Went to the Italian cottage this evening. We had been wine tasting during the day and wanted something tasty but not too expensive (as most food is in the Hunter Valley) for dinner.
When we walked in, we were greeted by friendly staff and shown to a table. We were very early despite having booked for later in the evening. Place was setup with a clean high chair (bit of a rarity to get a high chair that doesn't need a good wipe down before use) and were given the menu.
I ordered mushroom risotto, and the chef kindly made a smaller portion for my daughter. My wife had a pizza. All three meals were very good. My daughter loved her risotto and mine was also fantastic. I've had a couple recently, which have been watery and in some instances, lacking flavour. Not this one. The pizza was likewise very nice (I know because I finished off what she couldn't eat).
Price was reasonable, especially for the area. All in all, good evening and happy customers.

We are locals and, for some reason, had not been to this restaurant before. We booked and the staff member who greeted us already knew my wife's name. A nice friendly and professional touch. The service was efficient and friendly, and our order taken quickly.
We shared a burrata to start - really good and well presented - and I chose the duck ravioli while my wife chose the fine angel hair pasta with fresh crab meat & cherry tomatoes. Both were delicious, good servings and nicely presented. A rocket salad provided a great foil to the sauces.
We took our own wine, and corkage is at the upper end of $6 per person with a fairly small wine list. My advice is take a really good bottle to justify that corkage as we did. Theory of relativity!
The evening we visited was without the pizza chef, a good excuse for us to go back and try them. Good value and a very tasty meal in pleasant surroundings.

The Italian Cottage was able to squeeze us in last minute which was lucky and we were very thankful for. The restaurant is a very cute homely establishment catering for dine in and take away.
The start of the evening was a little chaotic as they moved us soon after seating us, however we did squeeze in last minute and found the staff very respectful and understood their situation. Drinks were a little slow to come out after being seated however again nothing unreasonable, the restaurant was full and the staff did a great job and getting it right even if it took a little bit longer.
And from this point onwards it was absolutely amazing. We ordered a prosciutto pizza, a four cheese gnocchi and a prosciutto salad and it was absolutely fantastic. Nothing took long after the slight delay in drinks and the food produced by the chefs was mouthwatering. The pizza dough and topping was so light and flavoursome, the salad was fresh and the homemade four cheese gnocchi was decadent and well made.
For desert we ordered an affogato which was beautifully presented and very nice.
The whole experience was delightful with wonderful food and delightful staff. A great establishment for couple or families.

Ordered take-away from The Italian Cottage on our honeymoon after great TripAdviser reviews. The online ordering process was easy, although images of the dishes would be nice. We opted to pay our $76 via cash on pickup in a couple of hours (specified time to suit our schedule). Upon arrival to pick up, wait staff went to check on the progress of our order. Five mins later we were informed our order was “just being wrapped up”. At the same time, we were also informed that due to being Easter Saturday, our order was also incurring a 15% surcharge (despite no mention of this when placing the order). Another 10 mins later, our order was finally ready to take home, almost 20 mins after our specified pickup time.
We got back to our hotel to eat our dinner and we were underwhelmed to say the least. The highlight was the seasonal greens we had ordered on the side. My wife’s meal (some form of 4 cheese gnocchi) was blander than anything we’d both ever tasted. Roast vegetable side dish was undercooked (pumpkins still crunchy) and the ravioli was fine.

My partner and I had dinner plans at The Italian Cottage. After 20mins of waiting, the waitress took our order. A further 35mins on and entree arrived, Aranccini balls that appeared to still be half frozen.... The waitress apologized and arranged for the entree to be remade, in the meantime the mains arrived. I must say the pizza was amazing. The mushroom risotto however was just ok and when we finally received the Aranccini balls, they were underwhelming.
No sooner had we finished eating (still will have a glass of wine left), a different waitress asked if she could clear the plates and if we wanted dessert. We politely declined dessert and immediately she said, no worries I'll get the bill. I have never had a bill come to my table this quick before. She returns with an eftpos terminal, tells me the price (no bill provided) and we pay straight away..... Have a good evening we were advised and left sitting at the table feeling awkward.

Cute spot with very tasty food. The pizza was on point, four cheese gnocchi was delicious and we appreciated the thoughtful addition of charred bread. Rocky the chef let us pop into the kitchen to say hi and when we realised the calibre is where he had previously worked in Sydney (Catalina, Bistrode, Chiswick) we understood why the food was so good.

