my go to option for dinner and I constantly recommended the venue to our customers.
Service is great, food is even better. Highly recommend the rainbow steak!

We had dinner there last night to celebrate my daughters birthday, as there was 11 of us they put us on a large table in the corner which was a good position. The food although being a little dear was delicious and all plates were eaten, no doggy bags needed. This place does karaoke but if you don't like it they don't do it Sunday nights.

We used to live in the area when I was growing up and had been there many times in the 80s. My mother turned 75 recently and wanted to celebrate with the family at a Chinese restaurant, so we decided to forgo our usual local and reminisce at Chan's.
None of us had been there for over 25 years, but it's remarkably still much the same interior. The dancefloor seems smaller and there's karaoke now, rather than just a DJ, but not a lot else has changed.
The food is still superior to most Chinese establishments and all our meals were 'melt in the mouth good'. No complaints at all about what we ate, but there were a few things I didn't like, namely the $25 per person minimum, the appearance of the restaurant from the outside (looks like a demolition zone from the highway) and the karaoke not starting till 9:30pm. Oh, and the fact that a table for eight celebrating an older person's birthday was placed almost directly on the edge of the dancefloor, while there were at least three or four vacant ones in more suitable places.
We asked to be moved after dancing started... the free performance from a neighbouring table of early-teen dance school girls grooving and singing hip hop at the top of their lungs and bashing into our chairs was the final straw.
More communication needed from management to kitchen and wait staff too... I was asked four times within ten minutes, by four different people, when we wanted the birthday cake presented to the table... and this started about two minutes after we'd finished dinner.
The restaurant was virtually deserted by 10pm, after a half hour of nobody helping out the karaoke host with a tune at all. She had a pleasant enough voice but the effects were so overdone that you couldn't understand anything she said at all... even when she was making announcements, like my Mum's Happy Birthday. A couple of our group were brave enough to look at the karaoke list and commented that it also mustn't have changed since the 80s... so didn't participate.
We felt compelled to leave shortly after, despite the establishment saying they were open till late. When people start cleaning around you, it's definitely time to go!
In short, food was a little on the exxy side for a local Chinese, but was absolutely delicious! The let-down was the outside appearance, organisation, service and entertainment. We will definitely do the half-hour drive to get takeaway there... the food was that good. But I don't think we'll be visiting to dine in again anytime soon. Maybe in another 25 years?
