You can't really escape the view - which is great, it is simply stunning. Had lunch there and the menu prices were on par with what you would usually pay for lunch in most cafe/restaurants in Australia. We had a few travellers who were coming later, so we preordered for them at a set time and the meals all arrived at the correct time and were all correct.

We had a seafood platter for two together with steamed vegetables for not so heavy dinner. Enough quantity of seafood platter came on a 3 level serving dish. Really enjoyed the platter and the steamed vegetables was especially excellent. Staff were very attentive and courteous. View of the Newcastle beach and the ocean was simply beautiful. Strongly recommend for sensible dinner seeking couples or others.

We shared a delicious seafood platter for two here at lunch and relaxed enjoying the beautiful view overlooking Newcastle Beach. The service was friendly and very helpful and the atmosphere was relaxed and comfortable. Great value for money

After reading glowing reviews, my family thought that we would give Jonah's a try for Christmas lunch in 2019 but, on the whole, we were very disappointed. First the good.. the view is fantastic and the staff were very nice. Now the bad... we paid about $150 per head. I'd put the food and drink value of what we got at about $60 per head (those would be retail values) and that's is being very generous for what we got. The entree was an uninspiring few pieces of seafood and the main was what you would expect from and RSL.. and I have had much better from many RSLs for about $20. Several of our diners only picked at the main as it was pretty unappetising. The dessert was the best dish by far but again nothing special. Seriously, if you are going to charge exorbitant prices (even bearing in mind that they need to pay Christmas Day penalty rates) then dish up half-decent food. Santa was lovely though. You can do much better elsewhere.. I'd hope.

After reading reviews online I thought that jonahs on the beach would’ve been a perfect restaurant to take my partner. The food was perfect. But the customer service from the waiter at the time was horrible which ruined the whole experience. As a young couple we felt as though we where treated differently compared to the older patrons in the restaurant. The waiter was rude, abrupt and was acting in a passive aggressive manner. We watched as he waitered older couples and he was a delight towards them. But as soon as he came to waiter my partner and I and other younger people in the restaurant he was extremely rude. We felt as though we where discriminated against because of our age and felt like we didn’t belong in the restaurant. The waiter would complain when we took longer than usual to order, slam our drinks onto the table, we could hear him slamming ice into the cups across the restaurant that where meant for us. He would roll his eyes and not help with menu choices (walk away while saying “it’s there on the menu”). Due to this experience we will not be going back to Jonas on the beach, we felt uncomfortable, degraded and heavily judged. Our night was completely ruined and wasn’t worth the effort, time and money that we put into the night. Although, this experience was ruined by one of the waiters. There was another waiter that was extremely kind and we where hoping he’d waiter us but to our disappointment we got the rude waiter. I Definitely won’t be coming back to jonas on the beach, maybe a pub next time where we might “belong”.

Before I post this review, I want to say that I did have the courtesy to write to the restaurant with my concerns, but they have gone without any response. We have been to Jonah's and dined on quite a few occasions and have always walked away having enjoyed the food, service and atmosphere immensely. We chose to go to Jonah's to celebrate a special birthday in our family. Previous experiences were that we walked away having had beautiful meals and an equally beautiful experience. On this occasion it was far from this. The service was terrible and far anything we have previously experienced. We dined on a weeknight and while we did take into account changes that may have been made to cope with the COVID situation, we most certainly did not expect this. Some diners were walking into the restaurant in attire more suited to a pub or fast food restaurant leaving us feeling quite out of place that we were significantly dressed up as most people who go to Jonah's do. The service we received was not of the standard previously experienced, we not once were offered a top up or choice of water or offered any drinks from the bar. If we wanted a drink we would need to wave someone down and then wait for it to eventually be brought to us. Items from the menu we ordered were completely missed and one item was brought to the table at a really odd time. There was no attention to any detail with the setting of the tables; cutlery in paper napkins and sachets of pepper with nothing else on the table may be a sign of the times but was really scrappy. The lighting was dull and absolutely no atmosphere was happening at all. We were not offered dessert and when we did ask for dessert (after having previously ordered a dessert plate (a combination of desserts) we were told No we won't do that) Disappointing because we have had this on a number of occasions before and it was never any problem. Our meals were nice but not overly hot enough and by the time we received them we were so disappointed with the evening we just wanted to leave. We are understanding that dinning out is new territory with navigating the new restrictions and adapting to new models for service is difficult, but to have this experience from Jonahs was beyond disappointing. Whilst we do not mind paying for a lovely dining experience, we really didn't want to part with our money on this night. If we were to have time over again, we would go somewhere else where we would not have any expectations. A night that was meant to be special was certainly ruined by our experience, not really sure if we would even bother giving you another go.

We have eaten at Jonah's several times over the years, usually special occasions and the food was always classic and beautifully cooked, and the service excellent. We went for lunch - we waited ages for drinks, they brought the wrong wine, the wrong glass for the champagne and no glass at all for the beer. The oysters hadn't arrived from Sydney in time for lunch, the salmon was really overcooked and dry and came with a piece of broccolini and 2 potato chips ($38), the (supposed-to-be medium to rare) beef was way overcooked, tough to cut and very few vegetables ($38) and the sauces for both were tasteless . We didnt risk staying for dessert or coffee. It was so disappointing as the view is spectacular. I dont even mind that the restaurant is dated and worn and could do with renovating, the view makes up for that. We wont be back until until some changes are made.

