We passed by on our first walk around the block back in Mooloolaba. We were just noting the changes to the shops and cafes since we were last here. The poster in the window of Backlane caught our eye " Wednesday Night Date Night $60 for 7 Tapas Plates and a Bottle of Wine". Well this fitted in with our schedule so we took a card from the staff member and promised to return on the night.
Wednesday evening came around and we were happily seated outside on quite a warm night. We were soon joined by 2 other couples of a similar age group (60's-ish or wish we still were!) The wines on offer in the package were a South Australian brand called Grower's Gate. They had 3 Whites, a Rose and 2 Reds to choose from. I chose a bottle of Pinot Grigio and we were well pleased with it. Then the Tapas dishes started coming out with great timing, very nicely paced..
You can see from the menu that there are 5 small plates leading up to a large plate of a terrific Japanese style chicken and rice dish. The meal is concluded with the white chocolate & raspberry curd served in a glass goblet with 2 spoons for you to fight it out with your date. Absolutely no complaints or gripes with each plate very carefully thought through and presented by the chef.
The 2 young waitresses and their manager did a great job of looking after us and everybody else around us. The guitar player/singer was a welcome addition to the atmosphere there as we knew many of the songs he played. Top marks to the team for making the quieter midweek nights more attractive. Be sure to take your date there too.

Happened upon the backlane bar one evening and stopped for a drink. The bar tenders were very helpful and happy, Mark was great especially when we found the cocktail list which is unique to backlane. We had a fun night of drinks with a couple of tapas snacks it was so good we booked for the date night deal dinner on Wednesday night. Amazing value $60 for two includes 7 tapas courses and a bottle of wine all was great thoroughly enjoyed it and of course finished with a couple of cocktails. Great time.

After making a reservation we were running a little late, I called and Shane reassured us that it was ok. We arrived and were greeted by the most lovely waitresses. The food was beyond sensational and on our table so quickly. From amazing three cheese croquettes to melt in your mouth beef cheek. After stuffing ourselves with so much food we managed to squeeze In churro or two just so I could write about how fresh and delicious they were as well. Go visit and wear loose clothing - you won’t regret it

Walking along the esplanade saw a little sign that intrigued me and my friend. We were not disappointed. Shane really looked after us giving us a seat at the front window. The next visit Shane gave us the same table which was fun because we interacted with curious walkers by and they then came in to experience the amazing food and cocktails. Shane’s passion and his personal touch in greeting customers was delightful. He is very creative with cocktails and knowledge on all drinks. The food was to die for and our favourite was the soft shell crab bao...great tapas and the dessert of Churos with the chocolate sauce and vanilla bean ice cream was absolutely delicious. Can’t wait to come back Shane, even if it’s a day trip.. don’t take the soft shell crab off the menu please.

Had a very pleasant evening here the Saturday before Easter. As it was tapas style, the meal was spread out and very relaxed. The food was tasty and fresh and there were $10 cocktails served between 8pm to 9pm so rounded the evening off very nicely. The staff were fantastic - very polite and attentive - a real credit to the restaurant.

We had a group booking for the bottomless prawns and oysters luncheon on the first Saturday of the month.
We were very pleasantly surprised that the oysters were not just all natural as I'd expected, but a variety was on offer including kilpatrick and Japanese.
Prawns of course were Mooloolaba and nice large ones at that.
Don't believe the advertised "bottomless for 2hr package" because after the first couple of share platters replacements do slow down, and by an hour you are pretty much being talked out of having more, but most of us had had sufficient by then, it's just whether or not that applied to all we felt pressured to call it quits on the food. Of course they were still happy for us to buy more drinks, they weren't closing, just felt we'd had a quota?
Like I said, the food was top notch, and the value at $70/head excluding drinks wasn't bad given the quality of food on offer, it just would have been nice to be the people saying "we're all good now thanks, no need for more" rather than feeling pressured to stop eating after about half the advertised food serving time.
Oh and the guy playing the guitar and singing was absolutely excellent!

