We were looking for a reasonably priced fine dining experience in Launceston and we struck gold. Luz is an intimate, well-appointed restaurant with a limited, yet well-balanced menu. The wine list is also restricted, but thoughtfully chosen. The quality of the meals was first class and, as others have pointed out, the scallop and cauliflower entree is a real highlight. Our two mains, the Tasmanian wallaby and the Meander Valley pork belly, were beautifully presented and absolutely delicious. Luz is not only a star of Launceston’s restaurant scene, but also among the best in Tasmania. Highly recommended.

My partner & I met a friend for dinner while in Launceston. We were welcomed by a friendly and very efficient waitress in a spacious & comfortable setting, while the menu choice is small the quality of the meals are absolutely delicious (recommend the Wallaby especially & chocolate fondant). Price is up there with what you would expect in a quality restaurant and you will not be disappointed. Will definitely return.

Running out of eats to try in Launceston, we decided to try the Luz Restaurant and we came away saying this is possibly the best dining experience in Launceston. The atmosphere was great, no loud reveberations like some in Launceston, and you can actually listen and talk. Entree was white wine poached oysters, and it was delicious. The white wine sauce was scrumptious and I gobbled every bit of that sauce. We both had braised ox cheeks in red wine jus for mains. The cheeks were absolutely soft and melted in our mouths. My wife commented that in many places, the vegetables were an after thought. But not at the Luz. Accompanying the ox cheeks were polenta and dutch carrots. Both were done excellent. In fact, one would often find polenta a little gritty, but not here. Smooth. We also ordered side dishes of potato (fried with paprika and sea salt) and broccolini (charred with hummus, kale and dukkah), and both were cooked to perfection. The dukkah was perfect on the broccolini. Desert was Pavlova roulade with raspberry sauce and fresh strawberries. Again, it was joy and delight. In fact, it absolutely no trouble for the staff when I asked if they could add vanilla bean ice cream to my dessert. We totally recommend Luz as a fine dining restaurant and one definitely in respect of the atmosphere, and the service provided. The chef even walked around and had a chat with customers.

Small menu dining in the best possible way, every dish was well thought out and made with careful attention from fresh seasonal produce. The meals were rich and flavourful and left you completely satisfied, basking in the warm glow that can only come from a brilliant meal well enjoyed. Our group of 4 shared one of each of the starters; fresh Tasmanian oysters cured salmon in a delicious sauce and pumpkin, ricotta and goats cheese ravioli (the chef added an extra ravioli for our group to make it easier for us to share without us even asking, thank you Louis). Everything was perfect and set the standard for what continued to be an amazing dinner. I had an amazing red wine beef linguine ragu from the specials board that was perfectly seasoned and with just the right amount of richness in the tomato sauce. As well as finishing off some of my partners gnocchi that came in a delectable sauce. I also looked enviously at the meals enjoyed by the couple we dined with, a tender perfectly cooked braised ox cheek and spot on medium rare wallaby dish. To finish a dark chocolate fondant with raspberry sauce and vanilla bean icecream topped off for me one of the best dining experiences in Launceston. If you haven't been past here and tried the food that Louis creates your are seriously missing out.

Louis and Nadia operate a lovely restaurant, Luz, within the The Grand Hotel in Tamar Street, Launceston. The service is impeccable and though the menu is small, there is something to entice everyone. My husband ordered the oven roasted trevalla with house made gnocchi and peas in a delicious sauce. I had the most beautifully cooked and presented wallaby, served with cauliflower puree and these gorgeous leaves of transparent onion, topped with crunchy capers and sage. It looked - and tasted - stunning!

This has become a new must visit when we are in Launceston. The food was absolutely fantastic, my 9yr old son gave his gnocchi 100 stars out of 99, he absolutely loved it. All our main meals were divine, and when they had unfortunately ran out of one of the specials the chef took to creating a special similar dish so my father could still have what he wanted. The service was prompt and friendly, the wine list was lovely and again the food and chef absolutely amazing. It is a small restaurant so I would recommend booking so you don't miss out.

Great food, not a large menu but could have selected any of the dishes. A personal experience as the chef took the time to say hello and check on our meals and experience. Great atmosphere in a lovely restaurant with tasteful decor.

