We were in Bendigo for the weekend and decided to to Sargun. We were disappointed when our vegetable samosas arrived and found them to be frozen in the middle. We sent them back and were asked if we wanted to have more samosas. Instead of...replacing the frozen ones we were charged for he replacement. It was definitely not the best Indian we have been to.More

Terrible customer service-Menulog order number: 277405411 Would never order or go Sargun again! Was Sunday (Oct 29th) evening. Ordered 61$ worth of food via Menulog. Went to Sagun around 6:30Pm to collect my food with my wife and 4 yr old son. The restaurant was...almost empty except for an elderly couple who were having a sit down dinner . There was a gentleman wearing a turban and a lady at the reception counter. I approached the counter . My wife and son stood a few feet away .The lady at the counter gave me a brief smile and then walked past me. I turned around to observe an Aussie looking , young couple who had just come up the stairs behind me. I was wondering why the lady didn't talk to me but had gone over to the couple who came after me . At this point I politely interrupted her and said I'm here to collect my menulog order which I have paid for, she then told me to wait a minute and while me and my wife looked in disbelief continued to ask the couple( who came after me )as to hopw she can help them. The couple had no reservation nor had they ordered any food and were just asking what the options were to take away or to sit down. After a minute or 2 they agreed to sit down and have dinner. Thereafter the lady came over and ask me what my order name was, and after handing me my food even asked what the order number was to double check) I almost asked her if she wanted my driving license to double check if I'm who I claim to be. In any restaurant or even a grocery shop you expected to be served according to first come basis. But it seems the lady at the reception at Sargun had still got the Colonial mentality and will bend over double and serve the Caucasian looking customers first even if they arrive well after the south asian looking customers that arrive there. Absolutely delicious! We haven't had a good Indian feed in years. We had the small banquet with butter chicken, lamb rogan josh, and garlic and cheese naan. Lovely owners who were up for a chat and amazing food. Bendigo is lucky to have you!

Excellent family run Indian restaurant in a gem of a Gold Rush ballroom (same era, dimensions and layout as the Brunswick Ballroom). Excellent aromatic and authentic Indian food keenly priced. The Sarjun has saved us twice arriving late from out of town as the only...kitchen open after 9 on a week night.More

Was looking forward to my butter chicken and rice meal here as it had really good reviews. I was just disappointed that the meal lacked flavours. Tasted like supermarket chicken breast in a tomato soup. I guess I was just anticipating it would have the...smoked flavour of the tandoor and not like Heinz tinned spaghetti. Also the meal was quite expensive for one and I’m my opinion, not worth itMore

Had dinner here end of the week, expecting it to be busy, but alas no. There were only 3 tables, 6 diners. The room is so big it really lacks atmosphere unless you love the oversized self portraits looking down at you or the indian...statues staring at you. Its a pity they still decorate Indian restaurants as such. Times have moved on. Staff were friendly and informative. The food was ok, but for Hot it was only mild in all our dishes. Entrees and Mains. We ordered Chicken Tikka, Aloa Tikki, Korma Curry, Beef Bombay,Naan and Rice. Reasonably priced A friendly piece of advise, this restaurant is up step, narrow stairs, which they don't advertise. If disabled you probably cant enter. Could not see a lift. Unfortunately not much to say on any other front except the Indian statue at the bottom of the stairs needs to be retired and the carpets given a really good clean. Probably too many other choices to hurry back.More

They must have had an off night. My ‘hot’ lamb dish was ‘mild’ at best. My wife had a prawn dish which was a bit tasteless. Her papadums were forgotten. The stuffed naan was very good, which saved a score of 1 from 5. I’m...sure judging from other comments the restaurant is normally better.More

Sargun India Tandoor Restaurant, Pall Mall, Bendigo Namaste. Our last evening in Bendigo before returning to Melbourne and we planned to share an Indian meal (ordering more than we could possibly eat on the basis of a second meal in the offing the next day...– or the day after - ah, the pleasures of transportable Indian cuisine; jee shukriya). Only we didn’t know the name of the place that we’d seen when walking along Pall Mall – only that it had definitely been Indian. So … back to Google Maps late afternoon and the name ‘Sargun India’ immediately leapt off the map. Check up the phone number on the web and, five minutes later, we had our table booked for 18.00 h that same evening. We had a little over an hour to get ready including the walk downhill through Rosalind Park from our friendly Airbnb place for the week. Crossing Pall Mall, we could see the green coloured door of the Sargun India and right next door the window on the dining room of a second Indian restaurant. We’d booked the one fully expecting it to be the other. What a strange mistake – but what a pleasant evening - a delightful meal in an interesting restaurant with great food, friendly waitstaff, pictures/décor/decorations to explore and less than 20 people in a restaurant which, we figured, could easily accommodate >130. The restaurant is large and not simply the floor area but the height of the ceiling and huge walls that are full of images of India and the people who represent almost 20% of humanity in all their diversity, cultural traditions and, in modern times, the diaspora that has spread and established communities throughout the world; taking their languages, heritage, foods and culinary skills with them. From the table in the restaurant there was a sense of deja-vu – that this was not simply the first time in a new restaurant, but one of continuity; the pleasant anticipation of Indian cuisine with a meal in the offing. It must have been two months since we had last eaten Indian. We could catch the aroma from the central table where a family party of seven were well into their noisy meal. Then there were the Indian manikins – a ‘pretend band’ in one corner and a couple leaning into the services counters at the far end of the dining room – the colours, and the wall decorations. We had been ‘welcomed’ into the restaurant by another manikin at the bottom of the stairs too. Two large paintings of a couple faced each other across the dining room – the smiling woman in a green saree with complementary red bodice, and the bearded man in a brilliant green turban with decorative flutes across the top that further emphasized height – the sort of head decoration you may a catch as a wedding or for ceremonial use. The man was also smiling. (Watch the border guards participating in the closing ceremony at the Indo-Pakistan border of an evening 25 km west of Amritsar – you’ll see similar if more dominant headwear – for the competitive/ritualistic marching/ceremonial interplay between both sides. Enjoy the patriotic reaction of the crowds – each to their own side of the border. And, if you can’t get there yourselves, pick it up on YouTube.) There was also a large wall map of India and the Indian sub-continent on the wall. You can check out where Amritsar is … in the Punjab, NW of New Delhi - agricultural breadbasket country. The restaurant was on the first floor of the building with a veranda out front over the pavement. There was even one hardy couple sitting out there – and we know that because we took the table for two next to the door and, 10 minutes later after we had ordered drinks and food, moved tables … there was a considerable drop in temperature each time waitstaff open/closed the door to service the couple outside. We sat sipping our cider and nibbling our papadums – crisp lentil bread with a side of chutney - and the hot dishes arrived together with a flourish. Never quite certain of the differences between the different curry mixtures (at least by local name), our choice is typically a couple of meats with a separate veggie option, plentiful rice with garlic naan bread on the side. This time it was lamb and chicken curries. The menu listed half-dozen options for each meat with a single price listed – lamb/$15.90, chicken $15.90 and mixed vegetables $13.90. Rice was $3.90/serving and garlic naan $3.50. So, prices were good/reasonable – it was the same for the entire meal. We paid $63 for our meals and drinks. When asked, the restaurant provided us with separate plastic take-away boxes for the food that remained in the serving dishes – meats, veggies, rice and naan. That second meal travelled well and ate equally well – mentioned above - reminding us with pleasure of the Sangun Indian in Bendigo earlier that week. Peter Steele 25 May 2021More
