About
Our grandfather Frank was a well-known Blacksmith in the Ballarat region, and at the heart of a Blacksmith's shop is a fire they call the Forge. With a combination of the fire, great skill and plenty of hard work, great things are created. Take a look at our wood fire oven and you'll know why we are "The Forge". Established in 2010 by brothers Chris and Tim Matthews, The Forge Pizzeria creates delicious woodfired pizzas made with fresh local produce and high quality deli ingredients. We pride ourselves on pizza perfection, passion and a fun laid-back atmosphere. There is a fully serviced 200 seat restaurant in Armstrong Street, Central Ballarat, which complements the 20 seat take-away store in Sturt Street, Alfredton. We also now have two rolling mobile pizza ovens which operate at various events and private functions. Once your pizza is ordered, its action a plenty. Using our fresh healthy dough recipe, the stretcher starts stretching the base, great viewing in itself. The makers add the right amount of ingredients, which have all been freshly prepared on our premises, into the woodfire oven and then the magic happens. Fresh, healthy and woodfired.

Fortunately we'd made a reservation for a Monday night because they were quite busy. The menus were at the table when we were seated and our orders taken maybe 10 minutes later. Unfortunately one of the vegetarian pasta dishes was unavailable so my wife ordered a simple tomato based pasta and I ordered a vegetarian risotto. The drinks came promptly and we were really surprised when the main meals came in less than 10 minutes; it's really impossible to cook risotto fresh in 10 minutes! Unfortunately it was not only under cooked but also lukewarm. The staff were most apologetic and suggested instead a zucchini pasta without the prawns. This arrived some 15 minutes later, well cooked and hot. When the server brought the bill she said we hadn't been charged for the 2nd pasta because of the problems. We had a discussion with the supervisor and said we felt we should pay something because I had actually eaten a meal; she added a token $10 to the bill, very fair. Excellent customer service spoilt by some sloppy work in the kitchen.

Went to get takeaway on a Monday night and found it hard to get a park anywhere close by. Majority of people were at The Forge which was fully booked (Covid social distancing) and only places left were outside on the footpath area. This was also very busy. Many were turned away if no prior booking. Takeaway area was also busy. This was a good sign. Service was quick as they had many staff on duty. Menu was extensive. Pizza was a wood fired Volcano and enjoyed by both of us, A good size and one pizza would feed 2 adults.

Driving home from SA to Melbourne after our first interstate break in a year. Decided to break in Ballarat for an early dinner on Friday night and picked The Forge. They were willing to give us a table provided we weren’t staying more than 75 minutes. Just fine since we didn’t want to dawdle anyway. Loved the croquettes, rocket salad and Iron-something pizza. The crust was as we prefer it, thin with crisp bubbly edges. Service was pleasant and when we paid the bill they gave us 2 paper bags and told us to help ourselves to the selection of breads they didn’t sell earlier in the day. Fabulous, now we don’t have to worry about breakfast in the morning after being away 2 weeks. Thanks for the positive experience.

Overpriced…..one large capricosa And 2 smaller than expected Kids pizza which were tiny and the haw. was sorta passable but margarita had a joke splash/dot of strange gelatinous cheese…in the middle of each slice… no cheese elsewhere. yuck. Not cooked in the middle. Travelling, had no other dinner. I’ve made, managed and delivered pizza for Italian bistros and Turkish pizza places, also Dominos. This was worse than dominos at its worst! For a wood oven pizza - that is bad. Then pay 3$ shy of $60…. delivered. they said del. fee was $6....My god… I don’t complain often… 🤯🤬🤮 Still hungry and feeling ripped off.

We have been coming here for at least 6 years and tonight's experience was unacceptable. Firstly we were seated at table 9 close to the pizza chefs and the air conditioner was on full blast, whilst the pizza chefs were working hard and sweating, I certainly wasn't, in fact it felt like sitting beside a supermarket refrigerator, I showed the waitress my purple fingers and she still wouldn't move us, yet there were available tables at the front of the restaurant. Reservation was at 7pm, we got our drinks at 7:15pm and pizzas at 7:30pm, just before 8pm, a young male waiter informed us that our table was booked to someone else and we had 10 minutes left!! I wish I was joking, but this was our experience - apart from a safety perspective with cold air blowing directly at us, the service was unprofessional and below standard. I wanted to speak to the Manager Kyle, but apparently he was on holidays. This used to be our favourite restaurant and I'm really upset.

