Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Kawul Restaurant is always on our list to visit when we are in the Hunter Valley. The restaurant is situated in the beautiful Calais Estate Winery. We had breakfast at Kawul twice (few months apart) and each time the menu had new and exciting dishes....The use of native ingredients make Kawul dishes unique and delicious. There is something for everyone: sweet or savoury. The staff are always friendly and makes the experience memorable.More

My wife chose this restaurant for lunch to celebrate our wedding anniversary and we were very disappointed. For the amazing potential this venue has, it is very poorly managed.. We arrived before our booking and was seated immediately which was nice. I found the menu...was limited, and after some time of choosing (as we couldn't quite find anything that suited) we were told that all 3 options we wanted were not available! So we just ordered some things to share as we were confident at that time of the day we wouldn't get in anywhere else. I ordered a dark beer and was told there's a chance it wouldn't be available! My wife ordered a bloody Mary which was disgusting. The day was very windy and the wind shades kept creeping up by themselves, which meant we kept getting blown away. There was a wine glass that was knocked over and shattered on the table next to us. The wait-staff seemed young and inexperienced, and even though the place wasn't busy, they seemed flustered. Huge disappointment for us. I wouldn't recommend to anyone based off our experience.More

This restaurant is housed in an old sand stone cottage. Very charming, rustic & comfortable space. The food was inspired. My spatchcock was cooked to perfection. Accompanied by baked brussel sprouts & celeriac mash. The others had slow cooked lamb or barramundi. The desserts were...also fabulous. The wine list had a selection from the adjacent winery, Calais. Great value. A must try.More

We had a three course Saturday night meal on the verandah upstairs at the Calais Estate property. The service was efficient, the food was good. Dessert not quite up to standard of entree and main. Good value for money, wine list really just Calais Wines...and a few guest wines but at very good price pointMore

Brought my wife here for Valentine’s Day. As soon as we tasted the dukkah and ciabatta from the starter menu we knew we stumbled across a gem. Everything we ordered was just perfect and staff were very friendly. Will be coming back.

Lovely ambience, great service and delicious food. A surprising venue nestled in the vineyards with a beautiful view of the estate. Professional but relaxed service, interesting menu with many vegan options.

We have returned multiple times the restaurant ambiance far better since relocating to Calais Estate but the food and service are on scrutiny on this review. This restaurant is outstanding, our last visit for lunch we were seated on on the balcony overlooking the estate...what a great outlook. Our waitress very attentive and pleasant, the food excellent and reasonably priced. The wine list has local wines again reasonable priced. Yes we are locals and with such a huge range of restaurants in the valley to choose from offering great food, Kawul is top of the list Fully recommended..More

Great food, great service, not overpriced, friendly staff. I can't believe we hadn't heard of this place previously. It will probably be our first choice for future visits to the area.

We had been driving around as you do when your doing the wine areas. Sampling at Calais which has excellent wine and speaking to the lady giving great details we asked about a lunch spot. She recommended upstarts and checked to see if we could...get in and so after tasing we headed upstairs. Nice open area with an excellent view from the balcony across the grape vines. Good selection of dishes and of course wine. Wife had two entree and I had a main. The meals were a good size, fresh and tasty. Service was friendly, informative and food came at a good pace even thought they had a wedding going on. Will be backMore

We are Hunter Valley locals and always on the lookout for good value and excellent food. We were not disappointed on the Monday of the June long weekend. I received a reminder about my online booking and we were welcomed with a smile and efficiency,...straight to the table on the sun soaked verandah, menus presented with water. The dishes we chose from the short and interesting menu turned out to be superb, with subtle flavours using Australian herbs and spices. The twice baked goat's cheese souffle was brilliant, the hazlenuts offering some wonderful textural crunch. The pan seared scallops were served with a lovely Jerusalem artichoke and some avruga and a tawny sauce. Brilliant flavours and texture again. Mains were beef cheeks for me - fall apart, juicy, perfect - and saltbush and pepperberry calamari for my partner. It was delicious. A side of chips with bush tomato seasoning was just right. No room for dessert today! Glasses of wine at very reasonable prices from Calais Estate downstairs and the wine list is not OTT. Service was excellent and it was busy. We will definitely be back. Thanks and congratulations to Jadon the Chef and Millie!More

We recently enjoyed an excellent 3 course meal here prepared and presented to fine dining standard. Another great find as locals and looking forward to returning with travelling friends. Outlook would make this a be a very nice lunch venue also.

We waited half an hour just to get a menu. We needed to ask. We were told that they didn’t print enough for everyone and there were 2 table groups ahead of us. After finally getting a menu we waited a further half hour to...have our order taken. No offer of ordering a drink or explanation. We booked for midday on Thursday in the hope of good service. We had a hectic trip already with the M1 closed and finding detours. We managed to get some bread and a small glass of wine within 20 minutes of ordering. It was an hour and a half before our main arrived. The food was disappointing - pleasant enough but no promised bush flavours and quite bland. We had been to Kawul many times before in the old location - going back to days when it was Nanna Kerrs. We have always loved it and booked this adventure for a special occasion. So disappointing!More

I was in jeans and a T shirt and my wife in a dress. There was a formal wedding at the time and a group of young girls dressed up celebrating their HSC. So I would see a range but not work gear or scruff dress
