Once a highlight this restaurant is slipping with each visit. Granted, it was a busy evening with a full house of guests, however, our meal was disappointing. We ordered a cocktail from the specials list, mistletoe cocktail, that tasted of little other than lime juice and soda water. We both had a fish dish from the specials menu, after the seafood pasta we initially ordered was unavailable. (We were advised of this 10 mins after we had ordered). So after arriving at 7.30 we finally had our meal at 8.30. The fish meal was more the size of an entree and at $50 wasn’t what we had expected. The fish had a nice flavour, however was only just warm. The waitress asked us how the meal was, we explained the fish was only just warm. She did offer to “heat it up” - we declined. We thought we would give dessert a shot and ordered the raspberry semifreddo. This was nice. Overall a lacklustre experience. The waitress advised that they pass the feedback on but it makes no difference, hence my desire to write a more public review. It will be some time before we bother to go back to R and H, and will explore other options instead. Disappointing.

Had lunch here. Food was nice, service was great, took awhile to get our meal. The biggest disappointment was a$5.50 surcharge per person on the birthday cake we supplied. I understand a lot of places have a surcharge but $5.50 per person was very expensive. What if not everyone had cake ? Or let people know it’s per person not just saying there is a surcharge. The surcharge cost more than the professionally made cake. Very disappointed with this maybe charge a small % on the whole cake not per person totally ridiculous.

Our first visit here after reading a lot of good reviews and seeing nice looking pics on social media. It didn’t disappoint. We had salt and pepper squid salad and the steak. The squid was soft, tender and delicious. The steak was perfectly cooked (medium rare on request). Fried were crispy, hot and topped with a the perfect amount of seasoning. Cocktails were well made and very tasty. We ordered from the special menu and are keen to see how these change. We have already booked for the next time we are in Launceston.

Went to this restaurant for a family lunch. Seafood platter ordinary and overpriced. My daughter ordered risotto that was squid ink and not clear on the menu and was inedible so didn't eat any lunch., she would not have ordered this had she realised and was not made aware by the waitress. My grandchildren wanted spaghetti bolognaise which was on the menu but not available. We complained about the inedible risotto and no compensation offered for a terrible dining experience despite spending nearly 400.00 for lunch. The waitress did share they may have to review this menu item because they have had many similar complaints. Very disappointing we won't be back or recommending this restaurant.

The only nice thing I can say is our waitress was lovely and the potatoes was great but unfortunately everything else was a let down. - Cheesy Bread - Portuguese Fried Chicken - Fisherman Favourite - Garlic & Herb Chat Potatos The cheesy bread had absolutely no garlic and for $14 to receive 2 pieces of bread with melted cheese was a let down. The Portuguese Fried Chicken was absolutely disgusting, I think we ate maybe 3 pieces between the two of us. The sauce was so vinegary and just wasn’t pleasant to eat Fish man Favourites, look for $36 for a small price of fish, 3 scallops and 3 salt & pepper squid it wasn’t value for money unfortunately. The only nice thing we can say was the side of potatos was very nice! We had a few drinks which one was a cocktail called the Berry Refresher, very sour with the gin but we only had one. The wine and beer was very overpriced Walked out with a bill for $175 for the food plus 2 wines, 3 beers - definitely wasn’t worth that type of money

After spending 12 wonderful nights exploring Tasmania we thought we'd celebrate our last night dining out at this highly recommended. restaurant. I ordered Oyster Kilpatrick which was diecious. I asked about the heat of the seafood chowder and was informed that it was spicey so before ordering I was given a taste test of the base. I found it way too hot so ordered the striped trout and broccolini instead. Unfortunately this meal was served with the same spicey base I'd only just sampled and obviously could not eat the fish. When the waiter asked me about the meal, I told thim what I thought so they came back asking whether i'd like to try another main so Ichose gnocchi which would be fairly basic to prepare.. Upon tasting it it was like it had been completed covered in SALT! It was toasted prosciutto! This was not mentioned on the menu at all. Upon payment I was still expected to pay for half price for a meal I couldn't eat. I was a tad shocked but paid it as we just wanted to get out of the place. Overall apart from the oysters and drinks it was inedible! Won't be back!