This little bar down the back of Mooloolaba is a gem. Great wines and cocktails in a chic setting are a draw card in themselves, but the food is divine too.
My husband and I went for dinner and thoroughly enjoyed our whole experience. We shared several dishes and were blown away by the tastes. The salt and pepper calamari was cooked to perfection, crumbed olives stuffed with goats cheese amazing too, followed by lamb kofta and Asian slaw, washed down with a soft Spanish Tempranillo. Plenty to eat at a good price too.
Attentive wait staff made it a very pleasant evening.
Recommended.

Wow wow wow! Combined 101st birthday gathering shifted to Backlane as another high profile local restaurant/bar were going to ignore COVID-19 restrictions. Best decision ever. The staff are friendly. The French Martini’s are delicious and the wine flowed and flowed. I loved the deep fried olives, the calamari was cooked perfectly and my fish taco was excellent. I wished I lived here! Please support this business it is great.

We went for Spanish night which we had been looking forward to. The paella looked impressive when it came to the table, however, it lacked flavour and seasoning, rice was way over cooked and very gluggy and the prawns were over cooked and chalky. Basically none of us ate it. We also ordered a jug of sangria and we all questioned if there was even any alcohol in it. They gave us free churros for dessert but even they were undercooked and doughy. Definitely won’t be back.

We know now why this restaurant is so highly recommended! It’s great!
The service was just right - attentive and efficient without being annoying or over the top.
And the food ..... a great tapas menu which had lots of variety and was reasonably priced. Most of the dishes were larger than expected and five dishes between the two of us was more than enough.
Food and service were both excellent and we enjoyed our visit so much we are going there again tomorrow night.

Spent a Saturday night here for a few shareplates and drinks.
When we ordered the waitress wasn’t sure if they had one of the items and upon ordering the boneless chicken wing skewers with satay and cucumber we were told they didn’t have boneless available.
After ordering 2 cocktails, we were told one of the cocktails had a liqueur that they didn’t have available so we had to select another.
Food came before our drinks.
Duck spring rolls were good
Dumplings were far too salt and underwhelming
Pork belly tacos were dry
Then the chicken wings came out - with bones as we were advised but not with cucumber and satay as advertised. We asked a different waitress what they were. She said they were chipotle flavour and that they have changed the menu. We weren’t told of the new favour when ordering so were really disappointed and didn’t eat them.
The restaurant menus are just A4 bits of paper so you would expect the “new” menu be printed to replace the old
The service was average and I wouldn’t recommend this place with much better options near by.

Funky little bar off the main drag off Mooloolaba. Definitely worst going back from the main block where the location comes with a surcharge. This bar has a nice Melbourne atmosphere to it and takes up a fair bit of real estate for a bar. The tapas has a reasonable variety but is pricey. The pork belly taco was delicious which was a god start. The fish taco was not as great. The fish was luke warm (deliberately) tuna (I think) but the dressing just didn’t match and the whole thing left an unpleasant after taste. The drinks menu was extensive and was probably the highlight. Overall this is a nice change from the usual Sunny Coast restaurants and would be great for a birthday or hanging out with friends.

Had dinner at Backlane with family and we were all very impressed. In fact we went back the following night because the food, cocktails and service were so good. The Tapas meals are fresh and tasty with a good variety of choices. The cocktails are delicious and an experience with some having a bit of theatre by having smoke bubbles etc. All the staff are friendly and helpful and great at their jobs. Our family highly recommends this place.

A group of us had dinner there, and the service and atmosphere was great. The food was delicious, but some tapas was minuscule, while others were a good size. The octopus skewer had only one tiny baby octopus and a little salad! One baby octopus! The fish tacos were also minuscule and you couldn’t even see or taste the fish amongst the salad on the smallest taco I have seen. On the other hand, the spring rolls were huge, the bar buns usual size, so fine, the calamari OK.