Have eaten here in the past and it has always been on the expensive side but several of the pizzas are now $34 or more. We had two pizzas, a salad, two soft drinks and a glass of wine and the bill came to $120, which really felt like poor value. I should add that the service wasn't great. The drinks took 15 minutes to arrive and one of the two pizzas was forgotten about until we reminded the waiter. Food was good but nothing extra special or deserving of the price.

What a great pizza restaurant! My husband is from Italy and even he was very impressed with how delicious it was!! The pasta was so good too!! I highly recommend the tortellini!!!!! I cannot wait to go back! We went with our baby and it was fantastic service! Everyone was so lovely and ensured we had everything we needed! We went for a 6pm booking in the hopes to get quick service with a baby. But even when the restaurant filled up and we ordered more items off the menu the service was still so fast! I think perhaps they saw we had a small child and rushed our orders to the front of the line! It was so appreciated and we were able to enjoy our night there (instead of trying to entertain our baby for ages while our order was being prepared etc). Thank you to the great staff for making our night so easy! Also great social distancing in the restaurant. We could have brought our pram in if we needed too!

After spending the day tripping around the Silo Art Trail we are spending a couple of nights in Ballarat. A quick tea before settling in for the night. Went to the Forge Pizzeria in Alfredton. The number of customers seemed to be a good recommendation plus the wood fired sign. There is quite an extensive menu, unique even. Made our selection and waited for about 20 minutes on Friday at 7.30pm, for it to be prepared and cooked. An excellent meal. If in the area give them a try you will not be disappointed.

We had a terrific lunch on Wednesday at the Forge. Love the atmosphere, the staff are very accommodating and the venue is done up beautifully. There are a wide variety of drink options available, my husband and I both enjoyed different beers. We had the pumpkin pizza and prawn and chorizo pizza which were both excellent. Then we moved on to the February special which was a sovereign hill raspberry drop inspired pizza and we couldn’t resist trying the mars bar creme brûlée as well as coffees, which were all excellent. We will be back and love visiting when in Ballarat.

We learned about this restaurant through Imogen Eveson’s Top 12 places to eat and drink in Ballarat (Australian Traveller, February 2022). He claimed this restaurant is a “long-time Ballarat favourite and is a winner every time”. Even though we didn’t order every item listed on their menu, their food is worth trying. We went there at around 7:00 pm and were seated immediately even though we don’t have any prior booking. By 7:30pm we placed our order and we got: Acciugata (sage and mozzarella pizza topped with anchovy fillets), Prawn and Chorizo pizza with San Marzano tomato, mozzarella, marinated garlic prawns, Istra hot chorizo, feta, rocket and lemon. We enjoyed our orders with umberto prosecco wine and a coffee martini. It took a while before our pizzas were served – after 45 minutes. Despite the long wait, for us, it was worth the wait – freshly cooked pizza and the dough was lovely – soft and chewy.

A Monday night escape from the kitchen brought us to the forge. Quick and friendly greetings. Very wide menu, caters for all tastes. Pizzas are a good size with a good quantity of toppings. Kids a catered for. Pasta dish was excellent! Recommended for families and mid size groups. Our waitress was attentive without being intrusive. Nicely done and thank you Bryony.

My friend and I turned up on a Saturday night with no booking. Despite how busy it was we got a table outside. We ordered the Pumpkin salad and the Blacksmith pizza to share. The food came out really quickly, it was really fresh and good flavours. I would go again.

I generally do not review if things do not go well but even though this does not get 5 bubbles and only manages a 3, I have to say the the concept certainly works as it keeps on attracting people regardless. The actual space is just fabulous and big, maybe just a tad large to be kept under control by the few staff they had on the night I attended. I counted up to seven dirty tables all around me and staff just kept walking past them empty handed as I suppose it wasn't their job to pick up an empty plate on their way to the kitchen. The concept of an unattended Host desk up front just baffled me all through my dinner as guests kept on coming yet the waiting game was clearly enjoyed by all. It seemed that the entire restaurant lacked management and this very young team ran around to do the best they could, and that they did! My pizza was just delicious and in order to keep my drink orders coming, I managed to make signals directly to the Bar lady who was able to catch my requests. We had a girl who sat us down and took an order but then she was gone to the other side and moved around as fast as she could. The restaurant then got really busy and the tables around be remained still uncleared. I did research before going, and caught the many promotional videos on YouTube the Brothers put together, so I was expecting Hospitality Royalty with an outstanding experience to match their pricing but this did not happen. Would I return ? not really sure.

Had a small Hawaiian and a lasagna ( which was described a traditional). It was very big so they kindly gave me a box to take half of it home, very tasty the next day. Can only recommend the tiramisu which we also took away very tasty