As a business we choose not to reply to reviews often as we are the first to take accountability if we are to get it wrong. Our team are not robots, nor are they machines without feelings. On this occasion our team went well above to help you enjoy your evening & we would like to clarify and give insight to your comments in your review as we all know there are 2 sides to every story! Firstly, we do not have a seafood chowder on the menu – the dish you are referring to is our Goan style seafood curry, on the menu it is written as a curry-based dish. Upon your request to sample the curry as you don’t like spicy food our chef obliged and sent you a sample of our Caldine curry sauce to taste. You opted not to choose the Goan Seafood Curry and ordered the market fish, which to correct your statement was a stripey trumpeter; the description again explains that it is placed on a Caldine sauce (a quick google refers to this as a mild, pale & creamy curry) served with saffron potatoes & broccolini. Our waiter was confused by your order as you had mentioned you did not like the spice in the curry, hence not ordering the seafood curry. It is clearly stated on the menu the market fish is placed on the Caldine sauce. Once you had tasted this meal and explained you were not enjoying it due to the curry sauce our team offered to replace this dish along with your guests’ meal – which was the Goan style seafood curry as your guest found it too spicy, again you had both tried to curry sauce the chef sent for you to taste. We replaced both dishes at no cost to you even though there was nothing wrong with the Market fish or the Seafood curry and also provided you both with a complimentary beverage which again we were not obliged too as there was nothing wrong with the meals presented to you. Although this is a direct cost to our business, wanted you to enjoy your evening. You chose to replace the meal with our house made gnocchi, and your guest chose the pork loin. Our team member then came back to the kitchen explaining that you did not like the gnocchi – at this time, our restaurant manager approached the table once again – the dish was barely touch or tasted. You complained that the Gnocchi was too salty, it clearly states on the menu that the Gnocchi is finished with a house made prosciutto crumb as its flavour profile mixed with the olive tapenade would enhance the flavour of the prosciutto – once again we asked what we could do to assist you and you mentioned that you would like to leave. Our restaurant manager took the time to offer you the gnocchi in a takeaway box to try later and then explained that we would discount the meal by half as you had not consumed it however reiterating that there was nothing wrong with the dish. You have said that you won’t return and although this is not the desired outcome that we would like from guests in our venue we are not disappointed. No where in your review have you mentioned the efforts our team made to ensure that you enjoy your evening even though it was your poor decisions that made your evening disappointing. We would suggest that when eating out in future please read the menu and if you are unsure on a menu item to ask as you did in the initial instance or perhaps order something that you are sure you are going to enjoy as your guest mentioned – perhaps you should have ordered the fish and chips.

Arrived for our booking at 6.30pm. As per our booking time. Received our main course at 8.35pm we where starving. Staff kept looking at us and asked had we had our meal yet? Then came back and said it would not be long three times. Waiter staff looked concerned but kitchen staff just did not get out main course out to us. We only had the seafood so it was only fried in oil. Then at 9pm asked if we wanted to order sweets. Lol. Should have given us ys discount for the inconvenience. Not a good experience.

After eating in Launceston and the Tamar Valley for a week, we were excited to finish our culinary adventure at Rupert and Hound! A very underwhelming dining experience! Fish was cooked well and tasty but the salad and vegetables were wilted, warm and lack lustre! Off cuts of vegetables were served and the salad was inedible! Service by wait staff was very good! Very disappointing dining experience!

Things started out ok, our starters were fine. Unfortunately, the mains were not to our taste. Although I left all of my fish and my dining companion most of their steak, we were not asked if everything was ok. Perhaps the staff are so use to diners leaving meals they don’t bother asking anymore. The worst meal in Tasmania by a country mile. Had we been asked we would have said politely “not to our taste”! However, the steak was fatty and if poor quality and the gummy shark overcooked with an odour! Obviously, not recommended!

Venue was okay, service was good, but the food was disappointing. Risotto was very uninspiring and flavourless. Steak was very small certainly not what was advertised, tough and undercooked. I’ve never been charged for a source accompaniment for a steak in my life. Many better experiences in Launceston than this, wouldn’t go back.

Family birthday meal for the first time at this restaurant. Not very busy and the staff were attentive. Warm evening and we asked for some water. Straight from the tap into the bottles - no cooling. Asked for ice and a glassfull was supplied. Various meals selected but found a lack of vegetarian dishes. No sides of vegetables were offered. Steaks were great - couldn't be faulted. Fish dishes comprised of thin pieces of shark not like the pieces of flake we have come to expect in Tassie!. We had desserts but were dismayed to find a $5.50 a head cakeage fee applied because we had taken a birthday cake in! Can't fault the staff but it's the little things that matter.

Suggested as an alternative to Cataract on Patterson but fell well short. Entrance is narrow and uninviting and restaurant was cold and w/o soul. Food did not meet expectation. Duck pancakes were dry, crispy and tasteless and looked nothing like duck. Scallops were small, not plump like one expects of TAS scallops. Gummy shark as a fish option - really, was I in a restaurant or takeaway fish and chip shop! On plus side, selection of TAS wines was good together with service but did not make up for disappointing food. Could not recommend.

Ordered fisherman's basket x 2 = $62 Wow what a rip off!! All up a few chips, 2 bits of skinny gummy shark, scallops smaller than 5c piece, and under cooked calamari..where is our salad?? Not to be seen. Avoid this place..better off going to a cheap old fish & chip shop!! Wtf Launceston..was expecting top quality for this price!!

The flight from Adelaide to Launceston was a quicker experience than waiting for service and a meal at Rupert & Hound. From the moment we sat down, the service was slow and inattentive. After waiting over 30 minutes to get someone to take our order and another hour for our food, the host and wait staff then stood leaning over our food, which was ready on the pass, to have a yarn with the chefs. Whilst our food was delicious, the servings were as generous as a kid’s meal but sadly four times the price. Would recommend reviewing your options if this is on your list to visit while in Launceston.

Overall fantastic, just need to improve on service. The food was delicious, fresh and very tasty. I opted for the duck pancakes then the squid for main. Great serving alternatives for both dishes than the usual you normally receive. The duck was small fried pieces in thin pancakes, the squid crumbs were tangy yet crunchy. Being a solo traveler I understand I’m taking up a full table, yet was told they were fully booked so put me in a table to the corner looking at a pot plant, yet there were many free tables for the entire night elsewhere. Shame about the table seating as everything else was lovely.
