We had a lovely meal here on 27/02/20. It was my son’s partner’s birthday. The meal was excellent and I would recommend the chef’s choice to anyone. One major issue. Our waiter was told we were celebrating a birthday and he promised a candle on the dessert. This didn’t happen... no big deal. He apologised and then delivered what he said was his favourite cocktail to the birthday girl. Nice gesture. However when my son went to pay the bill the cocktail which wouldn’t have been the choice of the birthday girl was charged for😤😤😤😤. My son only informed me of this later that night so I wasn’t able to make my feelings known to the waiter and the manager. A great meal spoilt by an underhand gesture....?would I eat again here.. yes. But I would make sure this story was told to the manager/owners Gordon Patterson

Hi Gordon, Thank you for your feedback. I want to massively apologize on our behalf for the miss-communication between your waiter and the Manager on this evening. We love to help celebrate our guests birthdays and this would have been an honest mistake that the cocktail was on your bill. Please email me at manager@publickitchen.co.nz so I can rectify this situation.

We make a bee line to visit Public each time we come and it’s as good or better than the last time. Delicious sharing plates that range from polenta fries, to pork belly skewers to rosemary chicken. My favorite is the lightly spicy crunchy fried chicken with hot sauce. Sit outside with a blanket on the wharf under the heaters with a $10 espresso martini and the fried chicken overlooking the lake and you’ll be back for more. Service is great and drinks reasonably priced

Anyone travelling with a 2 year old will understand the need to find the right restaurant. As I am such a foodie I wanted to enjoy good food and service in the right atmosphere for my family. As we walked past the window of the Public Kitchen & Bar we saw there was live music which was a chap singing, which made us start looking for a free table, then the waitress Lucy gave us a beautiful big smile and beckoned us in. She was at the door before us, whisking our push chair away and showing us to our table, she then made sure all our needs were taken care of! With a glass of water in hand and a chat with our little daughter, Lucy talked us through the menu. The atmosphere inside is warm, cosy and friendly. After a lovely Aperol Spritz cocktail to start our food arrived, the chickpea & kumara fritters and confit duck pancakes were a favourite of mine and my husband is still talking about the Venison Osso Bucco, simply delicious. Two other staff members waited on the table, a young man and a young Northern Irish waitress, both very polite and competent. We would highly recommend Public Kitchen & Bar as amazing service, delicious food, great atmosphere, nice views of the lake and the drinks are brilliant!

Expensive, poor quality, but worst of all your food arrives as separate dishes as and when the kitchen can be bothered to cook it. Here’s your chips, thanks, 15 mins later, here is your fish, and then a further 20 mins later, here is your veg. Unbelievable. This is the second time we have experienced this lazy approach of serving food in NZ during our visit, and it’s the worst thing about NZ. Busy and arrogant restaurants have clearly decided that to maximize profit they can get away with churning out the food as and when then like, as actually trying to serve a meal to a table at the same time, a tradition followed in the rest of the world, is just too much bother.

We were here in July and had a great time with excellent staff, service and food. Because of that we came back again in January but unfortunately it was nowhere near as good. The service was poor, after we ordered several other tables arrived and they all got meals well before us. Staff walked past and realised we were waiting but didn’t come over. After around an hour food finally arrived - food was good but not great and not the same standard as 6 months ago and definitely not worthy of the prices they charge. It is an amazing location right on the lake at Steamer Wharf and its a great menu, but when we visited it was mostly empty so I guess locals are voting with their feet. Lots more better places in Queenstown that Public Kitchen.

I came in for lunch after having a lovely whitebait fritter a few weeks back . I had seen a neighbouring diner get a lightly battered tempura fish dish with coleslaw that looked delicious so I ordered it. I didn’t get the same dish . Somehow the chips were undercooked (the lovely waiting staff took them back and they came back cooked ) while the fish was over cooked in a thick crunchy greasy batter (not reminiscent of a light tempura at all) . It was a bit like fish they have at chippies in the Uk (usually precooked an battered) - simultaneously the batter was wet with grease while the fish was dry and overly firm (hard). Don’t order it unless you can be sure they are doing the lightly tempura battered fresh fish ...

Went in last night with a group of 3. Was very excited to order the chefs treat which is 65 dollars per person and the chef chooses your dishes. Absolutely disappointing. Basically the cheapest dishes on the menu ( mostly deep fried that you could get at fish n chip shop) and terrible tasting. The one meat dish was like bubblegum and none of us could eat it. The sad thing was we did see a couple of others at a table with food that looked much nicer. Don’t choose this. It’s clearly the restaurants way to make money by giving you the cheapest, easiest dishes , and charge you plenty. No better than what you might get on a snack menu for 20 bucks. Never go here again.