Having tried almost every restaurant in Launceston, I can say without a doubt that the food at Luz is the best I've experienced in the city. If you're looking for an intimate experience with delicious French food that is delicate, flavoursome and interesting yet unpretentious - try Luz! The service was also the best I've experienced. Staffed by just the chef and one waiter, the restaurant is equipped to serve a limited number of tables, the service was impeccable and so professional, something you don't often get when dining out in Launceston. We had the scallops as entree, (like all of the other reviews say, a must try!) fish and beef for mains, and chocolate fondant and lemon tart for dessert. All perfect. What more can I say!

Dine here every time I stay at the Grand Hotel and have tried most of the menu items now and have never had a dish I didn't absolutely adore. Nicole is great and makes me feel comfortable which can be difficult when eating out by yourself. Louis is a fantastic chef and makes the experience even better by coming out to explain the dish or just to see if I'm enjoying the meal. Can't recommend this place enough and has to be one of the best restaurants in Launceston if not the whole of Tassie.

This small, boutique, cosy restaurant in Launceston is a delight. You will need to book ahead though as the chef and host run the whole show. The decor is quirky, the menu refined and the service courteous professionalism. We arrived a little early so were seated in a small lounge area for a drink prior to taking our seats in the dining area. The menu reflects freshly available produce with an attention to detail found in the best restaurants around the globe. The difference here is Luz stays within the bounds of its capacity to cater for the limited number of discerning diners they feel comfortable they can manage in any sitting. Key dishes for us were the ravioli, wallaby and pork belly. The ravioli especially was unlike anything we have had before - so silky and smooth. If you can fit in dessert, the fondant was deliciously rich and went very nicely with a recommended white port like wine. We agree with other reviewers the wine list could benefit from a little more variety. Another boutique beer or two as options wouldn't go astray either. All in all, we will return next time we are in Launceston.

Words to describe this high end boutique restaurant hidden away on the ground floor of an old hotel include, excellent, calm atmosphere, small menu and wine list, superb local ingredients, experienced and motivated chef and wonderful server. We dined for an early 5:30pm dinner. The place is staffed by only two people (server and chef). They run an extremely disciplined operation and only serve twenty diners per night. We saw one couple being declined even though only four tables were occupied. This results in attentive service and quality food being presented promptly. Choose any dish from the limited menu. All looked superb. The chef keeps a low profile and I don't know his surname. I doubt he enjoyed working in large, high pressure environments. The wine list is ridiculously small and is my only criticism. Launceston, you are so fortunate to host this unique restaurant. We spoke to a few locals in the hospitality business and none was aware of its existence. Make sure to book (good online experience with no need for credit card security) soon and avoid disappointment.

Staying in Launceston for a few days and have eaten there twice. As I wasn’t wanting a full meal either night I had entrees each night and one night a dessert. The pork belly and the mussels were both terrific. The mussels had diced chorizo added which had me concerned but it worked. The pavlova was beautiful to look at and eat. Wine list was not extensive but my choices each night were appropriate for the meal and not expensive.

We stayed overnight in the hotel, very pleasant accommodation, so this restaurant was a logical choice, particularly since we had experienced a delicious meal there some years ago. However this time we were only half lucky. My husband's barramundi was delicious, although the $16 side serve of broccoli wasn’t worth it. However my wallaby was quite tough and the worst flavour of any other wallaby I’ve eaten. I had to request a steak knife but still struggled to cut it. I ate about half the meal and after he asked, explained to the waiter that I found it too tough. Mistake! The chef then appeared and, standing some distance away, berated me for some time on my poor food judgement. A very unpleasant man! We won’t be coming back to this restaurant again.

We had the Tasmanian scallops with a trio of cauliflower, creamed, seared and tiny buñuelos, very original and tasty dish - followed by absolute melt in the mouth beef chef surrounded by a moat of perfect consistency polenta. Yummy wine and not overly sweet pavlova, with three types of raspberry topping, dried, fresh and coulis. Friendly and welcoming staff. A happy night out and spacious restaurant. Thank you!

I had 9 oysters and the shallot vinaigrette was equal to the best in France, then we both had eye fillets - cooked exactly the way we like it. The potatoes are magnificent, as was the cheese platter and then the roulade and chocolate fondant. We'll be back. Excellent service and beautiful food (and wine)
