From the warm welcome from Frenchman Nic - an engaging front of house specialist who has worked in some swanky European restaurants (which was obvious as the night unwinded) - to the attentive younger staff, the whole experience was a treat for my wife’s birthday she won’t forget!
The owner had recommended the “Feed me” 7 course menu and it didn’t disappoint - perfect size servings and we were advised very little gluten and fat in the menu with the idea we weren’t to be left over-full at the end - we were able to savour every dish! The Wagyu steak was a highlight as was the sorbet ice cream - but all the entree dishes were amazing as was the red snapper.
Supporting local suppliers with both alcohol and food is to be admired, and at $120 ea the 7 course is well priced for what you would spend for 3 courses elsewhere.
With the Alexandra Fountain view framed by the heritage building, and soft green velvet napkins very calming - it’s a highly recommended overall dining experience. Congratulations Mark and team :)

Located a beautiful old bank, the setting is very nice. My wife and I were celebrating our 50th anniversary (16/1). My wife and I were seated near to the window overlooking the central area of Bendigo. It was the luncheon menu that entailed tapas. We had 5 dishes shared between the two of us:- Skull island prawns (two large grilled prawns very tasty which my wife enjoyed when she is usually not so keen on prawns), king fish sashimi (very nice, lovely sauce), Korean chicken (very tasty and cooked to perfection), ginger pudding with caramelised pineapple ice cream (again cooked to perfection and tasty) and calendar cheese with poached figs (very nice but I felt a second cheese portion would have been better). Seating was at a a table for two, adequate size, but one side was a bench seat that ran and along the wall. Both comfortable but the beach seat was slightly higher than the chair and I feel that they should definitely be at the same height). Lighting was good, menu laid out very clearly and a wide selection of wines by the bottle and a smaller selection by the glass. The selection of the menu (available online) was quite varied with good labelling about gluten free, nut free, etc. Standout aspect was the excellent service from all staff and the genuine friendliness nd attention to detail displayed. The young waitress providing some history of the building. Granted the restaurant was not very busy at the time and giving them more time to converse with customers, but nevertheless, the staff demonstrate knowledge and efficiency in service. We had a lovely time there. Aim to return and would have no doubt recommending it to friends. We will follow up with a dinner in the not too distant future.
Small note. I thought the two framed photos on the North wall were not quite level. We forgot to mention it on leaving.

Fantastic evening all around. Very nice welcome by Nick, and excellent service from Brad.
Food was delicious, make that DELICIOUS (with a capital D), and the atmosphere was elegant & relaxed at the same time.
Taste and temperature of food were perfect, and pace of dining allowed us to relax and enjoy, never feeling rushed. [That’s important to us]. We ordered the Octopus starter and the ‘Sir Harry’ WAGYU flank and beef short rib.
Good wine advice too. Peanut butter mousse dessert was 💯❗️
Would love to return next time we are in town.

When you go out for a fine dining experience, you want to come away feeling like you were pampered, feeling special, and had a great night. You want to make great memories and rave to your friends "The food! The wine! The atmosphere! The service!"
We came here for a mother's day dinner. The restaurant was full - it was Saturday night. Unfortunately the staff were starting a new menu, and had no chance to test out their timing over the week. Arrived at 6.20, ordered at 6.40. Entrees came out over an hour later. We were starving, so ordered bread ($13 for 2 slices). Then another 45 + minutes for mains. At this stage we were so annoyed, but were assured by staff that food was coming. This is when you should start giving all the restaurant patrons free bread. Diners were just walking out. My poor mum, who decided on the 'main + dessert' option, had only eaten a slice of bread 2 + hours after arrival. We had mains around 8.40pm. Mum was so tired, she didn't want dessert. The staff were lovely and apologetic, but not once did they top up our water glasses, or offer free bread. They ended up comping our meals, but we still paid for bread, sides and drinks. The kitchen needs to get their act together. We left at 9.15.
I don't really remember the meal. It was nice. I just remember how long we waited for food. The chef needs a wake up call - you embarrassed the front of house staff and yourselves. Unfortunately our memory of Alium will be "That restaurant where we waited ages for food"

The only way to describe this place is exquisite. Everything. From the view out the window onto a night lit Bendigo, to the impeccable service and detailed explanation of each dish and wine, to the attention to detail and excellent meal portions. The espresso martini has been receiving lots of comments so I thought I’d try one and it was the best I’ve ever had, in fact, so en pointe that my non drinking fellow diner also had to have one. The wagyu beef was perfectly cooked and I absolutely loved the delicacy of the vegetables (and the side of pumpkin and feta literally melted in the mouth). A rich and substantial dessert, lightly seared juicy entree of scallops, lovely staff. No wonder it is receiving the ratings it has. So so worth it! Enjoy! Highly recommend!

Right in the CBD in what was previously an old bank building. The staff were excellent, they were aware of my wife's allergy and went out of their way to accommodate so we had no complaints.
Started with sourdough which was made locally, then had our mains - grilled black opal wagyu beef for my wife, and i had the Duck Breast with mushrooms and brussel sprouts. For desserts, my wife had the 'beesting' /almond/honeycomb/custard/praline, and i had Pear mille fuille/safron/honey ice-cream/ caramel & white chocolate. They had a reasonable selection of beer and wines. Enjoyed the food & service.

