Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

There was no parking, the service was slow and my battered NZ hoki was burnt and disgusting, I nearly threw up. Husbands morney bug was okay but not fantastic.

We only get away one weekend a year and we decide to travel 4 hours for a seafood platter at Kingfish for a special family get together. Fabulous food and friendly service.

The first time I went there was at night. The food and cocktails were amazing I shared the mixed platter with a friend Service was ok - could have been a lot better and some music would have been nice The second time was a...Sunday lunch and it was so disappointing I had the platter again, the fresh seafood had been frozen and was tasteless and the service was absolutely terrible I’ll probably give it one more go because I adore seafood by the water but it’s a lot of money to spend if the food and service isn’t goodMore

Service very average. Ordered one of the 'large' seafood platters. The food was the worst I have had in a long, long time. "Home made" fries, barely cooked through, soggy and served almost cold. Platter was supposed to include two Bugs, but only got one...and a half and these had been frozen and defrosting must have sucked all the flavor an texture out of them. Prawns had obviously been frozen to and force defrosted when we had ordered. Imported and previously frozen hoki from New Zealand... a real basis 'fish & chip' shop fish. Oysters were fresh and tasty. Scallops in half shell ok. We had a glass of white wine, small bottle of beer and all up with the platter the cost was $212. Will not be going again and recommend others don't waste their money there.More

Easily the worst dining experience I've had in a long time: 1. Had to chase service to get pre-dinner drinks. 2. The Green Apple martini was nice, and well presented. (It's all downhill from here). 3. Had to chase a waiter to order food. 4....The waiter who took our order planted himself with a laptop at the corner of our eight seat table and didn't move. Our guests had to shout our orders to him. He finally got the message and moved to where he could hear the orders. 5. Six meals were served in reasonable time, but two arrived after the earlier meals had been nearly finished. 6. The waiter delivering the meals leant over guests and handed out meals across guests. (some on chipped plates) 7. The oysters kilpatrick were completely smothered in a sickly sweet mixture that completely hid the oysters. They may as well have not been there. All you could taste was bacon. 8. The Hoki and salmon dishes were waaaay overcooked. The Hoki was just watery mush and the salmon chalky. Both were unpalatable and left uneaten. The barramundi and flathead were OK without being a standout. 9. The chips were an abomination - limp, greasy and looked like the scrapings. After picking out a few edible-looking chips they were left uneaten. 10. The green 'salsa' was inconsistent. For some guests it was bright green and others brown. It was bitter and a poor match for the fish. 11. After the pre-dinner drinks the waiters vanished and were not seen again until they collected the mains plates. So entree plates were left on the table while the mains were eaten, 12. No service meant no drinks with the main meal and no top-up of water. A big faux pas for a business looking to make money. At this stage we'd given up on dinner and wanted to get out. Trying get the waiters attention was fruitless, so we gave up trying. Our waiter just stood leaning on the bar chatting to the young lady mixing the drinks. 13. Some effort was made to ask guests about their meals. But some who had clearly not eaten their meals were not asked. 14. When collecting the plates the waiter again stood in one spot and reached over other guests to collect them. 15. At least we were able to split the bill and this went smoothly. This place gave the impression of a very ordinary fish and chip shop masquerading as a restaurant. We were there for a birthday celebration and were so embarrassed for the guest of honour. Definitely one to avoid.More

We were seeking a nice restaurant to take friends from interstate to lunch . Our favourite Lake Macquarie restaurant was booked out . We read the reviews prior to booking at Kingfish and checked out the menu and thought it sounded great . Unfortunately the...meals were not nice at all. The presentation was lacking , the seafood was over cooked , there was no taste to the lobster Mornay and as for the calamari and chips -I could of got better at the local fish and chip shop. Very disappointing , and certainly overpriced for the end result . We definitely will not be returning ! 🥲More

The Kingfish has been on our places to try list for sometime however we left completely disappointed. The staff were uninterested, menus were dirty, drink service was slow, food was over salted and lacking in flavor and some components of our seafood platter were over...just over cooked. I would also question the hygiene after witnessing one staff member use the broom she was using on the floor to sweep a table. Certainly not worth your money and we won’t be returning.More

Best gluten free battered fish and chips ever! We went with friends on a cold winters night. Every ones meal was good. It is very unusual to see battered gluten free fish on the menu so I decided to try it. Nice and crispy and...hot, with a very light batter and gf chips. Definitely a winner. I would have liked a little bit of salad or garnish on the side. Otherwise, delicious. We will be back in the summer to enjoy the lovely location as well.More

We really enjoyed the fish and chips here. Tried 3 kinds of fish. I. believe the Barramundi is slightly the better one. Service was good, the waitress was alone and she tried her best to juggle the 4-5 tables that came in at around the...same time. The restaurant is by the harbour area, nice spot for people watching and had a little breeze.More

I had such high hopes for our meal here. I loved reading that it is family owned and seemed more local’ish. We all agreed it was terrible, or as one said totally forgettable. My fish was inedible. I couldn’t even eat the quinoa salad, which...was tasteless. The fish on the seafood platter was tough and smelly, sign it wasn’t fresh. To make it worse, the service was terrible. Took our order, brought our food, and that was it. Never bothered to check back in to see how we were doing. It was a cold, stormy night so the restaurant was empty.More

This was our last night in Newcastle before making tracks back to the UK and I’m so pleased that my son chose this place. We’d booked a table for 6.30pm on a Tuesday night and it was very quiet when we arrived. We’d already looked...at the menu on line and decided on two Midweek Seafood Platters at $69 each and two bottles of Shiraz at $25 each (for four of us). The food came promptly, it was plentiful, tasty and the wine was very good for the price. But the very best bit was the lovely lady that served us with the wine and allowed us to try the ice cream flavours. She was wonderful, almost as good as the Turkish delight flavoured ice cream! Can’t wait to go back when we return in December.More