Hey, I'm really sorry to hear about your unsatisfactory experience at Public. We hold ourselves to a high standard of food here, and we feel terrible that we weren't able to meet that standard for you. Both the kitchen staff and our serving staff take pride in working together as a team and we are really passionate about the dishes we have chosen for our Trust The Chef, which is usually such a hit with guests. We obviously fell short on our standards the night you dined and we can only apologize. Please contact me directly on manager@publickitchen.co.nz so we can discuss more on how we would love to have you back to give you a better experience. Lucy

Visited lunchtime for a drink & me & my wife were impressed so returned later in the evening for dinner. Not disappointed even though we had a little wait for a table as very busy. This was not a problem as we had a seat at the bar & were well looked after by Mike the barman. Once seated we chose 4 dishes off the snack/light meal options & shared tapas style. Portions are generous so were well happy with this & it gives you the choice of trying different dishes. We had room to share the cheesecake dessert which was delicious. Great Setting on the steamer Wharf & if you time it right you can see the TSS Earnslaw steamship departing or docking right outside on Lake Wakatipu.

We were warned that the food comes out as the kitchen finishes it. But we didn't get our first sight of food for almost 45 minutes. As we were eating outside (because all the indoor tables were taken) it started to get chilly...so faster on the kitchen service would have made this visit better. The beef short rib was very nice as was the beef cheeks. The fried chicken came out ... and was very under seasoned and was more like chicken nuggets vs fried chicken. The salmon was a solid choice. Overall a good place to eat if you aren't starving or cold. Pass on the fried chicken and stick to the salmon.

We thoroughly enjoyed our evening meal at the Public Kitchen & Bar Queenstown. Ally was our waitress and was friendly and chatty and knew all about the food on the menu. Her description of what we ordered and her suggestion to share plates was spot on! We chose all vegetarian options and they were delicious! Highly reccommend the Public Kitchen & Bar when in Queenstown, just make sure you book to avoid disspointment.

We stopped in for dinner at the Public Kitchen with our two teenaged boys. The restaurant was busy, so we could only get a table in the courtyard. This doesn't have the views of the lake and seemed to be a bit of a backwater for the staff. Hence, the service was average. The boys were disappointed with their fish and chips - pricey blue eye cod (should normally be pretty good) pieces with overly crispy batter. The rolled pork loin was reasonably good, but all-in-all more misses than hits.

Our family of 5 dined her last night and had a great experience. Our Daughter has allergies to Egg, Dairy & Peanut and there were no issues at all. Paul our waiter was amazing. It was not an inconvenience for him to manage the allergies (as you can sometimes find in restaurants). Paul made sure he understood the issue, translated it to the kitchen staff BUT WHAT WAS AMAZING Public Kitchen & Bar had an easy to read printed out chart that showed every dish and what potential allergens were present. Great experience and by the way the food was really good! Excellent variety and some great flavours.

Public is right on the bay so the views are great and that alone drew is in. The food was quite good though a bit of a mixed bag with some great dishes (rack of lamb) and some less good (the overpriced duck). Service was good. Prices are high but no different than the rest of the restaurants in that area.

We visited Public on three occasions during our time in Queenstown in November 2019. The menu made our choices difficult but we were given further description and recommendations for dishes by Amy, Ally and Lucy, who looked after us so well during our visits. Dishes we tried, and loved, included cheese croquettes, lamb kofta, salmon, cod and chips, duck with pancakes, fresh pasta with lamb stew. We can also highly recommend the Ginger Bear drink. Presentation of food was great and we thoroughly enjoyed all that we ate - that's why we went back. The staff at Public were so friendly, helpful and welcoming and are an asset to the Restaurant. If you are in Queenstown don't hesitate to plan a visit, best time for us was just before the sun went down. You couldn't find a more perfect location at that time of day.

I came here with two friends after booking through first table. We ordered 6 different vegetarian meals to share and were completely full by the end of it. The location has an amazing view and the setup is well thought through, blankets and heaters were situated around the outside table to ensure comfort. The staff were super friendly and well informative of how the meals work, along the lines of the menu being designed to be shared and each meal will come out when its ready which works perfectly when you are sharing. Will definitely be back again and will recommend to friends and family.