Being a couple we were expecting a bit of a romantic dinner we were disappointed to be seated either side of families with crying children when there were plenty of couple seats away from family gatherings.
The service was friendly and efficient but at times overbearing as we were approached at least a dozen times whilst eating both entrees and mains.
The food was simple but appetising, although the linguine marinara had pieces of broken muscle shell throughout. The entree was a bit disappointing. The manager recommended a entree dish that was an overpriced cheese toastie which he glorified to a dish you would never forget. Overall I am not over keen to return but I always will give it a second chance as they may have had a bad night

This was our second visit to the Italian Cottage and it did not disappoint. We were greeted by a young waitress whose name was Ruby who , for her tender age showed lots of maturity, knowledge of the menu and was extremely friendly and confident. She show us her quick wit and kept us amused throughout the meal which made the evening more enjoyable. We both hope Ruby goes on to be very successful in her future endeavours. We both enjoyed our entrees and main meals and the desserts were excellent. We will certainly be returning to the restaurant again in the near future as the food was definitely genuine Italian cuisine.

Amazing place! I was a bit sceptical when we walked in, as this was our first time eating here. But the wait staff were all very friendly and the service was very quick, even though they had a sign up saying that they were currently understaffed. The food was absolutely amazing, they even made one of their dishes off the takeaway menu just for me. Prices were quite reasonable for the quality of the food. Recommend trying the bruschetta...it was to die for. We will definitely be back. Can't wait to try all the food options.

Enjoyed dining at the Italian Cottage for the first time on a weekend visiting the Hunter Valley. Food was very good and staff friendly and accommodating. We ordered the calamari which was absolutely delicious - it was fresh, not tough or salty. For mains, we ordered scotch fillet and pasta (tagliolini con verdure mista). The pasta was full of flavour. Meal servings were generous. The décor and furnishings are cosy and comfortable. This restaurant is good value for money. Would highly recommend the Italian Cottage. Will definitely come back for a meal on our next visit to the Hunter.

The Italian cottage is one of those Gems you discover and then find they exceed your expectations, we dropped in without a reservation but were warmly welcomed. Our waitress made us feel like family and she was attentive to our needs, now the menu was full of sensational dishes and we chose the Seafood risotto and Angel hair pasta with crab. These dishes were prepared to perfection and only surpassed by the homemade Tiramisu which was the best we have ever eaten. We Highly Recommend The Italian Cottage for a memorable dining experience.

Lucky to get a table without a booking.
Fortunate that the restaurant was able to do a customised dish for our pick-ish child (spaghetti in olive oil with prawns) and offered to make it in a child size as well.
It was a very pleasant and delicious dinner for our family - enjoyed by all.
Highly recommend to all, especially if you have a hankering for Italian.

Wow! What a hidden gem in the Hunter Valley! It was my hubbys 50th birthday and though it was a Sunday we were excited to find this quaint cozy romantic Italian restaurant open and were so excited when we walked in! Like stepping into Italy! We had the best seat in the house ~ a cozy corner booth and enjoyed the best pasta I’d ever had ~ homemade butternut pumpkin ravioli with sauce and a topping to die for ~ seriously wow! Hubby’s pasta was also amazing paired with a delicious Montepulciano red and wow wow wow the piece de resistance was the cannoli ~ 5 stars!! Could be served in the most expensive Italian restaurant you can imagine ~ literally perfect texture and taste!! Enjoyed a birthday tiramisu as well as couldn’t resist and was incredible too!! The service by the delightful Ruby was exceptional from the moment we walked in the door to saying our farewells ~ 10/10 experience! Couldn’t recommend higher to be sure you make a reservation to get a table ~ recommendation to go for the corner booth!!

Booked resturant after reading reviews online.
Pizza & pasta for dinner before heading to see Xmas lights.
Food was delicious, and well priced I thought, in comparison to restaurants I’ve been to near wineries.
We made the right choice to stop and eat as a family in Cessnock before travelling to the HVGardens.
Friendly service and a cosy and cute resturant interior, would defiantly recommend to others.

Today was the first time eating from the Italian cottage.
During the climate we ordered takeaway and picked it up.
We arrived home to eat and
the food was still hot with quite generous portions.
I ordered a crab pasta which was absolutely amazing.
My wife was very impressed with her veal and pork Bolognese.
We were offered a free pizza also as the order was over $50.
For dessert we had Vanilla canoli, which was devine. Super fresh and tasty.
Some of the best food in the Hunter.
We will be back!
