We arrived in Queenstown on a cold rainy end of afternoon and were dying for a nice substantial warm meal. As we didn't have much time to look around we googled highly rated places to eat and this place came up amongst the top few....What a disappointment! My husband and I are accustomed to eat/dine in many different places around NZ and internationally. This was one of our worst experiences ever. The menu is overpriced and totally disproportional to the size of the meals. My teenage boy left the place hungry and so did my husband. My son's baked potatoes weren't hot, more on the warm side and he found a long strand of hair battered and deep fried with his whitebait, that was absolutely disgusting and utterly unacceptable, specially considering the price of his meal. That's the most revolting sign of lack of hygiene in a kitchen's standards. His meal had to be returned and remade. I ordered my youngest's meal with baked potatoes and steamed vegetables and it was served with hot chips and salad instead, which had to be returned and brought out again with the correct order. The waitress who took our order checked that my salmon would be warm when added to my salad as I ordered it. Another disappointment, my salmon was stone cold and it hadn't been even warmed up in a microwave, let alone being freshly cooked as promised. The staff was expressionless, lukewarm, unfriendly, not a single smile on anyone's face at all times. This is a place in our black list, we'll make sure to NEVER go back there. We felt unwelcome the entire time and couldn't leave the place quickly enough.More

Hi Ma Are you sure you were at Captains?? We don't serve baked potatoes so would not have accepted that order. Also if we were to heat the salmon in your salad ( which is usually served cool) it would never be done in the...More

Great place to take your friends and family if you like the busy courtyard vibes. The food is great! We had the chefs special surf and turf. Delicious, however I felt the lobster was a little over cooked. It did not ruin the taste though....A little bit on the pricey side but worth the visit!More

We joined friends for an evening dinner at this seafood specialist restaurant. I decided to have two entrees instead of a main meal - the portions were very big and one entree would have been sufficient almost. The scallops were served on a delicious salad...and then the green-lipped mussels in a white wine sauce arrived in a big bowl - 9 in total, which is the most generous serving I've ever seen for an entree. Both dishes did not disappoint I hasten to add. others at our table chose the: fish of the day (monkfish) served on Israeli couscous the best meal ever I heard, mushroom risotto and the calamari as an entree (generous portions) and seafood chowder main meal serving also delicious. Everyone was raving over their meals. Friendly service and not a long wait for our meals but we didn't ever feel rushed either. We finished with Affogato for dessert - a memorable evening due to the great dishes we ate!More

Stumbled across this wonderful seafaring themed bar. Not a huge selection of ales on tap however a good range of bottled beer. We returned a week later for an ale and to soak up more of the atmosphere.

Great breakfast. Food was tasty. English friend raved over having HP sauce. I had the big breakfast which was plenty. Only criticism was at 8.57 being told we don't open till 9. But apart from that great value tasty meal.

Seafood chowder was disapointing was more like seafood surprise, surprised to find sea food in it, lacked flavor and taste. The crayfish was very small but was nice with salad and fries . My partner had the ribs and they were great. Service great, staff...great, a nice place for DinnerMore

Looked forward to as stated on menu their famous seafood chowder. It came out looking brown. First taste all I got was a mouthful of acid taste. I thought it was vinegar my partner said lemon juice as he had the same taste experience of...acid. Unfortunately that was it no seafood flavour just this overwhelming acid taste throughout the bowl.which we did not finish. As for the seafood ha the only seafood was mussels. Minced up mussels hence the soup been a brown colour., No fish, no shrimp which is surprising as they have those dishes on their menu. The seafood chowder is famous but not because it is great but the worst we have ever had. The chef needs lessons on what is a seafood chowder. Maybe a recipe from google could be a start for him/her.More
