About

The Golden City Hotel, formally known as Geecees, was built in 1856 and originally named the Adelphi Hotel. Since it's first opening the hotel has seen many changes including the transformation to a cafe-bar in December 1996. Overlooking the beautiful tree lined main street of Ballarat, Golden City is renowned for having one of the largest restaurants hosting around 200 tables. We no longer see ourselves as a traditional hotel, but have moved with the times to provide a comfortable, safe environment where persons of any age can enjoy a coffee, wine or beer together with good affordable food available all day. The hotel offers two beautiful event spaces of varying sizes and design and caters for anything from intimate and private gatherings to large celebrations.

very pleasant experience

We called in here last Friday for some take away coffee and the waiter was so pleasant we decided to come back in the evening for some take away dinner. it was a pleasure to meet the chef and the owner, although briefly, and to be thanked for our business! What a nice thing to do. The food was excellent and my wife said the Chicken Penne was the best she had ever experienced. We wish the owner and all the staff the very best during this difficult time.

Lunch time visit with a mate!

Two delicious meals served for lunch, I had a lamb shank pie, while the other was a slow roast lamb. Both meals succulent tender flavorsome meat, veg and mash with red wine jute. Cold fresh on tap craft beers. Great friendly service. Awesome coffee anf great selection of cakes and desserts. A must visit for meals location in Ballarat.

Golden City Hotel meals worth their weight in gold

We had not been for a wile have moved here to live so took friends NOT disappointed we all enjoyed our meals even the 9 year old raved about his pizza and his waffles were fabulous The service was excellent from all staff but particularly the lass who served our table. She was aware one diner was Gluten free and acknowledged that the chips would not be suitable and double back with that information and that was great. We will be back more regularly now living here as we so enjoyed meal and service .Will be glad once COVID over so can sit little longer over coffees etc

Flake fish n chips or fish finger?

Order the fish n chips before 1pm and get the special price of $15.00. I asked was this still the flake As on the menu? Assured it was I ordered it. Sorry, not much more than a fish finger, bloody near missed it, thought it was a chip. Probably $2.00 worth. Don't think it was flake either.

Ignored & went elsewhere

Unable to rate the food, as we did not get served. Arrived went in & asked for a table outside. We were advised they would bring out some menus, however we sat there for sometime while staff came out & cleaned tables, but did not even acknowledge us, eventually we got up & left, still unacknowledged by any staff. The staff member just cleaned the table we were at, but had received no service at. So we went elsewhere & got great service.

Goog food but hidden fees

Trying to support local businesses during these pandemic times and these guys charge a 15% levy fee on top of your bill. Went for lunch today and once home after lunch called GC as I thought that my over $200 lunch was a little excessive. That is when I was told they charged me $26 levy fee. NOT ON GC? Lost a repeat customer. Happy to support other local businesses that won't take advantage of the generosity of local customers who are simply wanting to help local businesses. No need for these charges ...

Great Service & Yummy Meals

We had a late lunch and did not have a booking, the staff were accommodating and showed us to a table very quickly. We ordered the Lamb Flatbread and the Calamari both meals were a perfect size and yum. The service and staff were friendly and the food is value for $$. Keep up the good work.

Service was non existent, delivery was slow, food when it arrived was cold. I wanted to provide a higher rating. I know that businesses have struggled during recent covid restrictions however there is no excuse for slow service and cold food. I hope you are able to turn this around.

Delicious food

We dined here while on holiday in Ballarat. Staff were friendly and helpful, the menu extensive and the food delicious. Kevin had the chicken stir fry while I chose the beef cheeks. My meal was generous - with a large beef cheek, mash and a range of veggies. The beef cheeks were gelatinous and melted in the mouth. Kev’s chicken stir fry was also generous with a delicious hoisin sauce. We were so full we didn’t have dessert. A definite if staying in Ballarat.

Never going back

We have been going here for a long time, used to be lovely food, but deteriorating gradually, until a few nights ago when we decided never again. Husband, daughter and I went for an early dinner. We ordered 2 soups of the day (creamy sweet potato & bacon), fish and chips, warm chicken salad and porterhouse steak with mash and greens. Soups arrived in tiny teacup sized bowls, each with a toastie which we did not order. At exactly the same time our mains arrived. As we struggled to find room on the table for all the plates, we questioned why we got toasties when obviously we had ordered substantial mains, we were advised that “that’s how it comes” - not according to the specials board we had ordered them from. However the worst of this was that the soup was absolutely NOT sweet potato, nor had any bacon been within a mile of it. It was absolutely tasteless, watery, half cold pumpkin soup, no seasoning whatsoever . Even adding salt and pepper did not help, Fish and chips were soggy, under cooked and tasteless. Salad with same was mostly rocket leaves with a tasteless dressing of some sort. Warm chicken salad was tasteless, chicken dry and rubbery, dressing was, once again, tasteless. Steak was thin, had gravy instead of the red wine jus that had been requested, mash tasteless and veggies cold. We were wondering if they had a new chef/ management, but could honestly not be bothered asking, just wanted to pay ($120. - with 3 soft drinks/ no alcohol!) , go home and never return. Very sad as it used to be a great place for a quick, tasty, reasonably priced meal.

Steak night.

We saw an ad on TV yesterday for Thursday Steak Night, so called up and reserved a table. Lucky we did- the place was full, with a lot of people coming in. We were pleased to see that the $22 steak was porterhouse, and they were absolutely delicious. We had medium-rare, and I had no sauce at all, which gave me the chance to enjoy the marinade crust. We enjoyed our meal, and would recommend Steak Night to others.

Disappointing and overpriced

Ordered the porterhouse steak, thinnest porterhouse ever maybe 1cm thick.overall Not the usual generous pub style portions you might expect for $41 !!. Young staff worked hard but service was impersonal. On the upside- great range of beers on tap.

Yummy chicken parmigiana schnitzel!!

We had a very nice time here. The table service was excellent and the parmigiana chicken schnitzels were excellent. The chicken was very tender and the beer battered chips were crisp and also very good. We would recommend this pub for a good lunch or dinner.

Nice but NOISY!

The food was average but nicely presented. My risotto was lovely, my wife's lamb shank pie had too many flavours. The wines were excellent, really good. The place is just too noisy. Hard surfaces everywhere. As a person who wears hearing aids the noise was almost painful. I will come back, hopefully at a quieter time.

Good meal and fresh

The duck spring rolls are amazing and the chicken parma was very delicious and made of proper chicken breast. If you have your pet there is outdoor seating available. The bar staff are friendly and effective. It is a nice meal and busy which is a good sign.