This is no MASONS.
Lovely restaurant and location with wonderful staff. We had a good entree - Proscuitto & Fig, and the Quail, which were very good. But mains were very disappointing. The Beef Brisket and Lamb Backstrap were very overcooked and quite dry. Also ordered the Potatoes, also very overcooked, not crispy. Dessert was disappointing, ordered the Creme Brulee which was thin and just not Rich and decadent as it should be. Our lovely waiter told us it was 'dairy free'!! (If I had of known would not have ordered)
My husband ordered the Pear Mille Feuille and was just not right, almost no pastry, hard pear, not very pleasant.
The lovely staff were apologetic and gave us a discount on the bill.

Best fine dining in town IMHO. The menu is different to the 'also ran' restaurants in town and a chance to try some extra ordinary dishes.
Not rushed and pushed out the door we had time to relax with friends have great wine from a wonderful wine list that offers different quality wines not seen in standard restaurants. Davids recommendations are top class.! [Yes I did get to meet the owner]
Great for a special occasion such as we celebrated but will come back for lunch.
This is not a pub or standard restaurant, its Melbourne style fine dining and just as good if not better and the 'window' is outstanding.

We really had high hopes from other reviews but this was such a horrible experience.
We arrived and weren’t greeted just asked if we had a booking. We ordered a cocktail just before 7pm.
After waiting almost 40 minutes we never received them, despite the waitress acknowledging we were waiting.
We didn’t get water and were not spoken to about food. I don’t know if the staff were training or not but we were pretty much ignored from the minute we sat down.
After having enough we got up and left. When letting the waitress know she looked sympathetic but the other bartender just gave use a eye roll and said “okay thank you”.
The food looked so good and we really wanted to try it. We were so disappointed.
We ended up going down the road and had a lovely meal elsewhere.
If you’re going to spend hundreds of dollars on a meal don’t go here.

Well we thought this place was excellent, inexperienced staff the only thing that prevented a five star rating. We were reminded of the TAFE test restaurant in Canberra: junior staff are lovely and very keen but show their inexperience. Three different staff approached us for our drinks order, twice we had to clarify we wanted a bottle not a glass. But these are minor points and the head waiter did an excellent job of marshalling his troops. The end product is the important thing and we loved the food and were very happy to pay $110 for a bottle of grand cru champagne.
We had salmon and quail for entrees and lamb and blue eye cod for mains. All were cooked perfectly and were delicious.
The decor is very sophisticated and comfortable.
Hugs all round when we left, would definitely go back and am sure it will be five stars next time. Well done to the team.

Elegant ambiance accompanies a concise but enticing wine/drinks list full of local offerings. We chose the six course chef tasting experience and were delighted from first to last dish. The kangaroo tataki was exceptional, but so was the cervice fish and the magnificent pork belly. The tasting serves were generous and beautiful on the plate, mesmerising on the tongue and filled our bellies completely. An absolute must for a special dining experience.

It's a lovely old building in the centre of Bendigo and the food was excellent. The service was friendly but a bit hit and miss. We ordered a beer when we arrived (it was 40 degreees outside) and then wine with dinner but the wine came first and we had to remind them we had ordered a beer. But given the quality of the food it's not cheap but it's well worth it.

We booked here for New Years Eve for a degustation style menu. The first course was a scallop dish and lovely, however thereafter a non event. We had on several occasions a plate of food dumped in front of 2 out of 3 people, with no explanation about them being to share between 3. So on the first occasion this occurred we were waiting for quite a while for the 3rd plate to be bought out and upon following it up with wait staff, after they enquired with the kitchen they advised it was 2 between 3, by this time the food was cold. The portion sizes were so tiny that they were not at all satisfying. After several more of these tiny, ordinary serves and bland flavours of food came out we ended up leaving and going elsewhere and getting a gourmet pizza as we were really hungry. The experience was such a let down and a very expensive one at that. A complete waste of money, with o rude female waiter.

After trying this restaurant last night, the six of us felt that the positive reviews for this place were from diners in a parallel universe. We booked online and when prompted to advise if this was a special occasion, it was made clear that we were celebrating a 70th birthday but no mention of that was made over the evening. While the setting was really quite pleasant, to us, the evening was let down by very average service and a confusing menu. Although not indicated in writing on the menu, the meals were apparently divided into starters, entree and main courses but the only green side dish was mixed in with the mains. Our waitress who later admitted after several blunders that she was “new to hospitality” lacked any obvious supervision and guidance and in this regard, the place seemed slightly rudderless. The bottle of white wine was left on the table and not in an ice bucket and we had to ask for water and wine refills on several occasions. The prices were to the higher end of the range whilst the menu was limited with odd meal choices. The mozzarella croquette (1) was tasteless, the lamb ribs (an entree) were quite fatty and the rib eye at $50 was also fatty with too much gristle. It was served as a single item on timber plate. Nothing else. It would have been helpful to us if we had of known that having both the lamb ribs and the steak was too much meat since there would be nothing accompanying them and another dish would have been more appropriate but no one explained anything to us. In fairness, those having the scallops and the snapper found them quite good although the fig with the snapper was tasteless and out of season. There seemed to be an aversion to vegetables or anything green aside from the one salad. The fastest thing of the evening was the arrival of our bill! We were unanimous that the only positive aspect of our experience was the fact that it gave us a talking point! We can’t recommend this place at all.

Chef's selection of six dishes arrived over nearly three hours, and every dish was average at best, with many feeling like pub food. Service was slow and inexperienced. Several times dishes arrived with only a one word description and we were left to guess what we were eating. Overall a bit disappointing. We won't be returning anytime soon. Bendigo has better restaurants at this price point.