Attempted to book dinner for 6pm and was told they had absolutely no availability until 8pm. We arrived 7.45pm to find dozens of empty tables with there only being 4 tables seated. Were not advised when we made the booking they were hosting a wedding reception and therefore had no staff to serve in the restaurant and that was the sole reason they refused to seat us prior to 8pm. Ordered the cold seafood platter...dry lobster, mussels with beards still on, soggy fruit. Asked for some bread and the staff literally had no idea what we were asking for, eventually received some toasted sourdough. Staff basically had no idea what was on the menu! Horrible ambience - no music, lights on everywhere (not sure why they then had tea lights) - very much a 'club' atmosphere rather than a restaurant. Evening further ruined by the 6 screaming children whose parents thought it was acceptable to let them run completely riot (literally doing cartwheels through the dining area) - not only ruining our dinner experience but also that of another couple who were celebrating their 56th wedding anniversary! And to top it all off, there was no toilet paper in any of the ladies toilets and staff actually laughed at us when we advised them of this. I came for dinner as had been tasked by my manager in Melbourne to find somewhere in Newcastle where he could take his mates after their golfing day...Jonah's came highly recommended. Needless to say I will not be recommending it to him or to anyone else for that matter. Overall a completely underwhelming experience with staff who clearly do not care for either their jobs or their patrons.

Looking forward to an anniversary lunch. We had been there many times before. Barramundi was overcooked and tough. Too few vegetables. Beef fillet also overcooked and was accompanied by sliced (tinned?) beetroot and some garnish. Disappointing meals. Good friendly staff. Nice wines. Thank goodness the chips were nicely done and the view fantastic!!

What an unbearable special occasion we experienced tonight! The waiter had zero interest in nuanced service. It was either on the menu or not, a request for fresh bread was met with total confusion and which was proven accurate when 20 minutes later bread with condiments arrived to accompany a seafood platter already served. Small children were allowed to totally run wild; yelling and screaming all over the entire restaurant, when mentioned to a waiter this was met with laughter, mockery, assumptions about our attitude to children and total gaslighting about our experience. To top it off, after paying about $50 for a main and $110 for a seafood platter, there was zero toilet paper in the toilets. This feedback was also met with laughter by staff. I actually would not have bothered writing this review because our feedback was met with total indifference except for the couple we met outside who had their 56 Year Wedding Anniversary totally ruined by this party. The wife was particularly distressed and this was terrible to witness.

Our small group used to frequent this restaurant often because we always experienced excellent service, and were served reliably good food. We have not been for a couple of years though, since our last disappointing visit. For lunch on Friday we arrived a little early and were left to wait in the bar area for approx. 20 minutes while the restaurant was vacuumed and tables arranged and set. So sad to see the restaurant look tired and old, no tablecloths, smudges on all cutlery (my knife had food on it and when I asked for it to be replaced the waitress was quite huffy and disapproving of me), no coasters for glasses that created puddles, we had to ask for cocktail napkins. Our waiter was polite but clearly inexperienced. When he came to take our orders, he didn't know what the fish of the day was, and we were, by then, feeling we'd have had a better experience at the local pub. The quality of the food was poor, everything was either cold or barely warm, and the duck was dry. Desert was the greatest disappointment.....tarte tatin is a favourite but this deconstructed interpretation of the classic desert was a total disaster. A blob of what tasted and looked like tinned apples perched on a smear of crumbs does not come close to what we were expecting. The service was almost adequate but not even close to the excellent standard this restaurant used to provide under the supervision of Phillip Carnell. His eye to detail and engaging manner made every visit a special occasion. We won't be returning.

Four of us went for lunch. Veal medallions haphazardly cooked. Dry and underwhelming. My scallops were crucified to rubber and tiny as well. Completely wrong description with six miniscule cubes of potato under them. My friend 's mussels were in a wine sauce that was so salty as to be inedible without loads of bread. Service was slow and clunky. Three different waitresses asked us if we wanted sparkling or still water when we'd already ordered. All waitresses wearing filthy pants. You say thanks to the waitress for anything and her reply is "That's ok". Bizarre. The only two good things...the view and the space between tables.

Always had a very good reputation so I was a little disappointed. Oyster kirkpatrick were drowned in the Worcester sauce such that that was all we could taste even though the oysters were a good size. Breakfast toast had hardly been shown the toaster, Broccolini wasn’t bright green and tasty. However the rest of the food -eg poached eggs were delicious as was the fresh market fish. Service was excellent. Admittedly this visit was in the COVID era. The restaurant has to be complimented on its adherence to the rules, which together with lack of visitors must have had a terrific impact on their business

Our first dinner out in three months, due to Covid lockdown, for my birthday was worth waiting for. Delicious food, must recommend seafood chowder and beef fillet. Fabulous views even at night, friendly staff and all precautions taken to make dining as pleasant as can be with restrictions still in place. One of the best venues in Newcastle, always fabulous.

I came here for a Monday lunch with my partner and it was so nice. It was cold and windy outside but cosy inside. We had a great window view. We ordered the antipasto and the dusted calamari. Just perfect with a glass of bubbles. This is a very casual venue with the most perfect beach view and a wide menu to suit everyone.
