OUtstanding food, and amazing locaiotn, thew service was good, but teamn seemed rushed and potentially understaffed, but this happens and certianly didint effect our meal. Greeat chefs, just a little overpriced in my opinion, but wouyld certainly return.

Recent experience was of very lukewarm if not dour service, miniscule servings and a vastly inferior substituted main (almost blue raw shoe leather rump instead of the promised kangaroo). Certainly poor value for the $140 pp price tag just for food then extra for oysters...($5 each!) and cheese. Really can't see how they keep a Good Food hat anymore with so many much better quality and value choices in Newcastle and the Hunter Valley. Sad because subo had been our go-to restaurant for birthdays, etc., for the last >10 years. Certainly missing the great atmosphere and innovative dishes so enjoyed and created by former owners Chef Beau Vincent and his wife Suzie. Also sad that they still can't do a decent vegetarian option: merely swapping a frizzled carrot or slice of mushroom for the usual protein is blatantly inadequate. Vegetarians need protein too. Lentils, beans, tofu, tempeh, edamame, nuts, seeds, etc, etc all readily available but never used despite also charging $140 for the vegetarian option!!More

What an evening. The service right from the moment we walked in was friendly and welcoming. The food was perfectly matched with stellar wines. We had the autumn menu which was delicious. Just the right amount of food. We will be back!

On this dining occasion, we felt Subo lived up to the hype and would recommend you go. The service, ambiance and venue were lovely. The drinks list/selections were good and has something for every taste. In regards to the food, we were for most part...very impressed. The high was the dessert- one of the best desserts I've ever eaten and would go back for it again and again. Liquorice and raspberries - what an exquisite combination and the popping balls of raspberry caviar, chewy and crunch from the pistachio sponge- this dessert delivers next level! The other dishes were all very high quality. Subo push boundaries with flavour combinations and intensities; and I found it an exciting menu. The only minor critiques would be personal preferences- the butter accompanying the bread was too salty, the cheese filling in the ravioli was too intense for my liking, and I didn’t care for ‘the potato chip’ entree snack. Everything else was exceptional and I found the price fine for the delivery of such a wonderful night out. I would come back again- and would order a second dessert!More

Such an amazing experience. Subo has a set menu that changes periodically and we’ve been wanting to come here for ages. Service was great, six incredible, flavourful and beautiful looking dishes, great cocktails and a lovely ambiance. I couldn’t pick a favourite, each dish was...so meticulously presented and almost too pretty to eat! We’re so lucky to have this place in our city.More

I had a four person booking for Subo with family for a special celebration. We had to cancel the day of our booking because two people in our party were close contacts of people with covid. Subo charged us $500 for the cancellation and refused...to refund even after we said our reason was to avoid spreading covid. Apparently they would rather risk the health of their staff and patrons than appreciate our decision to be safe and do the right thing. Not having that $500 has significantly impacted out holiday. We were planning to use a voucher to pay for our dinner. We were really looking forward to visiting and now are just incredibly sad and disappointed.More

My husband and I celebrated my birthday at Subo last Thursday 9/12/21. Unfortunately, we left after the third course. To say we were disappointed was an understatement. The sashimi snapper was overwhelmingly dressed in a ponzu concoction. The local squid must have been hard to...catch because I don't think there was any in that so called course. And the pork cheek broke the camel's back - More like a roll of fat dip in egg, rolled in crumbs and plonked in the middle of the plate. We complained at the restaurant and were told politely that they would inform the Chef but would like us to pay the bill. The cost for three courses and accompanying wines, a beer and three oysters - $365 Totally disgusted and would not recommend this restaurant to anyone. Actually had a late snack at the Happy Wombat cafe just near Subo after the debacle. Would recommend it over Subo hands down.More
