Lovely lunch at Northern Ground today with local wines. Specials board with excellent fresh produce, Asparagus, Crumbed sardines...served quickly, with a smile and very friendly staff ( unlike our experiences in Paynesville cafes) The meal was very very good and a morsel of sardine got the five star Border Terrier tick of approval. Highly recommend..(Post meal coffee came quickly and correct temperature )

You would miss this place if you didn’t know it was there. Ordered the burgers which were nice however, a suggestion of a side of fries would top it off.
The chef was extremely accommodating for variations with the menu due to intolerance to certain foods. The other food was delicious and tasty.
Would certainly visit again plus the waiting staff were friendly, professional and attentive. A credit to the restaurant.

Fresh new and different menu with lovely local produce served with a smile. Constantly updated specials board with a fun fresh twist on old and new menu items but also have your old favourites on the regular menu. Could perhaps use a slightly higher range of children’s options but do cater for them with the basics

Having been in lockdown for months I was looking forward to a yummy meal out. I love duck confit, but was very disappointed with the offering at Northern Ground, way too salty. Served with bacon and beans in a cassoulet, also salty. When I commented to the waitress she said that duck confit is always like that, not to my knowledge. Note to staff don’t argue with patron and tell them this is how it always is served, not sure that the staff knew as the one taking the order had to go and ask what a cassoulet was!.
In the past have enjoyed some delicious meals here, this wasnt one of them.

Beautiful looking venue with outside courtyard. Menu is small and there is no kids menu. Disappointed in the serving size for the price. I ordered the anchovies and sour dough toast, anchovies were served still in the tin. Not worth $28. My friend had the wagyu beef burger and that looked lovely.

Always a pleasure to eat at northern ground. The food is always well prepared and presented, and the menu is original with ever changing specials. The use of local produces is also a plus. Finally, coffee and service are always good... All in all, the best place for lunch in Bairnsdale!

This place is amazing. We were driving through town on vacation and stopped for lunch because of the great reviews. We were not disappointed! I had the wild venison sausage pasta because, as I lifelong American hunter I have been cooking wild venison for 30+ years… and am pretty good wit it! But I learned something from this chef. In fact, when I got home I repeated his dish with my own venison sausage! 😀 His recipe is that good… and unique. Simple but great. Thanks. A great chef making great meals with local ingredients. Gippsland is lucky to have this chef… and places like this are why we eat out!

Difficult to find but definitely worth the effort. Reasonable prices with an interesting selection on the Specials board. I had the Masterstock Pork Belly roll and it was huge, tasty, and very filling. I tried a Mimosa drink (which I found disappointing - no blame on the maker - it was something different I decided to try). The grandchildren enjoyed their burgers. We sat outside in the welcome breeze. Helpful staff. Can recommend!

Went to eat here today with two friends. Food looked good. First impression was that their music was very loud so asked for it to be turned down. Waitress rolled her eyes when requesting chef to do so. Volume stayed the same. Why meet with friends when you can’t hear them? We left.....

Amazing food! I had the mushroom pasta and it was soooo delicious. There was five of us at this sitting and not one bit of food left on anyone’s plate! Will definitely visit again. Compliments to the chef.
Probably my only comment was the waitress eagerness to get us out and interrupted our meal to say we had 30 minutes left before we had to leave. Only miner and the food was well and truely worth it.

Many thanks for your review, but most importantly, apologies for the interruption to your meal. Unfortunately around this time of restrictions, we were having to be pretty strict (Its definitely not something we enjoyed doing!), however it could possibly have been handled better at the time.
Hopefully, with the lack of restrictions these days, we can welcome you back for an uninterrupted breakfast, lunch or dinner.

Great looking venue with plenty of friendly staff, but...... a simple request for a large cappuccino proved too complex. The coffee was barely lukewarm so I had to send it back. We will have to think carefully about whether or not we go back again. Lunch was just ok.

Beautifully prepared food. We loved our lunch at Northern Ground when passing through Bairnsdale. Tasty local ingredients and generous portions. I’m not into coffee but it met my husband’s high expectations, he had two. It was noisy, particularly near the counter and coffee machine, there may been quieter spots at the back.

Visiting family in Bairnsdale I often struggle to find good coffee . My search is over! The coffee is fantastic and the staff are lovely . We are going to pop in on way home too as the food looks amazing !

We had ploughman's lunch, sardine toastie and potato and water cress soup. All were really good - fresh food well prepared and presented. The service was fine.
Unfortunately the hot chocolate one of us had was, in the circumstances, disappointing. It seemed lacking in the secret ingredient - chocolate. Classique just round the corner does it much better.

Can't believe i hadn't had breakfast here before.
Food, service and seating out back was absolutely fantastic.
Can't fault it in any way, and the coffee was definitely a highlight.
Giid job guys, highly recommend and will be back more often.
