Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I have enjoyed some magnificent steak in the USA, Canada, UK, Europe and Australia. The steak I ate at The Barn is up there with the best of them. It was very tender, intensely flavoured and just a pure delight to eat. The baked potato...was exceptionally delicious and the sour cream it came with had a lovely silky texture. It was beautifully accompanied by shredded fennel and red onion. Service was sharp but unatrusive. A faultless dining experience.More

We went here for dinner and was not disappointed the meals were perfect and the staff were friendly and welcoming. Pricing was reasonable for a nice night out

We stayed in the four bedroom house with another family we travelled with. The house was an odd layout but had plenty of room for the 8 of us. We had breakfast at the resturant in the morning. It offered a basic menu but the...items we had were tasty. House had a washing machine and dryer which came in handy. Would recommend for families or a larger group travelling together.More

Great accomodation in stunning garden setting. Quiet, clean and spacious rooms, set in a spectacular rambling garden. Beautiful for a walk and to meander through vegetable garden which provides for the restaurant. Food was amazing - both the steak dinner and fresh breakfast.

The Steaks were very well hung and were very tender. The wagyu was superbly done as was the prime rib. Cooked to perfection. The entre platter was good too except the for the prosciutto which unfortunately seemed under matured and smelled porky! Service was good...to start with but after the mains were served, it was difficult to get the attention of any waiter. The wine served to the two of us was a little disappointing as it was from the bottom of the bottle and my serve had some dregs in it and was not a complete measure. A bit annoyed but overall the steak quality equalised the negative.More

Went to the Mount for a friend's milestone birthday as they were having their dinner party at the Barn - stayed at the Barn as well as they have great self contained unit accommodation. Venue is very good. Had a quiet couple of drinks in...the Piano Bar partaking in a couple of the local craft brews. Yum. The meals were very very good. Choice of mains and the steak was super - cooked to perfection. Breakfast the next morning was also very good. Overall, a very nice venue to stay and dine at and I highly recommend it.More

Good service, great atmosphere. Let down by the steaks, which were poor quality and too much gristle. Room was great, just a shame that the 1 thing the Steakhouse should do well is their special.

I was told this restaurant knows how to cook a steak. I confirm that The Barn indeed cooks a great steak. They also have a nice selection of wine by the glass. I had the Mayura Station Wagyu eye fillet with a glass of 2014...Balnaves Cabernet Merlot. Sure, you can hardly go wrong with wagyu, but I recommend dropping by to check it out for yourself the next time you're in Mount Gambier.More

We return to The Barn every visit to the region. The steak is divine in both quality and cooked to our liking. Other meals have also been outstanding. Don't miss desserts as they really are a treat. Meal sizes are generous. If you are really...lucky you will be served by Kay is is not only a great waitress but does her job with a constant smile and a subtle humour. The restauant cellar which you can enter is amazing. As the restaurant is carpetted it isn't too noisy and tables are set apart at a good distance. I wouldn't take children.More

Made a booking 3 weeks before our visit then to find out that our name was not even on their list when we turned up- luckily they’re not so busy ( as otherwise ) things would be very interesting! Staff to remember that they shouldn’t...second guess their customer knowing what they choose to eat and how they want their steak cooked! This Indian/ Pakistani waiter also poured our water and water splattered everywhere in our table like ( he just didn’t even care ) no sorry or what so ever - then after we finished eating this lady collected our plates and didn’t even ask if we enjoyed our food. I don’t mind paying 5 star restaurant price - but please guys, take this as a feedback and little hospitality training of staff wouldn’t hurt. Also, a signage where customers can park their cars would help as well. Anyways, Steak was top-notch! Hats off chef! Keep up the great work in the kitchen….More

This is a restaurant that appears to live on its past. Ordering Mayura Wagyu beef with a marbling rating of 6-7, I expected much more. It was dry, overcooked and seemed to be cut with a bread knife. It was hacked rather than delicately sliced....Given the price, this place is really joking with what they serve. Not to mention the most sour side of coleslaw I have ever tasted and the fact that the appetisers arrived after the mains. I won’t discuss the deserts but clearly not made by a qualified pastry chef. Service was slapdash and resembled a buffet rather than fine dining that it attempts to emulate. Sorry Chef Alfons but you need a close review to get my vote. Very disappointing as it was to be a highlight of our trip.More

Away for CraftAlive Mt Gambier. The Barn was a fair way out of town so it was quiet. The gardens were lovely, however we stayed in Unit 12 1 bedroom apartment. The couch was a pull out couch - we didn’t use it for that....The cushion zips had busted and we couldn’t enclose the rubber cushion back into it and zip it up - completely busted. It was t a “cheap” place to stay so I would expect things like that would A1 and in tip top shape.More

Food overpriced. Wine ridiculously expensive. Fish was bland. Paid $12 for a glass of wine and only got half a glass. Seriously, if your menu states per glass, I expect to get a glass of wine - not half a glass. Went to the pub...the next night - had twice as much food for half the price. Will not return.More
